With Saskatchewan starting to churn out indie rock darlings, Manitoba has become a bit of a forgotten province when it comes to music. Manitoba Music aims to turn that tide. They have a showcase of Manitoba artists set to play The Supermarket in Toronto on November 20th. The line-up includes singer/songwriter J.P. Hoe , indie rockers Cannon Bros , soul pop outfit Chic Gamine , with R&B songstress Flo headlining. Doors open at 8:00pm and cover is $5.

Firecracker/Cloudglow by Cannon Bros This album was, to my ears, a blend of the folk-y indie sound that, as a genre, seems to dominate the Polaris list year after year but mixed with power pop (by way of oddly, New Order maybe??) which, by Polaris standards, actually rates as making this progressive, relatively speaking. As you can probably guess if you've been reading my reviews, just by dint of being a decent but not exceptional execution of that sound, this didn't rate high in contention for me when I was figuring out my short [...]
Filed under: News , Awards , Music Appreciation Upper Class | A&C | Secret City The fight to determine the best Canadian album of 2012 based on artistic merit has officially begun. With most of the Canadian music industry setting their sights on Toronto's NXNE , organizers of the now seventh annual Polaris Music Prize instead announced its 40 Long List nominees today at the Waldorf Hotel in Vancouver, BC. And [...]

Hey there! You should read this original post on the hill by going here: Polaris Possibilities for 2012:: Part 2 Polaris Harder As we get close to June, it means that I've got to start eliminating the pretenders from the contenders for the 2012 Polaris Prize . There are countless records that deserve to be on my ballot and won't get included, and like any subjective vote, there will be adoration showered on records I can't stand. So be it. I try to keep an active list of my "favorite records" but [...]
Let's talk about Cannon Bros. I like talking about Cannon Bros. They're my new favorite thing, shiny and happy-making, and they're on my mind (and my stereo) a lot. I have some friends who dig them too, and sometimes we sit around and say things like, "Man, Cannon Bros, they're so good!" "I know, right?" "SO. [...]

by nashawa Cannon Bros sound like a more commercially viable version of Lemuria (I feel sexist for saying that; I'm aware not all bands with female vocalists sound like each other though). "Left in a Hurry" is a fantastically catchy indie pop track that relies on the melody to carry the song instead of lush layers and (unnecessary?) atmosphere, which is so otherwise omnipresent in this style. Maybe that's why it reminds me of Lemuria. Hah! See? No sexism here, boyo! This is a really fun track [...]

I'm often tempted to think my generation missed out on adventure. My parents, two of the most sedimentary souls anyone will ever met, spent their honeymoon driving from Halifax to Vancouver, down the coast to California - amazingly enough, they got stopped by cops only one block from where Bobby Kennedy was killed to ensure they weren't involved - and back across the US seeing the world before the natural beauty was overrun by sprawl and technology. Right now, we exist in digital interactions, happily adopting each new technology that pushes us further and further away from [...]

Weird Canada may have blogged about them first , but I'd already heard about them and thought they were really cool. Winnipeg's Cannon Bros make noisey mid-fi classic Canadian indie - if you're Canadian and know anything about indie rock, you know the sound I'm talking about. That great, homey, snowey Sloan / Weakerthans / Wooden Stars -kind of sound. Anyhow, they'll be coming to Toronto sometime soon, we might get to do a show with them Cannon Bros - Soft View [...]

by teepoo Here's some power pop from Winnipeg! The Cannon Bros EP is a free grab from Bandcamp so it's inexcusable not get it. Kicking it off is Out of Here with rebellious female vocals. The whole EP itself has male vocals in it though, so it's not a thorough representation of the entire set. But oh how it makes me wish I was a teenager again. Cannon Bros- Out of Here

Cannon Bros. - Out Of Here

"It's cold, bring a sweatshirt." Alex wore a rain coat, he always wore a rain coat, just in case. Grabbed the We Buy Gold! one, pink with gold lettering, and a stack of bars on the back. Out the window and onto wet lawn at night. Sprinklers have stopped it must be after 1. Schoolwork takes the ghost of my mother's face, it must be September again. But fuck this year, this year can suck a dick, I'm done caring. At the tracks, the branches let go around the rails, beat away by the [...]
