As someone who is a frequent visitor to the Amazon website, I have naturally enough been inundated with offers for their free cloud service. Up until now I've pretty much ignored them, but since I have been thinking about the new Kindle Fire I decided it was time to try Amazon's cloud. After all, one of the selling points of the new tablet is its ability to work so closely with the cloud. Of course, cloud computing in various forms has been pretty wide-spread for quite a while now. Those who have [...]

Cannonball Adderley was not only a popular jazz musician, he was also a populist in that he spoke to and about the working people of the black community. He was eloquent, often witty and able to engender a feeling of unity among his audiences. Although he was definitely a "race man" in that he championed the causes and culture of black people, he was not a racial essentialist, hence some of Cannonball's most popular and most enduring soul selections (for example "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and "Country Preacher" ) were written by and featured on piano the Viennese [...]

Herbie Hancock, revolutionizing jazz two times over on these, once on 19652s renowned Maiden Voyage , and again in 1973 on the perhaps even more legendary Head Hunters , respectively: And, as a bonus, check out some fusion-era Cannonball Adderley kickin' out his tribute to Herbie, from 19722s The Black Messiah : Cannonball Adderley: Dr. Honouris Cousa Filed under: [...]
Joyful 1961 sessions of jazz legends Adderley and Evans This 1961 session, pairing saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and pianist Bill Evans has several interesting dimensions. Adderley and Evans, having played together as part of the 1958 Miles Davis Sextet, were familiar with one another, but initially only as sidemen. Evans had supported Adderley in a quintet setting, on 1958's Portrait of Cannonball , and here they play in a quartet setting with the Modern Jazz Quartet's Percy Heath on bass and Connie Kay on drums. Without a second horn in [...]
A classic from 1961, reissued with alternate takes: sensitive piano, ripe alto sax and more. The opening strains of this classic Riverside album are pure-pure delicacy that could only come from the fingers of Bill Evans. His chiming piano, playing the original "Waltz for Debby", is something that brings to mind a particular kind of jazz-intimate, sweet, contemplative. Then, 1:07 in, Percy Heath's bass burbles downward and Connie Kay's brushes start working against a snare-and the ripe sound of Cannonball Adderley's alto sax just pops into the tune. Yummmmm. This...
Two dusted-off gems are reviewed: one from the Bill Evans Trio, the other from Cannonball Adderley.

There are two Nancy Wilsons in the world of music and probably quite a few more than two in the actual world. I became aware of this conundrum when my Facebook profile decided to link my liking of Nancy Wilson to the picture of the Nancy Wilson from the band Heart. It's not the right [...]

Let's take a break from the normal rhythm of dubstep posts with the smooth, relaxing sounds of jazz. Who could argue with that? Featured here are songs from a smattering of my favorite jazz artists, old and new. Enjoy! - @Crimestein PS. I'm looking for suggestions for what to name a new series that I'll be writing on filthstep + drumstep. The only catch is the name has to be dairy- or milk-related. Please pitch in if you've got any clever ideas. *The new series will be distinct from Wobble Wednesday, which will remain [...]

Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley : A Sleepin' Bee [ purchase ] Hey, did you know that Truman Capote wrote a musical? It's true. It was called House of Flowers. The music was by Harold Arlen. The show debuted in December of 1954, with Pearl Bailey as the established star, and Diahann Carroll the up and coming star in the cast. Even with all that talent involved though, the show was a flop. So why even mention it? The reason is that the songs survived and thrived. In particular, [...]

Words have the power to destroy or heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world. - Jack Kornfield A couple of the more notorious vocal samples in my mind, and if not yours, then enjoy for the well made sounds. Use your voice. Light a fire. Throwback : Cannonball Adderley - Walk Tall (don lowed) -- Throwback : Dave & Ansil Collins - Double Barrel (don lowed) --

Cannonball Adderely : Mercy Mercy Mercy [ purchase ] Joe Zawinul started his recording career as a bandleader in 1959, but he was soon working as a sideman. By 1966, Zawinul had been with Cannonball Adderley for five years. That was when he wrote Mercy Mercy Mercy. This was the rare jazz song to hit the pop charts, peaking at #11. Zawinul was a pioneer in the use of electronic keyboards in jazz; in this case, it is the electric piano. The song became a jazz standard. [...]

Lo and behold, the iPod shuffle has chosen once more. In this again rather diverse edition of Wild Weekend we pay visits to Alabama, Düsseldorf and Whiskey Boot Hill, and see how three charming English ladies get their groceries. And that´s not all, folks. "Do a runner! Do a runner!" Or: my fave all-girl combo the Slits goes shopping the proletarian way, with a great postpunk reggae riddim on the side. "Babylon won´t lose much, and we´ll have dinner tonight". Meanwhile back in ´68, former Byrd Gene Clark teams up [...]

I totally forgot that yesterday was Father's Day in much of the Northern Hemisphere* until I saw PostSecret's " Father's Day Secrets ". And then I got all sappy and teary-eyed. As you do. Especially over these ones: That last one, in particular, got to me. I've noticed lately, particularly with Boy Z, this primal need for recognition from his Dad. We do swimming lessons on a Sunday morning. After the rush of pride over seeing him swim [...]
