Daily Diversion – Tijuana Hercules at Panchos

Daily Diversion – Tijuana Hercules at Panchos And now three reasons to forget it's a Monday and roll up to Panchos tonight... 1. Tijuana Hercules is the new project from John Forbes, whose Chicago band connections date back to '80s and early '90s. Not only is Forbes putting his own stamp on Hercules via the goofy cartoon squiggles scattered on the band's website and facebook, but his throaty, croaky vocals lead the way. And the music combines rumbling blues rock, kitschy lounge and quasi-gypsy flourishes for a sounds that's both festive and quirky. LISTEN: [...]

Richard Giraldi's Top 11 Chicago Records of 2011

Richard Giraldi's Top 11 Chicago Records of 2011 Seeing how our staff has distinct tastes and opinions on music, it would be nearly impossible for us to determine a 10 Albums of 2011 list as a single entity without excessive bloodshed. So over the next couple of days, we'll be posting Top 10 Albums of 2011 lists as determined by individual Loud Loop Press staff members. Today, associate editor Audrey Leon offers up her list for Top 10 Albums of 2011. I decided to do it a little differently this year. I honestly didn't think I could find another way to describe how great [...]

LISTEN: Hospital Garden – "Something Happened"

LISTEN: Hospital Garden – "Something Happened" Hospital Garden There's nothing more exciting than watching a band blossom throughout the years. With two full albums under their collective belts, the members of alt-rock trio Hospital Garden have fully grown into their sound. The group released a new four-song split EP with Americana rockers The Canoes last month. On the album, Hospital Garden's sole original track "Something Happened" exhibits some real bite. The new track is crunchier than Hospital Garden's past catalog. "Something Happened" booms and thunders with distressed solos [...]

Daily Diversion – The Laureates at Bottom Lounge

Daily Diversion – The Laureates at Bottom Lounge The Laureates Three Thank-Grimace-It's-Thursday reasons to head on down to Bottom Lounge tonight... 1. How about some endearing indie rock? If you like a little bit of jingle with your jangly guitars The Laureates more than deliver with its Spoon-like bluesy, toe-tapping rhythms and its Morrissey-esque vocal stylings. Our own editor-in-chief Richard Giraldi had some nice things to say about the group's sophomore record Spells back in June, describing the Laureate's sound as "rough-and-tumble garage rock with a power [...]

Daily Diversion – Seafarer at The Empty Bottle

Daily Diversion – Seafarer at The Empty Bottle seafarer Three I-hate-to-see-you-leave-but-I- love-to-watch-you-go reasons to skip on down to the Empty Bottle tonight... 1. I hate farewells; they're so final. But, alas, tonight we must say goodbye to Chicago quartet Seafarer . The group quickly became known for its endearing approach to indie rock with just enough folk not to be annoying and a decent blend of both crunch and melody that lands somewhere between angsty Pavement and country-fried Pavement. Seafarer, we hardly knew ye. [...]

CD of The Month: The Canoes

CD of The Month: The Canoes From the opening explosion of the debut album, Roger , from the Evanston band The Canoes on the track "We'll Meet in Minnesota" I knew I was hearing something special. The band has such a full sound, that borrows from some of the best bands of the early '90's like Cracker and Dinosaur Jr. It so refreshing to hear that straightforward fuzzed out roar of the guitar again, and that sound carries through out the album. Thematically the album deals heavily with what it means to live in the Midwest and [...]

The Canoes – Roger

The Canoes – Roger Perhaps The Canoes should have waited until winter to release their debut LP, Roger , because the record is brilliantly warm. The Chicago band's folky take on melodic garage rock slowly simmers but never boils over. Overdriven guitars seamlessly blend with breezy tempos for a laid back approach that's pleasantly intoxicating. Roger 's cover art pretty much sums it up as it connects three medals shaped like the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. The Canoes (Sam Durkes, Rory MacPhail, Alex [...]

The Glass Canoe – Happy

The Glass Canoe – Happy So remember a couple of weeks ago when we posted that awesome and kind of trippy video for " First Idea " from north county San Diego (the San Diego equivalent of clarifying that you're from upstate New York) band The Glass Canoe that felt a whole lot like a hot and sticky summer day? Well, they've released their first album Chimera which you can listen to in its entirety and download for free over on their bandcamp page right now. Or tomorrow, or any other time you want, ever. The Glass Canoe.

The Glass Canoe. I was literally quite blown away when I first heard the The Glass Canoe 's Broka, the first track from their debut album Chimera released back in March for free to download on their bandcamp page. I guess psychedelic pop is the most accurate label to describe the sound of this San Diego based five-piece, all though they seem to be influenced by many kinds genres with their atmospheric compositions, layered vocals, sudden breaks of noise and sometimes even leaning on the more ambient, minimalistic sound. Honestly though, you got to listen for yourself. [...]

Robert Pollard, Joe D'Amico, Royal Canoe, Is Tropical, Making Friendz

Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. The Glass Canoe Track

The Glass Canoe Track Here's another track from our favourite band named after a piece of impractical sporting equipment: The Glass Canoe. The song is called 'The Field' and it's a rather lovely piece of dark, atmospheric alt rock. Listen to it here: 'The Field'

Daily Diversion – The Canoes at Beat Kitchen

Daily Diversion – The Canoes at Beat Kitchen Three stop-using-that-dry-shampoo-an d-introduce-your hair-to-soap-and-water reasons to come out to Beat Kitchen tonight... 1. Any band that describes itself as "a cross between a hot dog and a Replacements melody" is A-OK in my book. And it's true, vocally, there's a hint of Replacements mixed with some moderately paced folk and maybe even some Pavement-esque quirk in The Canoes ' lyrics. The end result is pretty damn palatable. To celebrate The Canoes' new album Roger the Chicago quintet will hand out free copies to those in attendance. Don't [...]
