Mission Of Burma | Photo by Audrey Leon Howdy, Chicago! Tis the week before Lollapalooza and all through the house, not a creature was stirring except...oh... Wicker Park Fest ! Yeah, a pretty nice prelude to next week's big enchilada. Our own Audrey Leon breaks it down below. But that's not all that's going on in the windy city this weekend. Plenty more great shows like La Scala at the Empty Bottle , Light Pollution at the Hideout and much more! Let's get [...]

Chicago indie rock veteran and Cap'n Jazz memeber Victor Villarreal is releasing a split 73 with Dekalb, IL math-rockers Loose Lips Sink Ships titled Eating Happens (That there to the left is the cover). The split is scheduled for a an August 27 release on Whaleplane Records . While not rocking the Bottom Lounge or the upcoming Wicker Park Fest with the newly reunited Cap'n Jazz , Villarreal has focused on his acoustic folk songs such as "Prophesying Hypothesis", the track featured on Eating Happens [...]

Mission of Burma plays a headlining set at Subterranean tonight and then plays the Wicker Park fest Saturday night. Suprisingly, the '80s post-punk gods of Burma are merely opening for reunited emo rockers Cap'n Jazz at the Wicker Park thing. Possession - Mission of Burma Oh Messy Life - Cap'n Jazz
Fifteen years after the band's disbandment, Cap'n Jazz is back together. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

There's a very good interview of Cap'n Jazz front man Tim Kinsella by r ock critic Jessica Hopper up on Chicagoreader.com right now. We highly recommend it. Of course you know Cap'n Jazz reunited at the Bottom Lounge the same weekend as Pitchfork Festival. Some would say it was the best show of the weekend. If you were S-O-L when it came to getting tickets to the Bottom Lounge shows, fear not. Cap'n Jazz will be back in Chicago this weekend at Wicker Park fest . So to get you pumped for [...]

Illinois math rockers Loose Lips Sink Ships are releasing a split 7" entitled Eating Happens with Victor Villarreal (Joan of Arc, Cap'n Jazz, Ghosts & Vodka, Owls) on August 27th through Whaleplane Records. The split features Loose Lips Sink Ships' whimsically-titled A-side "Sarah Palin's Parasailing" b/w Victor Villarreal's beautiful acoustic gem "Prophesying Hypothesis". You can now pre-order it, and you better because it's going to be a limited pressing of 500 hand numbered copies -- that and it's awesome. The cover photo was taken by Randi Stella and Adam Minorczyk created the back cover collage seen here [...]

Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be. Cereal boxes have their 60s logos. NBA teams have “throwback” jerseys. And Sly Stallone’s The Expendables is a lesson in geriatric bloodshed. Music is hardly immune from this culture of yesteryear, with bands reuniting left and right. At first glance, Cap’n Jazz and their current summer reunion tour seem no different. When whispers of a Cap'n Jazz reunion began, the FC feared another one of those money grabs that aged musicians can't seem to resist. [...]
Before the rains came and the day devolved into a choose-your-own-adventure of sorts (where, on one hand, you could make a mad dash to the "backup venue" to see the remainder of the show and yet, on another, kick back inside the designated Jelly NYC roped-off All Saint's Pub VIP area for open bar until [...]
I'm back from Comic-Con in 98% one piece. Joints a bit achey, shoulders a bit sore, brain very muddled. Kicking around the internet I completely ignored for the last week, I'm both very happy and a little sad to find this bootleg from the recent Cap'n Jazz reunion show. The joyful part of me is happy to hear these guys playing again. I've kept up with some of the myriad of projects that Tim Kinsella has been involved with over the years, but Cap'n Jazz has a special place in my heart. The sad part [...]

Featuring Cap'n Jazz, Lightning Bolt, No Age, The Death Set, Ninjasonik, Bikes in the Kitchen and more!

No Cap'n Jazz. No No Age. No Lightning Bolt. I did catch a little bit of The Death Set though and they ruled. The show got moved from Williamsburg Waterfront to Brooklyn Bowl. This may sound familiar. Last summer the epic No Age/Dan Deacon/Deerhunter show was supposed to be at Williamsburg Waterfront but also got moved due to storm bullshit to Brooklyn Bowl. I was lucky (and patient) enough to catch the 2nd show of two that those bands played due to high demand. It was unreal. This time I didn't feel like reliving the grueling waiting process, unsure if [...]

After a slow week or so (besides Siren and the Gospels show last night), the end of July in NYC is gonna be nothing short of awesome. Too many good shows. Highlights are hard to come by since almost of these look like outstanding shows, but I'll pick the best of the best. I'm super excited to see the guys from Sirs play in none-other-than Shea Stadium on Thursday (7/22), where not too long ago lots of Ridgewood kids just played/watched the fantastic Chocolate Bobka showcase. On Friday there's the Free Energy/Best Coast/Loose Limbs FREE show at South Street Seaport [...]

As promised, the organizers of Fun Fun Fun Fest have leaked another round of bands to play the 2-day event this upcoming Nov. 6th & 7th . In addition to the first leak , which included Best Coast , Suicidal Tendencies , and Slick Rick, this time around Snapcase , Dirty Projectors , Yelle , Cap' N Jazz , and The Gories will be joining in on the fun (pun very intended). Sure, there was a pretty good lineup at Forecastle this year, but the reason I was so amped for the fest - since you could see pretty much any of the other acts at (insert festival name here) - was the opportunity to see the first full set from Cap'n Jazz in 15 years. And while Cap'n was great and it blew my mind to see a band that I had resigned myself to only ever knowing secondhand in general, the best part was experiencing it all with a small, [...]
Over the past four summers, New Yorkers have flocked to Brooklyn for some pretty stellar Sunday Pool Parties . And even though organizers JELLYNYC were forced to relocate the summer concert series from McCarren Park Pool - aka a real pool - to its current home at Brooklyn's East River State Park, thanks to acts like Grizzly Bear, Dan Deacon, Beach House, Girl Talk, and Grupo Fantasma, the Pool Parties continue to remain one of the borough's more popular summer attractions. (For context, attendance has grown from 6,000 per day at the McCarren Pool to more than 10,000 after [...]
The fifth season of Brooklyn's fabled Pool Parties, now held at East River State Park, starts next weekend, but organizers Jelly waited until now to announce the lineup.
