We really try to keep things hyperlocal to Chicago here on LoudLoopPress.com , but occasionally there are cool happenings two and a half hours south of our fair city. Champaign-Urbana's Pygmalion Music Festival returns for it's sixth year this September 22 - 25 and offers a pretty wicked lineup. Just a little more than a week ago, the festival announced the additions of indie stalwarts Built To Spill , punk elder statesman Ted Leo and the Pharmacists , indie power rockers Surfer Blood , Canadian psych outfit Holy Fuck [...]

>> [PHOTO CREDIT: Ryan Bach] You don't need us to tell you one of the biggest stories in the musical underground this summer is the Cap'n Jazz reunion shows. But it is worth reminding indie rock fans that the seminal second-wave emo band's exuberant and angular style of indie rock has been embraced by many contemporary disciples. One such act is Chicago/Indiana-based emo superlatives Grown Ups , whose new full length More Songs is the maiden U.S. release of the rock-solid, U.K.-based label Big Scary Monsters. More Songs , which Big Scary [...]

A documentary slash concert film about the recently reunited Chicago post-hardcore outfit Gauge , titled GAUGE:153 , is set to premiere on Friday, June 18, at the Cave . According to the GAUGE:153 Premiere Facebook page , the Matt Golin-directed film primarily deals with their 2010 reunion shows and features interviews members of Braid, Sidekick Kato and Cap'n Jazz - who Gauge will be opening for next month during their two Bottom Lounge reunion shows in Chicago. Even better is that the premiere is more [...]

Tankboy and the snarky headline writers over at the Chicagoist revealed the lineup to Chicago's Wicker Park Fest , which is set for Saturday, July 31, and Sunday, August 1, on Milwaukee Avenue between North Ave. and Wood St. The annual Wicker Park/Bucktown music fest boasts a solid lineup this year including everyone's favorite local hard rockin' duo Local H , Chicago neo-soul revivalists JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound , Canadian experimental rockers Holy Fuck , recently reunited Chicago emo-originators Cap'n Jazz, Canadian indie buzz band Plants and Animals [...]

I just finished up an interview with Davey von Bohlen for Ghettoblaster about the Cap'n Jazz reunion and vinyl reissue of Analphabetapolothology , but I thought it behooved me to increase the scope of our conversation, given that von Bohlen fronted another influential band and just signed a record deal with his current band. So here's what he had to say about the possibility of doing Promise Ring shows after saying "never" to an extended Cap'n Jazz reunion: No... [...]

On January 22 of this year, the Empty Bottle played host to a one-time gathering of folks who have performed with critically acclaimed Chicago act Joan of Arc over their 15-year life span. If you're up to snuff on Chicago rock history, you know that the Joan of Arc family tree includes Mike and Tim Kinsella. This led to a seemingly one-off Cap'n Jazz reunion. Fortunately for us, this one-off spawned the much anticipated Cap'n Jazz reunion shows that kick off at the Bottom Lounge in July. [...]

Dangerbird Records has just announced the signing of Maritime . Upon hearing this news, I got a little giddy. Signing a record deal usually means a new music is coming down the pipe - and sure enough, the Milwaukeeans (Milwaukeeites?) will release their Dangerbird debut later this year. No more specifics are available at the moment, but after waiting not so patiently since 2007 for a follow-up to Heresy and the Hotel Choir (one of my favorites that year), I can stand a little more suspense. Plus frontman [...]

Photo by Ben Geier If you have tickets to one or both of the Cap'n Jazz reunion shows at the Bottom Lounge on July 17 and 18, your day is about to get even better. Chicago post-hardcore machine Gauge will be opening for Cap'n Jazz on both nights and will be joining Cap'n for their Philly and D.C. dates as well. Gauge also recently reunited after a brief 16 year break for three shows in early March including a headlining show at the Bottom Lounge [...]
by chuck bell When Chicago legends Cap'n Jazz broke up in 1995, its members went on to form countless new projects, some of which still exist today. Of all of these offshoot bands, Ghosts & Vodka had one of the shortest lifespans. Initially, guitarist Sam Zurick stuck with Cap'n Jazz vocalist Tim Kinsella for his new experimental band, Joan of Arc. Victor Villareal began playing guitar in a band called Tetsuo. It was not until 1998 that all four members of Ghosts & Vodka met, at [...]

I initially wasn't too surprised by the 2010 lineup of Louisville's Forecastle Festival . You know, the usual summer festival fodder. The Flaming Lips . Spoon . Lucero . Ted Leo . Cap'n Jazz ... wait, huh wha?!?! That's right, we're getting one of three reunion shows Cap'n Jazz recently added to its itinerary. Huzzah! Cap'n Jazz - Oh, Messy Life

One of my all time favorite spazz-rock outfits of Chicago and Mike Kinsella [of Owen, American Football and Joan Of Arc] related projects, Cap’n Jazz, are reuniting as they release a reissue of their 1998 double LP, Analphabetapolothology. The reissue will be out June 29th courtesy of Jade Tree Records. The record will also feature a deluxe gatefold album jacket with plenty of bonus material including never before seen photos, show fliers, and liner notes by frontman, Tim Kinsella. Along with this reissue, the band has a few dates lined up. 07/09 – Louisville, KY @ [...]
As we mentioned last month, highly influential Chicago outfit Cap'n Jazz will reunite this July for two already sold-out performances in its hometown. It turns out there will be at least three other opportunities to check out the reunion from a live setting, as the band is now confirmed for an appearance at this year's Forecastle Festival in Louisville, Kentucky as well as a July 23rd performance in the Nation's Capital and a July 24th date in Philly. Futhermore, Cap'n Jazz will also use the summer to reissue its 1998 anthology, [...]

Do You Realize that the Flaming Lips are coming to Louisville this summer?? Will you have a "Ball" seeing Widespread Panic? Will you go "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" for Spoon? The answer is yes... because they are your initial Forecastle Festival 2010 headliners! Full listing of the initial lineup below... but look forward to 60+ more bands announced later. We, as always, will keep you posted. Flaming Lips Widespread Panic Drive-By Truckers Spoon Bassnectar Heavyweight Dub Champion Break Science Dar Williams Cap'n Jazz [...]
Following up on the awesomeness that is the inaugural lineup for the Hopscotch Music Festival, the Lousivlle, Kentucky based Forecastle Music Festival is another music-filled weekend to get excited about. For its ninth rendition, organizers have pieced together a bill that includes headliners The Flaming Lips, Widespread Panic, and Spoon, along with an impressive mid-tier featuring the likes of Bassnectar, Minus the Bear, Drive-By Truckers, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Break Science, The New Deal, EOTO, Lucero, Two Fresh, and the recently reunited Cap'n Jazz. l'homme sage qui sait ce que parler veut dire m'a justement dit aujourd'hui que je parlais bien souvent pour ne rien dire, que mes longues dithyrambes sur les artistes mis en lumière dans ces pages invitaient plutôt le lecteur/auditeur au silence qu'à l'écoute.

Emo heroes Cap'n Jazz got fans excited, reuniting for a set at the Empty Bottle last month. Following the vinyl re-release of the band's one album, Analphabetapolothology , in June, an official reunion tour will kick off at Bottom Lounge July 17. A second show was added for July 18. Oh Messy Life - Cap'n Jazz

Jade Tree is thrilled to announce that one of its most influential and popular titles, Cap'n Jazz 's seminal discography Analphabetapolothology , will be released on vinyl for the very first time on June 15th. A little over ten years have passed since the original CD release the label is proud to give the record the proper proper full featured vinyl issue that it deserves. As Cap'n Jazz has grown in popularity, so has the demand for the anthology on vinyl and they were more than happy to put together a package well [...]

According to Jade Tree Records that one-off special reunion of Chicago's own Cap'n Jazz in January has turned into a full-fledged reunion with a small tour starting at The Bottom Lounge on July 17. Before there was emo, there was Cap't Jazz. After Cap't Jazz? Tons of emo. The brothers Kinsella only released one full length as Cap't Jazz, and there's some news on that front as well. Jade Tree will be lovingly re-releasing the band's anthology, "Analphabetapolothology", on vinyl for the first time on June 15. The double album [...]
