Illustration by Carolyn Alexander Words by Oliver Primus It's safe to say that bands like the Grammatics are in a small group of UK bands that will be fighting it out to turn their 'tipped to be big in 20092 titles into actual success this year but we at The 405 feel they can do it and to celebrate their greatness, here's a little interview with the band in question. For all the newbies, could you explain a little bit about yourself? My name is Owen Brinley. [...]
>> Be Happy Records has reissued the debut "demo" 7" from Philly-based emo superlatives Algernon Cadwallader , and so we are finally initiating coverage of the act with an emphatic "buy" rating. A 2008 re-pressing of the release, originally issued in 2006, sold out briskly. The disc includes four tracks, "Second Rate Machines," "Breath Wish," "Look Down..." and "Sailor Set Sell." Those unfamiliar with the act(which in the excellent video clip above is a four-piece, but at its MySpace lists itself as a trio?) will be surprised to learn it sounds very convincingly like the fabled Kinsella-led second-wave emo [...]

Maybe I'm just getting old, but THE APPLESEED CAST 's latest output, Sagarmatha , features some of the most unintelligible vocals I've ever heard on record. This is not to say that I don't enjoy the said mouth-filled-with-marbles vocal stylings, but I think I prefer the off-key yelping of The End of the Ring Wars or the emo-tastic output that was Low Level Owl Vol. 1 & 2 (which, by the way, is an absolutely FANTASTIC 4 disc vinyl set... but I digress). Apparently, Sagarmatha was meant to be an entirely instrumental EP only [...]

Well I managed to throw up a bunch of tracks on the server this morning so I could put up a little Christmastime mix for all of you. Anyone that knows me knows that although I'm Jewish I'm a sucker for a Christmas tune. I wish everyone a safe and Happy Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, New Year and anything else that may fall over the next few days. I'm hoping to get one more post up before I skip town and maybe get a guest post or two up, if not I'll be [...]

sup, fools? in case you missed it, mr largeheartedboy is in the process of compiling what is already an exhaustive list of "best of's" from around the blogoweird. check it here. i'm gonna come right out and say it, west philly's algernon cadwallader's copping of tim kinsella and his cap n' jazz is almost embarrasing. even with that said, i really dig em. sure, the world only needs one tim kinsella, but maybe the world needs another cap' n jazz? considering their short life, me thinks a rejuvination of the cap'n jazz sound [...]
In between posting holiday songs I thought it might be a great idea to post some more holiday songs. I swear I'll get my top 50 of 2008 up sometime this week or next, but until then just drown yourself in Christmas cookies, candy canes, mistletoe, snowflakes, pine trees, and whatever else it is that gets you through this time of year. MP3 | Chris Garneau - It's Almost Christmas MP3 | Cap n' Jazz - [...]
This (these) post(s) is (are) actually an updated and much more comprehensive repost of this one and this one and should hopefully satiate everyone that's been asking for these to be reposted. It also serves as a reminder that way before what teens, tweens, and over-protective parents today think of as emo, the term was shorthand for emotional hardcore. It was not a dirty word that referred to the lifestyle that gets so much negative press these days. It did not mean faux-depression, eyeliner, bad haircuts, and just plain ridiculousness. [...]

Lo-fi, lo-musicianship, lo-suckage. Hi-awesome. Beat Happening - Christmas backup link "I had sex on Chrismas I had sex three times today Three different women taught be how to be bored in their own separate, sweet, little ways I feel like hell on Christmas And I feel like hell today I feel like Hell When I wake-up, I can tell that I'm never gonna make you stay Okay, here it goes [...]

Albums Revisited American Football was a short-lived band that originated in Urbana, Illinois and consisted of members Steve Lamos, Steve Holmes, and Mike Kinsella. The band was formed by Kinsella and Lamos after a previous project, The One Up Downstairs, called it quits. Other members of The One Up Downstairs went on to form Very Secretary, while Kinsella and Lamos recruited Steve Holmes and started American Football. The band only managed two releases for Polyvinyl Records: an EP in 1998 and a self-titled full-length [...]

By D'Aziz Kanye West - " Homecoming " ft Chris Martin. The last time Kanye dropped an album I initially claimed the only good song on it was the masterpiece "Gone." I later repented, even the track with the doucheopotamus from Maroon 5 was listenable - wack falsetto "hook" notwithstanding. This time around I'm ready to jump on the bandwagon. Indeed, I've already demonstrated my willingness to accept clown/genius juxtapositioning with my pimping of the Jay Z track "Beach Chair," produced by and featuring Chris Martin of Coldplay. Unfortunately, I'm [...]
Way before what teens today think of as emo, the term was shorthand for emotional hardcore. It was not a dirty word that referred to the lifestyle that gets so much negative press these days. Originating in the Washington, DC music scene of the mid-1980's, some so-called "first-wave" emo or emocore bands included Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Moss Icon. Then came Fugazi (featuring ex-members of Rites of Spring and Embrace), Jawbox, and so on from there... This is (according to me) a brief history of emo in music only. Yes, it will be incomplete in some [...]

(Jawbreaker at Gilman Street, sometime in the early '90s; photo from San Francisco Audio ) When did we start referring to old school rap as old school? I mean, back in the ?80s, ABC rhyming/boom bap/high-top fades/four-finger rings were on some next shit. Surely, nobody was referring to any of it as ?old school? back then. Reason I mention this is cause I?ve been listening to a lot of emo from the ?90s lately ( Jawbreaker , Sunny Day Real Estate , Texas is the Reason , etc.). [...]
Um, So I think my Three the Hard Way series fizzled out last week sometime when I was super busy at work.. SO I figured I would end it with my 6 top "Emo" songs.. like I said before, I don't really think any of these bands would consider themselves emo. And I don't know if they fit into the genre but it doesn't matter. here are my 6: Capn Jazz - Planet Shhh Boys Life - Fire Engine Red [...]
