Nú í gær, föstudaginn 17. desember, lést einn merkasti tónlistarmaður síðustu aldar, Don Van Vliet - betur þekktur undir nafninu Captain Beefheart , 69 ára að aldri. Þó að hann hafi dregið sig frá tónlistariðkun snemma á níunda áratugnum og aldrei náð sérstakri hylli almennings þá hefur Captain Beefheart haft ómæld áhrif - og þá sérstaklega á jaðartónlist undanfarinna áratuga. Frá árunum 1967-1982 gaf Captain Beefheart út 12 breiðskífur ásamt hjálparkokkum sínum í The Magic Band auk hljómplötunnar Bongo Fury sem hann gerði með æskuvini sínum Frank Zappa árið 1975. Á plötunum sínum blandaði [...]

Photography by me ! I'd like to tell you a little story... A semi-tragic love story, if you will, between myself & a little mobile phone service provider named Sprint . It's a long story, so how about we start up the tunes now, let you settle in, and snuggle up for a, hopefully, good read. Push play and let's begin our story as... TSURURADIO Presents... Safe as Milk is the debut album by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, originally released in 1967. It is a heavily blues-influenced work, but also hints at many of the features—such as surreal lyrics and odd time signatures—that would later become trademarks of Beefheart's music. The album is also notable for the involvement of a 20-year-old Ry Cooder, who plays guitar and wrote some of the arrangements. Amazon.co.uk "I may be hungry, but I sure ain't weird," Don Van Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart, famously intones on this bright-sounding re-mastered version of the 1967 [...]

I'd just like to start off by noting that today is Saint Andrews day, for those who are unaware. He is the patron Saint of Scotland....and Greece, Ukraine, Russia and Romania nonetheless. But seeing as i'm Scottish i had planned on making a special Scottish artists themed Monday List. But i promised a moustache review last week so i'm sticking with that theme and i'll get a Scottish artists post in before the end of the year, i'll make sure it's a big post too. That should more than make up for the delay in my promised Scottish themed post. [...]

mp3: Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Diddy Wah Diddy mp3: Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Who Do You Think You're Fooling I was thrilled to receive this record in the post the other day. Excuse the vinyl nerdiness but I feel compelled to tell you that it's a US promo copy, first pressing -- as demonstrated by the incorrect songwriting credit on the Diddy Wah Diddy side. I bought it from a true aficionado who has most of Beefheart's 45s in his collection. He reckons that, [...]

She's Too Much For My Mirror & Human Gets Me Blues Connaissez-vous l'émission Chorus ?

After a day of indolence yesterday I am back on the horse, so to speak, to bring you our favourite time-wasting indulgence: the Five Friday Favourites. I can't think of anything more tedious and unfair on Friday than being expected to actually do the work which we are paid to sit at our desks and do, so I spend the day pottering about on the internet, sorting out artwork for Toad releases, playing silly computer games, and keeping a nice Photoshop rendering ready to pop up onto my screen should anyone happen to walk by. What are [...]

In Justice as fairness, then, the equal basic liberties are the same for each citizen and the question of how to compensate for a lesser liberty does not arise. But the worth, or usefulness, of liberty is not the same for everyone. As the difference principle permits, some citizens have, for example, greater income and wealth and therefore greater mean of achieving their ends. When this principle is satisfied, however, this lesser worth of liberty is compensated for in this sense: the all-purpose means available to the least advantaged members of society to achieve their ends would be even less [...]

Last Hallowe'en I decided to get into the spirit of things by posting a blog about songs that scare the knickers off of my goolies. You can read it here . Not much has changed since. However, I do take back my ill-judged slagging of metal. This was before I did a piece about Metal for Analogue magazine and found myself not only liking a lot of the stuff, but feeling the genuinely chill touch of some of the genre's bleaker exponents. A lot of it is cartoonish exaggeration though, but the fans are as aware of [...]

Today I am ticking one of those "must listen to at some point" albums off the list. Not as difficult a listen as I'd been led to believe. Possibly because I like a lot of stuff that it's obviously influenced. MP3: Sweet Sweet Bulbs

With the recent turmoil over who's RTH this is I thought I'd offer myself up as a sacrificial lamb in an effort to bring everyone together...against me. Trust me, I realize that I may very well be committing some sort of rock nerd harikari (spelled correctly, looked it up.) Beefheart is god! Right? Read more » Original post blogged on b2evolution .

On their self-titled debut full-length [ buy ], Vancouver, Canada's The Green Hour Band blends all the best elements of psychedelia ( The Yardbirds , Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd ), proto-punk ( The Stooges , The Velvet Underground ) and good old fashioned garage rock ( Captain Beefheart , MC5 ) into some of the best hyper-retro 60's revival that I've heard in a long while. I love 'Safe as Milk'. I mean 'Trout Mask' and 'Lick My Decals Off' have probably got more going for them after concentrated listens but 'Safe as Milk' is so much more accessible and veers from heartbreaking ballads (I'm Glad) to wig-outs like Zig Zag which has the best bass break on it ever. Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band - Zig Zag Wanderer Get a copy of Safe as Milk from here.
