Just a slight update to share: In part one of these themed posts, I said I had 22 tracks. Well, as I often do, I tinker a bit with these compilations after I start posting them. Some tracks came to my attention that just HAD to be on the collection, and while I tried to remove what I could, the total running time (which I want to keep under 80 minutes total so these can be made into a CD compilation) was too long. After much picking and deleting, I am down to 20 songs. [...]

A mallard is both a species of duck and a make of steam locomotive. The short-lived band Mallard probably named itself after both, as there´s a flock of ducks flying over a train on the cover of their fine self-titled first album. Mallard started out as an offshoot of Captain Beefheart´s Magic Band. Unsatisfied - and rightly so - with the quality of the Beefheart-album Unconditionally Guaranteed , guitarist Bill Harkleroad (aka Zoot Horn Rollo) and bassist Mark Boston (aka Rockette Morton) decided to form their own ensemble. John French (aka Drumbo) joined as well, but went back to [...]
The Brute Chorus Chateau b/w The Cuckoo & Stolen Heart Sounding like a curious hybrid of The Zutons , Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa The Brute Chorus' debut single is in a genre of it's own. With it's intelligent [...]

for those interested, you can stream the new marah record here . i havent listened to it yet, but as seeing they have made a few of my favorite records of recent memory, i dont see them disappointing now. unless of course they go down the float away... alley - that record truly is a piece of shit. btw, angels of destruction out today. they play at smiths olde bar on 1.31.08. here are two sets of peel sessions by captain beefheart. i only recently got into his work, [...]
Happy New Year, Rock Town Hall! Before I share my burdens with you in the coming year, I thought I'd butter you up with a few tracks that have been rocking my world the last few weeks. Perhaps you know them. Perhaps you don't. My hope is they will find a place in your heart over the coming days and buy me a little favor with you in the coming months. Here's a track that I believe fits Mr. Mod's recently stated preference for productions that don't shoehorn the [...]

This one is dedicated to Matador - what do you think? More info on Captain Beefheart here. Captain Beefheart - Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles

James Chapman is a very talented young man blah blah blah made his record in his bedroom blah blah blah signed by Mute blah blah blah Mercury nominee blah blah blah world tour blah blah blah blah blah from solo-fiddler to celeb-hob-nobber in 12 easy months, an example to us all, talent will always win out, a demonstration of a fair and fateful universe blah blah blah, yes yes yes, we know we know we know. So you don't need me rambling on about his music for a few witty yet informative paragraphs, and then posting a [...]
Ha...and they said that Captain Beefheart had no sense of timing. I can't decide if I love or loathe this. At least there's some humour to it. Captain Beefheart - Well [remix].mp3
Oh, these busy days! They don't give me any opportunity to do the things I want to do, like sit around in my boxers all day, eating corn chips and drinking Coke. Instead, Fawn called at the ungodly hour of 11:00am asking if I wanted to do laundry, complain to the car wash place for screwing up her car, and go to the farmer's market. Jeez lady, what am I, made of energy!? I'm kidding. I like hanging out with Fawn and trying to zing her at every opportunity. We accomplished all our errands today, and I just [...]
I'm assuming the following Captain Beefheart video features the drumming of John "Drumbo" French . I love Beefheart and I have no qualms whatsoever with the drumming of John French. He's perfect for those seminal Magic Band albums, led by Trout Mask Replica . I'm not remembering all the details about the guy's role in the band, but beside playing drums and guitar in various formations of the Magic Band, I believe he was Beefheart's envoy to the rest of his band. Isn't that true? [...]

I only put in an hour of work today because I became really bored and didn't feel like wasting my time not knowing what the hell I'm supposed to be doing. If I'm going to waste my time doing anything, it's going to be writing another dumb list for this page. Speaking of which... TOP TEN "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO...." 10) Bobby Hurley - New Jersey's own All-American point guard for the Duke Blue Devils, who was hit by a drunk driver during his rookie season with the Sacramento Kings. He was also in [...]
More than MLK on this day. Happy 66th, Don.MP3: Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Zig Zag Wanderer...
Captain Beefheart - Dirty Blue Gene The world needs more Captain Beefheart . Specifically, you need more Captain Beefheart. To rectify this problem, here is Dirty Blue Gene recorded live at the Showbox, Seattle on the 15th of January, 1981. It was Don Van Vliet's 40th birthday. If you've got ears, you've got to listen. That is all.

For the second holiday music mix, I have compiled 24 tracks about that fat, jolly dude from the North Pole. There may be better versions of some of the songs out there (i.e. Eartha Kitt's Santa Baby is far better than the Pussycat's) but the theme that binds this mix together is ridiculousness. Whether it's the inclusion of two Lynyrd Skynyrd songs (yes, Skynyrd did indeed release an Xmas album), a Slim Shady parody or the Cheech and Chong classic, this is one goofy mix of Santa-centic tunes. 1 ~ Brave Combo: Santa's Polka [...]
