The Stark Palace Genre: Alternative / Indie / Blues From: Borders, United Kingdom One of the Devil's favourite tracks on the Cherryade Christmas album (find out more at Christmas On Planet Peel ) is the wierd, wonderful oddity that is The Stark Palace's 'Saw What Your Momma Did'. Sounding like a Beefheart and Zappa inspired take on 'I Saw Momma Kissing Santa Claus' it feels like it's been implanted in my [...]

Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band : The Blimp (Mousetrapreplica) [ purchase ] When it comes to tricky beats, the king has to be Captain Beefheart , who feels 4/4 time is "mother's heartbeat music" - the guy absolutely loathes even time signatures. "I don't believe in time, you know, 4/4 and all that stuff. Frank Zappa believes in time and we could never get it together. He writes all his music and gets sentimental about good old rock 'n' roll, but that's appeasement music." - [...]
Filed under: Around the World Spinner.com : There has been discussion of late, including from this writer, concerning what is perceived as a distinct lack of protest or even topical music during these troubled times. Perhaps overlooked in the current debates is that some of the most profound... Read more

When your career has been spent pushing envelopes, subverting musical styles and pursing surrealism to the periphery of rational thought, what's left to shock your audience? Go mainstream, of course. That's what Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band did in 1972 when they hired Van Morrison/Carly Simon/Doobie Brothers producer Ted Templeman to guide their seventh record, Clear Spot. The album's relative accessibility and conventionality must have seemed the most radical of all possible moves for the Captain, aka Don Van Vliet, who spent the previous three years engaged in the gnarled blues and anarchic experimentalism of Trout Mask [...]

Run Paint Run Run "Fifty years from now you'll wish you'd gone 'wow'." - Captain Beefheart, conscious of his visionary powers, in a 1980 NME interview. As I read through and participated in Townsman Sammy 's candid Bullshit On: Captain Beefheart thread, I sensed some members of Rock Town Hall willing to give this admittedly difficult artist a fair shake . It's a [...]
In 1976, Captain Beefheart recorded the album Bat Chain Puller . In the 32 years since then, it's never had an official release, although bootlegs of varying quality can be found. The original tapes are currently owned by the estate of Frank Zappa, and they seem content to let the entire project gather dust. Like all unreleased albums, it's acquired an aura of mystery over the years, despite its availability. The thing is, like most unreleased albums, the production was never finalised. For many Beefheart fans, that makes it all the better. [...]
