Lots of the time, when I'm looking for a song or examples of a band's catalog, I turn to the archive . It's a fount of great stuff, and these are the best covers of the lot for this year. And by "best," I mean most interesting. And by "the lot" I mean the ones I was able to find. And this post is so big, I've busted it across more than one post... A is for A Little Less Conversation-Ha Ha The Moose (Elvis Presley). Check these guys out. HHTM [...]

As 2008 comes to a close, everyone is starting to think about the upcoming year and what will be coming out. There's never a shortage of artists who we always want to be releasing new materials, and already, I've started looking for what will be coming out in 2009. Here's what I'm really looking forwards to: Untitled - Carbon Leaf Carbon Leaf is my all-time favorite band. I've seen them numerous times in concert, and for the past year and a half, there's been talk of first two albums, then a new album and [...]

Thanks to all those who have served. The War Was In Color - Carbon Leaf Hype - Look

I'm an old fart now. But in 1980, I turned ten. So the years 1980-1989 where the ones where most of my musical preferences were formed. It was when I started forming opinions of my own. And as you can imagine, I had a lot of them. And I was always right. Prior to buying my first record—Pink Floyd's The Wall—I had been listening to my parents' rock records: The Mamas and the Papas, The Beatles, and a little Tom Hall. Now, lots of folks slam the '80s for making sterile, redundant, meaningless [...]

If all goes well, I'm off for a couple days... Leavin' on A Jet Plane - John Denver This Time Tomorrow - The Kinks International Airport - Carbon Leaf Hype - Support

This weekend, I turned my apartment's heater on for the first time in four or five months. Fall's officially on in Vermont, which now means long sleeves, hats, a spectacular array of colors in the hills and leaf-peepers coming to gawk. Growing up in rural country and dirt roads, I have a special appreciation for the changing of the seasons. It's a beautiful sight. Is This the Fall? - Carbon Leaf [...]

Over the weekend, I went to see Carbon Leaf for probably the 6th or so time up in Burlington. There's really not any point in reviewing these guy's live shows any more, because I generally gush about them, and everything that I've said has been said before already. Their opening act, the Clayton Sabine Band , wasn't too bad - They sounded a lot like a Pearl Jam band, but had some decent lyrics to back up their sound. I don't think that they're a group that I'll follow, such as Stephen Kellogg and [...]

Once again, it's the close of one month, and in with another one. This past month saw the return of a number of favorites of mine with new material, and all around, some fantastic material from a numbe of really good bands. Shelly - The Alternate Routes This is a song that I've been hearing live when I've seen [...]
Carbon Leaf is getting back on the road a bit more, so it's time for one of my usual updates with how they're doing. As I've said before - these guys are one of my all time favorite bands. I can't get enough of them. I've spoken with one of the band members, who's told me that they're shooting for a new release sometime next February, although the details are a little sketchy, and they don't have a title yet. Hopefully sooner, but you know how these things are. Second, they're coming back up to Vermont! I don't [...]

I live in Washington, DC. There are a lot of fancy words and acronyms continually churned into hot air here. Most of it rises out of Capitol Hill and from a specific residence on Pennsylvania Avenue and gets blown up our rear ends. Twice this week (and it's only Tuesday) I've heard young congressional staffers assert that ending the war in Iraq is not a relevant 2008 presidential campaign issue anymore as the "Surge" has been a success. The economic condition is the focus of the country's political attention; the need to ease the American family's suffering over mortgage shock [...]

I'm hopeful. I don't want to get ahead of myself, but for the first time in a while, hopeful. Comfort - Carbon Leaf Hold You In My Arms - Ray LaMontagne Stop the Bus - Grace Potter & The Nocturnals Dreaming - Sara Wheeler Song for You [...]
As I've mentioned before, Carbon Leaf, one of my all-time favorite bands, is going to be releasing a new album (or two - they might be re-working Meander), and they've just posted up a demo of some of what they're working on: My Blues Have Turned to the Black Master - Carbon Leaf Not sure what I think about this - it's an early demo, from the sounds of it, but it sounds darker and moody. I guess we'll see. [...]
Carbon Leaf's excited for Valentine's day. Barry Privitt, the lead singer, has posted up this video for the day, and for their fans, to share the Carbon Leaf love, they've put up their top ten songs as rated by users on iLike. Enjoy! What About Everything? Life Less Ordinary Let Your Troubles Roll By [...]

So, last night, Carbon Leaf returned to the Higher Ground for another amazing show. Despite the winter weather advisory, they pulled in a full house. They were fronted by the Adam Ezra Group, whom I had never heard of, but was quite impressed by. Adam Ezra Grou Set List 1 Opening (Missed this one) 2 Gave Into Pressure 3 Nightly Gesture, I Call You 4 All Band [...]
I adore a good cover! The following are the ones that really amuse me. I'm On Fire by Carbon Leaf , covering Bruce Springsteen. They do this one a lot live, this particular version is from a set they did for iTunes. It can be found here. I am not a big fan of the original (I have issues with Bruce's voice), but this I love. Bron y Aur Stomp-She Talks to Angels by Carbon Leaf and Toby Lightman , covering Led [...]

Having driven for nine hours to get back to Harrisonburg from Ohio, and after taking a drive through eastern West Virginia today, I've been thinking about this mixtape a bit lately. Somewhere in this notion of driving are memories of tipsy girls, parties, and the sweetly interested guys and friends who clean things (and people) up. Josh Ritter - Kathleen Bright Eyes - Another Travelin' Song Elephant Parade - Riding in your car Wilco - Passenger Side Carbon Leaf - [...]
