If you pay attention to the news, you know there's a catastrophe happening down south in the Gulf of Mexico. It started in late April, when an offshore oil well exploded and began leaking crude oil into the water. Since then as much as a million gallons continue to spill out each day, while the oil company feebly tries to stop the flow. Meanwhile the thick toxic stuff is washing into Gulf shorelines and threatens to kill wildlife, ruin the wetlands and destroy the livelihoods of tens of thousands of Americans. It seems to me that [...]

We have a soft spot for Carbon/Silicon because it is Mick Jones and well its Mick Jones isn't it. Clearly not a patch on The Clash, and not as good as Big Audio Dynamite, nevertheless its Mick Jones isn't it.Their first effort The Last Post was actually very solid with a couple of standout tracks (especially the catchy The News which was pretty much an updating of Good Morning Britain that Jones

This is probably is the place where we should be counting off the best albums or songs of 2009, or of the decade, but we're not gonna do that. And it would also be appropriate to make a new year's resolution or two. OK: 1. We're going to keep on rockin' in the new year. 2. We resolve to help you rock in the new year. But we want to take this opportunity to restate our mission: to share with you some cool music and interesting stories throughout the year. We love the music, and we hope that [...]

Arrow Clare and the Reasons These days find many bands attempting styles of yesteryear but few sound like they actually belong there. With Arrow , their new full length release, Clare and the Reasons have crafted an album which sits naturally between Pet Sounds and the soundtrack for What's New Pussycat . It's best described as "lush," an exercise in early 70's symphonic pop. The combination of orchestral glides, Beatles-esque arrangements, and Burt Bacharach infused romanticism make the album a wise choice for [...]

The band is offering up their latest 12-song effort without asking anything but your love and affection in return. So what are you waiting for? Go grab the album here. Carbon/

André from Rotten Hill Gang has written to update me on the gig situation: "We don't have many gigs lined up because we're finishing some mixing first. Well, actually, we've done the mixes and we're polishing off some links between the tracks, which currently comprise Joseph Fiennes reading some Shakespeare over a dub backing, but that [...]

The South by Southwest music conference is a big event every year in Austin that masquerades as an important opportunity for music industry types to get together, discuss their business and get exposed to a few new acts. What it really is - and it shall hereafter be referred to as SXSW - is a huge-ass party with more than a thousand music acts playing nearly continuously for about four days. Big Fun. Over the years we've covered this event for various news media outlets, but we stopped doing that about 10 years ago. Now we just go for the [...]
