The duo of Richard Davies and Eric Matthews, also known as Cardinal , just released their second album "Hymns" - 18 years after the band's debut album and have announced their first ever tour as a band. One of the stops on the short tour is at Strange Matter on Monday, May 14. Davies felt that the time had come to bring these songs into a live setting for the first time. Matthews, who chooses to stay on the recording side of things will not be a part of the live show (but gave his full blessing), [...]
Earlier in the year Cardinal, the duo of Richard Davies and Eric Matthews, released their first album in nearly two decades. Now, we have the announcement that a handful of live dates will be undertaken in May. "These songs are special to a lot of people, and more importantly, they are special to me," explained Davies. "It has been a long wait to take them on the road, and while it may be a little ragged compared to the recordings, I can't wait." Eric Matthews, however, will not be a part of the live shows. "It's [...]

Ryan Adams will release an iTunes Session EP on April 24th via EMI. Recorded earlier this year at the historic Capitol Studios in Hollywood, the eight-track effort features cuts from across Adams' career, including the Whiskeytown-era "Houses On The Hill" and "Lucky Now", from last year's Ashes & Fire . The EP also features Adams' cover of Bob Mould's "Black Sheets of Rain", which he first performed at last year's Mould tribute concert . Sadly, his Passions theme song cover wasn't cleared by NBC . Below, you can find the EP's tracklist, [...]

After an 18-year absence, Cardinal has finally returned with Hymns (Fire), its sophomore album. To rabid fans of the bi-coastal duo who'd all but given up hope of ever hearing a sequel to their masterful self-titled 1994 debut, that freshman year must have seemed interminable. When its first longplayer appeared on an indie-rock scene buzzing [...]
MP3: Cardinal – Carbolic Smoke Ball

We haven't had more than seven days that've dropped below freezing, but it is still technically winter. I keep hoping we'll get one snowstorm before it's over. Maybe. Here for you, there's two bands from Finland, four from Australia, Dreams and Dreems, Cats and Cates, guitars and synths. One Dinowalrus. I think this will be the last Wintry Mix of 2012. But look for Spring Fever in April. DOWNLOAD WINTRY MIX 2.22.2012 Tracklist: 1. Eux Autres - Right [...]

Cardinal: Hymns When Cardinal's seminal first album was released in 1994, its chamber pop stood in valiant opposition to grunge, which was then covering the land like a swarm of plaid-clad locusts. Eighteen years later, with grunge a slightly whiffy memory, Cardinal return with different songs but the same sound. There are elaborately orchestrated arrangements and an assortment of instruments, courtesy of Eric Matthews - who spent some of those 18 years as an [...]

The international musical duo Cardinal caught our attention the first time we heard a couple of their orchestra pop and folk art tracks from the just-released album, Hymns. The duo - comprised of musicians Richard Davies and Eric Matthews - qualify for a series we started a while ago called Way Back Now - which [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
In the grungy trenches of mid-'90s pop, English baroque had become a thing of the past. So naturally, in the grand tradition of circular trends, a movement emerged to reinstate the lush strings and harmonies of The Beatles and Left Banke. International duo Cardinal was one of the first to do so with its 1994 self-titled debut before similar bands like Belle & Sebastian arguably eclipsed Cardinal's notoriety. Six years after Cardinal 's reissue, vocalist Richard Davies and multi-instrumentalist Eric Matthews have released a new LP, Hymns . Now facing a musical landscape in which orchestral [...]
Eighteen years after Cardinal's first record, this uneven sophomore album falters too often by mimicking the first record, and, as a result, the impact of both records may be diminished. Richard Davies and Eric Matthews are, in a way, unsung chamber-pop heroes. When they released their eponymous debut as Cardinal in 1994, it flew under the radar, but it ended up becoming one of those hidden pop gems. Its understated, lush yet gauzy orchestration, its penchant for near-neo-classical flourishes, and its bittersweet, dreamy feel made it an often arresting listen. Cardinal is a perfect headphones record, because it's best [...]

If 2012 is really the apocalypse, we'll at least be serenaded by lots of great music as our world goes up in flames. Yes, it's another great week of new releases filled with KEXP favorites, new and old. In fact, we've long been fans of Nada Surf , who return with their sixth album this week, which according to our Music Director, Don Yates, "finds them injecting some welcome additional energy and aggression into their melodic pop-rock sound via quicker tempos and some bristling electric guitar lines." Fans needn't fear that the New York band is trying to recapture [...]
