BLINKING PIGS

JLo Wants to Turn Puerto Rico A-List

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are planning to turn Fajardo, a city in Puerto Rico, into the Hollywood of the Caribbean. The couple of singers and actors, who are both of Puerto Rican descent, want to build a movie studio there to attract more A-list movies and TV shows to the island. Wyclef Jean will not be Haiti's next president

Wyclef Jean will not be Haiti's next president, according to US reports. The 37-year-old did not make the final list of approved candidates, according to American newspaper the Los Angeles Times. An electoral official told the publication that Wyclef did not satisfy the legal requirements to run for president, mainly because he primarily lives in New Jersey and not the Caribbean island. The unnamed official said: "He is not on the list as I speak." The former Fugees star was born in Haiti but moved to New York [...]

The Caribbean Collaborate on Art Installation

The Caribbean Collaborate on Art Installation Everyone's favourite folk-pop deconstructionists The Caribbean have collaborated on an installation with Matt Hollis as part of Pittsburgh's Arts on N Street Festival. Their 21-minute work entitled 'Curtains Drawn' soundtracks Hollis's 'Incubator' installation. This piece is likely to feature on a forthcoming Caribbean release on Hidden Shoal of more abstract, sample-based music. Meanwhile, their new album Discontinued Perfume is soon to be released on the excellent Hometapes label.

The Rude Magnificence of Nature

It has been posited that as the continents began to pull apart in the Triassic Period, the crest of land that forms the Colombian coast and the folds of the Sierra Nevada mountain range became the cradle for all terrestrial life. There are still many primitive plants that flourish in the Andes, and it would make sense that at its point of origin, life would be teeming with diversity and a wide array of habitat to support it. I imagine that in the Caribbean heat, the land came apart like taffy, the Rio Magdalena like a long bead of equatorial [...]

Download: Roots Manuva & Wrongtom – "Butterfly Crab Walk"

Going full on Caribbean and dub, this new album coming September 21 from Roots Manuva and cohort Wrongtom called Duppy Writer seems like it's taken all sorts of 123 instrumentals from the pre-blue beat era and just mashed British-tongued rapping over it. To a great effect, no less. The album is led by single "Jah [...]

Last week I finally giddied back up on the horse. Stand up sit down one. Aboot time. One might say. She has been a while. By my reckoning a couple months shy of a year. Long enough. Day of the show. Usual gibber... Ah shur I don't actually even like doing it (Still debatable whether [...]

Sea! No Hangover…

Woke up. Stood up. Swaying. Big time. Bounced off one wall. Slid into the bathroom. Drunk? Eh. Hungover? No. Should be. Thankfully. Not in the slightest. Just a tad tired. Drink all the fruity Merlins, Jerk and Merkatinis cocktails that I can come up with. Hangovers don't exist in the land I'm in now. Figured [...]

Tonight: Group of the Altos, All Tiny Creatures, The Caribbean

I am thirty years old today. While I'm not sure what my friends have in store for me tonight, I do plan on leaving The Hold Steady's set at Summerfest and going directly to the Cactus Club , where, in my opinion, one of the best line-up's of the summer awaits. We've already shared our love of Milwaukee's own Group of the Altos , (they also play Summerfest tomorrow) who played our SXSW showcase in Austin in March. They're anchoring tonight's [...]

The Caribbean Tour and Forthcoming Album

The Caribbean Tour and Forthcoming Album Lovers of awesomeness take note - The Caribbean have a new album coming out in October through the wonderful Hometapes label. The band are currently touring in support of the new record, Discontinued Perfume , and are in fact about a third of the way through wowing audiences with some the new material along with their backlog of gloriously inventive pop. The band are also running a tour diary over at The Vinyl District which, as anyone who knows the band would expect, is a hoot. Last lot of dates for now include: [...]

Your Man on the Street

Your Man on the Street Image by HeySandra via Flickr Well the summer season is upon us and, needless to say, there are many different things going on. Up until this point, this blog has dealt with mostly three different categories. The Atlanta reggae scene, the worldwide reggae scene, and Highlanda Sound System. Well I am here to add yet another category, the New York scene. While I will be concentrating on mostly Caribbean topics, I will be covering an array of things. It will be a [...]
