[Happy birthday to Neil Finn ... Now on to a busy night on the circuit:] Big shows at opposite ends of the sonic spectrum: The Prodigy , behind their muscular new album "Invaders Must Die," return to L.A., and if Soundcheck's review of Wednesday's show at the Grove of Anaheim is any indication, the Palladium will be no place for weaklings tonight. ... Mark Kozelek brings the sublime sounds of Sun Kil Moon to the El Rey Theatre, where Mia Doi Todd opens. [...]
We first came across Carina Round supporting the Gutter Twins on tour last year. Kooky is the first word that comes to mind, all vocal swoops and hollers, but that doesn't really do her justice. The lazy references would be Bjork or Kate Bush, but there is more than that going on, and a much tougher edge under that oddball veneer - Patti Smith yes, Iggy Pop definitely!Above all though, the lady

[Happy birthday to Jason LaRocca of the local punk outfit the Briggs . Here's where to rock out tonight:] Busy, busy night, from the big spaces to the big rooms and on down. That highly anticipated Nine Inch Nails / Jane's Addiction tour hits the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, and also under the evening skies is the second night of the Allman / Doobie brothers at the Greek Theatre. ... My favorites for the evening: M83 and James Yuill visit the Glass [...]
Things You Should Know is the new EP from British singer/songwriter Carina Round. The EP is a stepping stone before the musician releases a new album funded by fan donations, as is the latest trend. The songs on the 5-track EP are moody and atmostpheric. The opener "Backseat" features an incredibly patient build into a explosive epiphany ending. "Please Don't Stop" is an ominous soundtrack,

[Happy birthday and many more, Stevie Wonder ...] What does rock 'n' roll, Russian style, sound like? Two parts simmering classic rock, one part fractured pop and ... pretty cool, actually. Mumiy Troll , originally scheduled to visit L.A. in March as part of the Russian Winter Festival, plays tonight at the Roxy; it's a makeup date for the show that was scotched due to singer Ilya Lagutenko's emergency appendectomy. Some things on the quartet's album "Comrade Ambassador" need no translation — especially their cover of "California Dreaming." [...]

A couple days late but late is better than never. I think I'll do 5 songs each time for this thing-5 is a good number. So this week's 5 are: Disturbia by Rihanna, from Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded [Def Jam, 2008] // Watch on Youtube Okay, there's a certain amount of cheese here: the unfortunate title, the spoken intro, etc. But I had VH1 on (it was 9AM-that or Golden Girls reruns) while unpacking and this was good enough to actually make me stop [...]

Photo by Frank Yang Oh the wonders that a solid eight hours of sleep can do. After finally being able to sleep in Saturday, I was actually feeling rather human again and almost eager to tackle the final night of NxNE rather than fearful. Up until Swervedriver , my NxNE had consisted pretty much exclusively of Canadian acts so I opted to devote the last evening of the festival to those acts who, for whatever reason, thought that crossing international boundaries and coming all the way to Canada would be a good [...]

It might be a Monday, but since it is Labor Day, there are a few shows of note happening in DC. The Cinematics are at Rock 'N Roll Hotel and they will be joined by Carina Round and The Perfects . There is also a Federal Reserve Presents show at IOTA , featuring Baltimore's Wax & Wane . The Cinematics - A Strange Education Carina Round - Come To You [...]

It's amazing how an average album can be salvaged by one completely fantastic song, and my crush this month is a prime example of that: Carina Round's sophomore album Slow Motion Addict . The disc sounds like PJ Harvey fronting a glammy version of Franz Ferdinand, and, at first glance, that should be a pretty good combination, right? In practice, tho, it's a bit disappointing: the songs generally lack memorable hooks and choruses, and the production is far too slick and generic for my tastes (thanks a lot , Glen Ballard). However, Round's voice is a [...]
It feels good to be consistently posting again here on the blog, as it makes me feel like i've been coasting for the first five months. I don't know what has spurred this sudden interest in blogging, but i'm not gonna complain. Hopefully this will last for a while, and not end up with me deciding to quit in two weeks. The one constant on this blog is the Daily Graboid, and this week it doesn't disappoint. There are some quality releases including The Long Blondes' Someone To Drive You Home (which I [...]

A future look at Pela - the Brooklyn band will be live on the Morning Show next Monday The Summer Pledge Drive is off to a roaring start! We walked into it with $25,000 in early support from the web and pre-drive talk, and then Leon kicked out another $9,000 on [...]
