I got pulled over tonight. Nothing big, just a bad taillight. The cop may have thought I was trying to evade him, pulling into the dark, always vacant Skagit Valley College parking lot late on a Friday night. As soon as I rounded the corner, his lights went on. He was really nice, just wanted to give me a heads up that the light was off. Made sure my license was valid, I had insurance, and the old beater BMW was a registered vehicle. And he let me [...]

Being that my typical night consists of hitting the sack at around 10pm, and that my new radio show is Friday nights from 10pm to midnight, I figured that my second show would center around the theme of sleep . So I pieced together a playlist of bedroom pop, chill wave, dreamy shoegaze and what I've dubbed as psychedelic ambiance. I took over for Stuarto just after 10 with a brief description of my first track, which I don't believe made it on air. The switch-over was a bit rushed [...]
Jen Ghetto :: photo by Abbey Simmons In addition to fronting Seattle's finest Blink 182 cover band, Jen Ghetto has recorded a rendition of Ke$ha's "Tik-Tok." Yes, you read that correctly. No, no one slipped anything in to your morning coffee. Best known as the whispery ache in Carissa's Wierd and sad bastard solo artist [...]
I take my eyes off of Katie Holmes for a couple of years and look what happens... "Here come the water works..." - Regina Bouie (the woman I affectionately call "mom") This was my least favorite phrase as a child ("You can't have that Nintendo game until you get your report card," was a very close second). [...]

Carissa's Wierd — "Tucson" It's been seven years since we've heard any new material from Seattle-band Carissa's Wierd (misspelling intended), with their 2004 LP I Before E . They released a freaking awesome compilation record last year, but hopes for new material seemed pretty low. News broke earlier this year of a new 7" on Sub Pop , Tucson / Meredith & Iris , and that [...]

Carissa's Wierd Carissa's Wierd are reuniting again for a pair of shows in celebration of the new Tucson 7" out now on Hardly Art ! The 7" is the band's first new material in over seven years. Listen to half of it, "Meredith & Iris", below. Carissa's Wierd may be unjustly known as the springboard for Band of Horses and eventually Grand Archives . Benjamin Bridwell and Mat Brooke were both members [...]

Last year, the excellent Seattle indie sad-core outfit Carissa's Wierd reunited for a one-off concert in their hometown to celebrate the release of a new retrospective compilation , They'll Only Miss You When You Leave: Songs 1996-2003 , via Hardly Art. That release — complete with remastered cuts of "Die" and "The Color That Your Eyes Changed With the Color of Your Hair" — recruited a slew of new listeners while leaving longtime fans hungry for more material. Enter "Meredith & Iris," a new Mat Brooke (Grand Archives, Band of Horses) and Jenn Ghetto-led [...]

Carissa's Wierd , one of Seattle's hidden gems, has surfaced once again. The band is best known for their heart-rending and honest lyrics woven with piano and orchestral strings. Their live shows are intimate, emotional, and hushed. After breaking up in 2003, some members moved on to other prominent musical endeavors such as Band of Horses , Grand Archives , and the solo project of Sera Cahoone . We all thought the tragically sweet music of Carissa's Wierd was laid to rest. Last July, it came as a surprise to hear that the band would celebrate the release [...]
Carissa's Wierd ::: photo by Josh Lovseth Sometimes you get what you wish, I don't have to remember here, you're really close this time. Last July after a chatty one-off reunion show at The Showbox, the largest show Carissa's Wierd had ever played, fans old & new alike wondered aloud ... would there be more? Would [...]

I am a huge Carissa's Wierd fan. If you are too, you know exactly what I'm talking about - the die-hard fan gets a little extra out of the music, hears a little bit more, and has a deeper, seemingly one-on-one experience with it. New music, for a band that parted ways several years past, is enough to bring tears to your eyes. "Tucson" b/w "Meredith & Iris" is such material and Hardly Art has made the latter from the single available for stream. [...]

Carissa's Wierd , one of the seminal indie rock outfits of Seattle through the 90s and early 'oughts, have released a b-side track from a batch of new recordings they have reportedly been working on. The band, which formed in 1995, broke up in 2003, with many of its members being disseminated into current chamber-pop and folky groups- including Band of Horses and Grand Archives. Mat Brooke, lead singer of both Carissa's Wierd and Grand Archives, also went on to found the Redwood bar, which is very noteworthy to me because while living in Capitol Hill I drank [...]

Last summer, Seattle indie-rock outfit Carissa's Weird reunited for a hometown show and retrospective compilation . Now, the band - whose members went on to form Band of Horses and Grand Archives, and spawned the solo projects of Jenn Ghetto (S) and Sera Cahoone - has recorded two new tracks, their first in seven years, which will be released on a 73 and digitally on September 13th via Hardly Art. Below, you can stream the B-side, "Meredith & Iris"; the A-side is called "Tucson". Along with the single, Carissa's Weird have booked a show in [...]
My life changed in December when I got my first functioning record player since I lived with my parents. And in the past month I've turned into the vinyl equivalent of Jon Stewart's character in Half Baked. "Yeah, but have you done it ON VINYL?" I know, its annoying and I'm sure the obsession will [...]
Damien Jurado ::: photo by Abbey Simmons Our big, written properly, not just a list of The Top 25 Northwest Albums of 2010 is coming soon, really, WE PROMISE. But today I wanted to share my personal favorites of 2010. Also, my number one most listened to local album of 2010 was basically a "Best [...]
Drew Grow and the Pastors' Wives ::: photo by Josh Lovseth We had an incredible 2010 here at Sound on the Sound and it was in large part thanks to the following MVPs. These were the artists, albums, labels, festivals, bookers and sound guys that inspired and impressed us most and these are the people that [...]
These are a few of my favorite local albums. Without further adieu.. Album I'm Most Likely to Listen to When I'm Driving to Portland - Demons and Lakes by Ravenna Woods I don't know what it is about traversing Interstate Five for a matter of hours that inspires me to find my CD wallet and insert this [...]
Grand Hallway ::: photo by Abbey Simmons Like most music writers, I spent much of my December 2010 listening to every album deemed important by other music writers I respected as well as personal favorites in an attempt to make lists of the best releases of 2010. Seeing that you have yet to see a Best [...]

"Nothing Like You" by Frightened Rabbit was my top song obsession, photo by ipickmynose 2010 has been the oddest of my life, full of contradictions: the most amazing and most boring times; the most lovelorn and most disinterested; the most outgoing and most antisocial. It'll take years to see what it all means and where it will lead, but I have to say it was pretty good. But these contradictions led to a vast and odd array of music getting caught in my head, twisting and turning around in there and begging to [...]
