Last week, I was catching up with Rachel, a dear friend of the blog, and she asked me what had been in my headphones recently. After a few false starts in writing a list of stuff to her, I thought to myself, 'Wait, you've been absolute crap with your posting consistency at CotP. Why don't you re-evaluate your neglect and write this for the blog?' So without further adieu, the next two posts are what I've been listening to of late. Hope you don't mind that I posted them here. 1958 Fred Katz and His Jammers, Dexterity. Carmen McRae, Flamingo. Charlie Parker's "Dexterity," recorded in October 1947, is about as typical as bebop gets--it's yet another variation on the "I Got Rhythm" changes, with a knotty opening theme delivered by the two horns, followed by a steeplechase Bird solo. Miles Davis and Duke Jordan dash out solos, the latter upended by a eight-bar

Why am I starting out the new year by posting something from last year? Well, I've gotten so many requests to repost these tracks that I figured I'd give you kids what you've been asking for. Actually, I just might run through some of my other old posts and see which ones people were saddest/angriest that I took down and put those back up, too. We'll see how I'm feeling. I have a real weakness for 80s movies and one of my favorites is [...]

I got an early Christmas present this year. My husband bought us a turntable (we haven't had a working one for years) AND he figured out how to rip vinyl and turn it into mp3s--all in the course of 24 hours, no less. This means not only is he incredibly gifted when it comes to this stuff, but that now I'll be able to venture back in time and relive the old days. Our first impulse upon hooking up the turntable was "let's play singles!" Anybody remember that? It's not the same when you do it with cds, you know? [...]

Get It Straight (Live) - Carmen McRae from Carmen Sings Monk on Bluebird (1988). Money Hustlin' Woman - Amos Milburn from Bad Bad Whiskey 1946-1950 on EPM Musique (2001). My advisor, who is great, has this habit of asking questions outloud and answering them to communicate his points. Are you familiar with this habit? Yes you are, it is quite common. So in his honor today's post follows this format. Is this post thrown together quickly? Absolutely, I've been quite [...]

I have a real weakness for 80s movies and one of my favorites is Real Genius . This 1985 film stars Val Kilmer as Chris Knight, a brilliant, but not quite serious, student at a Cal Tech-type university. His new roommate is fifteen-year-old Mitch Taylor, one of the youngest students ever accepted to the university, played by Gabe Jarret . Together, they are to work on developing a powerful laser for their demanding professor, Dr. Hathaway (portrayed by William Atherton ), who has made a deal to give the laser to [...]
