THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Deftones w/ Hundred Waters Sunday, March 17 Tabernacle - 152 Luckie Street NW in Atlanta 30303 SOLD OUT! I'll admit it. I never would've thought that Deftones would've survived this long, much less thrived. But, hot damn, they still sound vicious and adventurous and, most of all, vital . Sure, they've traded away some of the raw aggression of their youth for an atmospheric grandeur that's less immediate and more nuanced, but that's what great bands do—they adapt and [...]
It’s Friday, which means that we’re watching the snow come down in New York and wishing we were in Austin, and also that it’s time for our regular roundup of new music to download for free. This week there's a new Glass Candy track from the upcoming After Dark II compilation, along with an unreleased Kristin Hersh track from a new solo record, a taste of John Vanderslice's David Bowie covers record, a new/old Wire track, new songs from Mudhoney and Thee Oh Sees, and a bunch of other stuff. None of this will cost you a dime, so [...]
Latest dispatch from Atlanta's Carnivores, featuring Bradford Cox. Culled from the sessions from the band's forthcoming LP, Second Impulse, due out in June. MP3: Carnivores :: Pillow Talk (featuring Bradford Cox)
Happy 2013 Metal Injection Junkies! 2012 proved to be a huge year for Metal Injection and even some of us personally, but in order to see any kind of growth, you sometimes have to look to the past to notice where you stand today. Last year I created a retrospective series called On The Record ... The post Frank's Favorite Records of 1987 appeared first on Metal Injection .

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Lightning Bolt w/ God's Balls, El Fossil Friday, August 24 The Goat Farm - 1200 Foster Street in Atlanta 30318 Admission $12 / Purchase Tickets Leave it to me to split town on one of the best live music weekends of the entire year. Not only is Atlanta getting its yearly bludgeoning courtesy of Nophest (now in its sixth year) and its non-stop four-day barrage of local music events, but there's also some fantastic national acts stopping [...]

Alternate title: Where's the Beef? Jeepers, one third of the way through already, so if playing this post on your turntable remember to set it to 33⅓ instead of 45rpm. Anyway, yes, day eleven means I couldn't resist the obvious option of turning the volume up a bit. Here are a selection of some mighty fine bands making lovely loud noises. Also, see, I do like music made post 1998. A Fight You Can't Win - Shout First/Loud Words Black International - [...]

"Better late than never," a phrase that is thrown around the 'offices' of Dead Horse March constantly; a de facto motto or mission statement. In honor of our time-tested traditions, I am appropriately one week late on this post. Enjoy these photographic representations of the incredible night that was Atlas Sound and Carnivores at Neumos. Much appreciation to the Atlanta-based rockers, Carnivores for [...]

"Last night I played 'My Sharona' for 55 minutes and the audience didn't care for it, which is weird since they requested it," Bradford Cox explained to the sold-out crowd at Chicago's Lincoln Hall on Saturday night. After hammering out a full hour set, the lone, gaunt songwriter swigged at his third (or fourth?) Pacifico, enjoying the balmy rapport with his audience, facetiously adding: "Whatever happens after this is up to me. I punched the clock already." After witnessing Cox perform live as Atlas Sound , it's easy to understand how he develops songs without actually writing [...]

“Folk balladry and hazy chamber pop” was the description of Atlas Sound given on the Hawthorne Theater ’s website. True enough, those words reflect Atlas Sound’s recorded material accurately. For the live performance of said material, they could not be further from the truth. Wearing his sunglasses at night like some modern-day Corey Hart, he tells us he wants to start with a book of erotic poetry he purchased at the Powell’s Books store across the street. Atlas Sound (real name Bradford Cox) dives into a dramatic reading of the anthology’s more graphic selections, which are then [...]

PET Back in July of last year I ended up getting myself a bit over excited by Edinburgh outfit, PET (another band who seem to love their Caps Lock button). Their debut EP, What You Building? was one of my surprise finds of the whole of 2011. Their follow up, Middle Child Syndrome was pretty decent, however, for me it didn't really live up the promise of their debut release. With the release of their new single/EP, Wear Black, the jury's still out on this one. Having shyed away from their more poppy side, this new release might [...]

I normally begin these posts highlighting upcoming local releases by taking a look back and discussing some of the records that came out the month before. But seeing as we've just crossed over into 2012, I think we should avert our eyes from 2011 and march relentless forward into the new year. And if January's crop of releases is any indication of what to expect, it appears that we're going to be in for an extremely productive and fruitful year in local music. There's a slew of great stuff to wade through here, both from established Atlanta veterans and newcomers [...]
