As noted previously (and as made obvious by the fact that this post is Volume 3 in a series), in recognition of our return to the Outer Banks for the fourth time since 2008, we're in the midst of a set of Vacation Coverfolk features pulled from the archives of past trips to the North Carolina coast with a newly penned post on The Avett Brothers scheduled for the end of the week as a triumphant finale to our collected survey of music of, from, and about the region. Earlier this week, Volumes 1 and [...]
Local rockers Purling Hiss celebrate the release of Water On Mars at Johnny Brenda's tonight. The new LP is the trio's major label debut (through Drag City) and presents the bristly lo-fi guitar rock of previous releases in a more polished, hi-fi resolution while retaining the amped up excess of feedback and noise. The Key ... Continue reading
Earlier this year I was a guest on the excellent IDC Radio program Tastemakers. We listened to music by the likes of Kick Up The Fire, Little People, Father John Misty, Absofacto, WhoMadeWho and Carolina Chocolate Drops as well as talking about wicked YouTube channels and must hear podcasts. You can find the entire track listing here. The post Cougar Microbes featured on Tastemakers radio show appeared first on Cougar Microbes .

40. Patrick Watson - Adventures in Your Own Backyard - Patrick Watson is gaining steam with lush orchestrated indie-rock / folk songs that seem to float and quiver over this excellent album that was remarkably recorded in the singer's apartment. There are vast sounds coming from every angle, and Watson uses his voice to fog over these orchestrations creating a huge sound that will delight you from every angle. Check out Into Giants, a very Simon & Garfunkel(y) sound as well as the title track that will spin your head. Listen: Patrick Watson - Into Giants [...]

myworldmusicfriends.com Last month, I found myself at Rhode Island's Rhythm and Roots Festival , a nice little three-stage music and camping event that hosts a variety of rootsy music from around the country. There was lots of great stuff to be seen, including a hot performance from The Duhks , featuring a full reunion of original members, including singer Jessee Havey and fiddler Tania Elizabeth. Also on the lineup were a slew of Cajun and Zydeco bands, a fun blues performance from [...]

This is what's making me happy today... Carolina Chocolate Drops, "Hit Em Up Style" - from the album Genuine Negro Jig Ann Powers over on NPR's All Songs Considered turned me on to this. And turned on is right. Jazzed up. Knocked out. Normally, in the past, this kind of roots music didn't appeal to me, but I think Gillian Welch kind of opened my eyes/ears to being more receptive to what I had dismissed as [...]

Carolina Chocolate Drops - Leaving Eden (Laurelyn Dossett Cover)

It's hard not to love the idea of a bluegrass festival with its own IPA, brewed and provided by Greenfield, MA locavore haven The People's Pint. Nor is it possible to ignore the appeal of hanging out among the grand exhibits and well-curated artspaces of MASS MoCA , one of my favorite museums, which has long held my deep respect for its role in revitalizing the mid-Massachusetts contemporary arts scene, and has recently become well known among the hipster set for hosting envelope-pushing performing arts of all types, including newly-localized band Wilco, lush lo-fi hipster heroes Handsome [...]
This group of musicians make beautiful music, and that is really all I can say about it. It takes me back to that good old stuff that I used to hear my great uncle and grandmother play and sing. Notes from YouTube: The Carolina Chocolate Drops perform "Leaving Eden" at Memorial Hall, UNC, Chapel Hill, NC, Feb. 3 2012. With Rhiannon Giddens, Dom Flemons, Leyla McCalla and Hubby Jenkins. Unfortunately you can't see or hear Dom very well in this recording but he is playing some really nice guitar. [...]

Rhett Miller cut his teeth with the alt-country Old 972s, but years before the band released Too Far To Care, the catchiest and most compelling distillation of its cow-punk-meets-Brit-Invasion template, Miller put out his own little-heard first solo album, Mythologies. Now 2,800 miles from Dallas, where he got his start, Miller is a family man [...]

Folk is one of those genres that doesn't get the love it should. It's understandable, really, most of us bloggers aren't baby boomers. And when we were doing our musical walking (as opposed to musical crawling), we were listening to rock or hip-hop or a subsidiary of those forms. So, it hardly seems relevant to report on what's happening to such a tried-and-true musical form that they play only at Starbucks, right? Wrong. The past two years have seen a plethora of new releases which challenge, [...]
