Photography by PriCipEssa Holy crap! It's Friday! Uh-huh-uh-huh! The sun is out, the roads are clear, I even got to ride my road bike... OUTSIDE! I know, crazy, right? Check out a quick mobile pic I took on the ride in, the last stretch: Oh sure, it was cold & there was a little black ice to avoid, but screw it. I needed to get back on my bike!!! Speaking of, oh I don't know, let's say, [...]

Holy shit. Listening to the new Carolina Chocolate Drops album and this song comes on and blows me away. Here's a live performance that is pretty damn close to the studio version. Just wow. Wow, wow, wow. Well, wow and hot.

I apologize for not posting anything yesterday, work is making it hard for me to keep my head above water this week. Thankfully today is Tuesday so I can gorge on new music - and there are a few great albums out today. I can't wait to dive into Gorilla Manor from Local Natives and Genuine Negro Jig (pictured above) from Carolina Chocolate Drops . Don't forget to check out the Chocolate Drops [...]
Here's the Carolina Chocolate Drops

Originally I had planned to put together a well thought-out mixtape every Friday. I thought it would be fun to cap off every week with a nice little collection of songs for your listening enjoyment over the weekend. Instead I've been putting together mixes at completely random times with weeks or months in between. I may want to be organized, but I'm never going to get there. Besides it's more fun to put together a good mix when the mood is right. I'm not sure exactly what that mood is, but I suppose I'm experiencing it right now. Here's the 5 Score [...]

During these hard economic times music lovers need free shows. There's just no getting around it. Sure there are plenty of shows I want to catch at The Pageant , but I have to pick and choose. That's why places like The Billiken Club are so great. You have the opportunity to experience national touring acts without having to offer up any of your hard-earned cash. I just ran across another chance to see a fantastic band for absolutely nothing. Every Friday night the [...]
Last year Dawes released North Hills that landed at #5 on our list of favorite albums of 2009. We're so excited to have them back in Wisconsin for two nights next month, ( 2/13 Madison, 2/14 Milwaukee ) co-headlining with Cory Chisel . Above, Dawes turns out a rousing cover of the Lennon/McCartney penned song that Joe Cocker gave life to, which the whole world came to know via the Wonder Years theme song. News: [...]

The mailbag is bursting with delight - so full, in fact, that I've decided that next week will be New Artists, Old Songs Week here at Cover Lay Down, featuring a whole host of new artists who have kindly sent along their demos, one-off tracks, and pre-releases in anticipation of greater recognition for the next generation. It is, as always, an honor to be able to share these folks with you; I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do, and pursue the links provided here to support their emerging talent. While we [...]

I'm reading a fascinating book called This Is Your Brain On Music by Daniel Levitin, a neuropsych guy who studies how the brain interacts with musical stimuli. The book goes pretty in depth into topics like why we like the music we like, how our brain reacts to certain types of music, and what – at the very core – makes up music. One passage, regarding the entity of a song, really caught my eye: "music is quite robust in the face of transformations and distortions of its basic features. We can change [...]

Inevitably, a love of coverage leads to a constant, ever-vigilant search for thoughtful, well-crafted reinterpretation. I spend hours each week mining full albums for the hidden cover song, and scanning MySpace and email inbox for the promotional, the one-off acoustic in-studio radio track, and the otherwise unreleased singleton, and the endless discovery is eminently worth the pursuit. But there's no question that tribute albums are the cover lover's bread and butter. I gather these things in like truffles, and hold a special place for them in my heart and in my [...]
Here are a few videos of performances at the WDVX Blue Plate Special. This is a live concert series that takes place every day at noon in down town Knoxville. Every day, people gather downtown to socialize, have lunch, and watch some live music. Did I mention that the shows are free to attend? We're in the middle of our Fall Fund Drive at WDVX. We are a listener supported radio station, and we rely heavily on listener donations to stay on the air. By making your tax deductible donation to WDVX [...]

I really hope some of you tuned in to the Blue Plate Special yesterday to hear Jill Andrews and The Carolina Chocolate Drops. Jill's new songs and band sounded amazing, and the Chocolate Drops had the crowd worked into quite a frenzy. Here's a video from the last time the Chocolate Drops appeared on the BPS. They'll be back in town Sunday night for a performance at the Bijou Theatre .

It's been most of a year since our beloved cat Jacob passed away, and although I still think of him sometimes when I pass the rock where we laid his body to rest, the memory of his heaviness on my shoulders, like the sound of his rattling purr, has lost its weight as it moved from heart to brain. As I wrote back in September when he first fell ill , Jacob was our first child, the first other life to which I committed myself wholly. To lose him was to [...]

For the last 3 years, the Smithsonian American Indian Museum has welcomed 29 musical groups from more than 15 Native communities to play summer concerts. I've missed previous shows, which fell on each 2nd and 4th Saturday throughout the summer, but I wouldn't miss two offerings this Saturday, August 22. Elaine Bomberry and Ron Welburn kick off [...]
