Last night's Dawes show was the first of two back-to-back appearances in Minneapolis that will also include a concert on New Year's Eve. Not even two months after their last blowout performance in the Twin Cities , this show at the Varsity Theater was, admittedly, anticlimactic. In the band's defense, it's hard to top a homecoming double-header with Blitzen Trapper, especially in a smaller venue playing with lesser-known local bands. It's possible they were saving their energy for the onset of 2012 (which, if they keep the same set list, should fall appropriately on "When My Time [...]

In case you missed it last Friday, here are some pictures from the set in the Hepburn Zoo. Shout out to all the bands that played: Caroline Smith & The Goodnight Sleeps, The Milkman's Union, and Middlebury's very own Alpenglow. It was a fantastic show filled to the brim with great folk music. Check [...]

Strange Matter is apparently the place to be the next two nights. First up, retro psychedelic pop outfit Unknown Mortal Orchestra will be performing Tuesday, Oct. 18 with Canary Oh Canary and Young Adult Fiction . If you haven't heard of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, check them out. They'd be right at home in Richmond's underground pop shoegaze rock scene. Very catchy stuff these guys are putting together. Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Jello and Juggernauts [...]

Off their new album Little Wind . This one's from their last NYC show at Union Pool, Brooklyn (boy, people talk a lot at that place!)

"The name of the band was formed around the concept of feeling completely inspired to take hold of life and be the best person you can be the next day before going to bed," says Greenhalgh, lead singer of Inspired and the Sleep (opposed to Caroline Smith & The Goodnight Sleeps ). The Sleep are an psychadelic pop/organic-electronic/upbeat rock trio out of Cali that grabbed my attention while I was surfing through my Hypem feed. Now to be honest, if a track catches my ear, I don't always have time to go through that artists SoundCloud library, but with [...]

I've been told by a few friends to keep my ears open for Caroline Smith & The Goodnight Sleeps , but I hadn't really listened until I came across this blues cover today (originally made popular by our good soul-soother/breaker, Ray Charles). It gives me all sorts of chills. Listen to her wail - I love it when musicians surprise me. Drown In My Own Tears live at Rock Shop, Brooklyn (Oct 11, 2011) Caroline's [...]

You know who's going to love this Ray Charles / Aretha Franklin cover? You. You're going to love it. From last night at Rock Shop, Brooklyn. They're playing 2 more NYC dates: today (Oct 12) at Cake Shop and tomorrow (Oct 13) at Union Pool.
Good to have some more local Minnesota talent, this time it's not even that hip-hop we always seem to be throwing your way. This time I am pleased to introduce Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps. This band, in my mind, comes out as a mix of Florence + the Machine and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's. In the featured song specifically, it's starts with Caroline's soft, sweet vocals and builds with strong

So many album releases this weekend...Cheers to new music!

Most recently, Caroline Smith and company have completed tracking a new full length at the Terrarium in Minneapolis with Jason Orris (Polara, Happy Apple, Haley Bonar) and the songs are currently being mixed with Tom Herbers (Low, Dark Dark Dark, Andrew Bird). Little Wind expands upon Backyard Tent Set's story-telling whimsy, but shifts its foundation from the simplicities of folk to greater nuances of musical arrangement and soundscape rooted in modern indie rock. Loyal to the heart of Smith's sound, Caroline's unforgettable and endearing pop melodies remain the proudest strength of the record. The record [...]

[LOCAL] *MP3: Caroline Smith & the Good Night Sleeps - "Calliope" Caroline Smith & the Good Night Sleeps will release their new album, Little Wind , on 9/20 via United Interests.

I'm beyond excited to finally be able to share this Caroline Smith & The Goodnight Sleeps track with you. The last track I shared was "Tanktop" which I liked, but her strongest trait, her voice, is obscured. Someone even left a comment saying they couldn't understand a word. But this one is different. "Calliope" has been a standout track, one worthy of obsession. Caroline Smith & The Goodnight Sleeps - Calliope The slow start lets you settle into the song [...]
I like to post mixes comprised of the songs that keep me company whenever I travel, however, the last few trips have gone mixless, sadly. So, this is a bit of a combination of a few different excursions, which I think flows nicely for an August day. Hope you like it and be sure to support the artists if you discover a new track you like. Beirut - "Santa Fe" Feist - "How Come You Never Go There" Cass Combs - "The Same Thing" [...]

Caroline Smith is the reason I started this blog. Well, not exactly. But people like her, with her spirit. Her (and her band's) kickstarter-funded , DIY album, Little Wind, is due out on September 20, and it's chock full of indie singer-songwriter gems. I loved just about every quirky, cute, sexy and darling song on this little record. Funny thing, though, is I can't figure out who submitted it...Seem to have lost the records. Well, whoever did, thank you! For fans of: Kate Nash, Thao and the Get Up Stay Down,Joanna Newsom, Feist. [...]

The catchy hooks remain, but their new sound destined to win the group a whole new set of fans, while pleasing the old ones Minneapolis' Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleep release their latest album Little Wind this coming September 20th. Tanktop - Caroline Smith and The Good Night Sleeps In 2006, at the ripe age of 18, singer/songwriter Caroline Smith planted herself in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Here, she was welcomed into the local music community and developed a following around her solo career. Upon meeting drummer Arlen Peiffer (of Cloud Cult ), bassist Jesse Schuster , and multi-instrumentalist David Earl in 2007, though, Caroline Smith and The Good Night Sleeps (@goodnightsleeps) came to fruition. The resulting sound is an enchanting soulful-folk with evident pop influences. [...]
