Song Shock of Pleasure ~ " Superstar " myspace plays: 2,250 download (via blouse. ) I don't usually post cover songs, especially when its a well known group like The Carpenters being covered, but this song caught me by surprise. The vocals are clean, the backing music is floaty, down-tempo, and layered, and it pays respect to the original without it sounding like a karaoke rendition. I'm looking forward to September, 16th when the Dallas [...]

Few acts in the history of pop music have been as beloved and as reviled as the brother and sister duo of Richard and Karen Carpenter. There was no denying the success of The Carpenters, who initially scored their first major hit in 1970 when they topped the charts with (They Long To Be) Close To You . During the next six years, the pair would sell millions of albums and place fifteen songs into the US Top 40, including eleven Top Ten hits. However, the popularity of The Carpenters began to fade in the mid-'70s as [...]
In September 1972 I started school, so I didn't know any of these albums at the time (in contrast to many of the hit singles of that year). Over time, music from all eras has accumulated in my collection, making it possible to compile top 10s for almost every year (though I would struggle to do so for some years in the '90s). For 1972, it could have been a top 20 of albums I genuinely love. I

Who: Carpenter from Vancouver. What: Give a listen to the tune Six Shots off the band's upcoming debut album, Law of The Land . Their music is heavily influenced by John Cougar Mellancamp , Bruce Springsteen , and is described as FarmCore. Made a name for themselves by vehemently promoting sustainable farming practices, playing Vancouver's Live Earth concert, and attracting the attention of Jack Daniels Distillery enough to be featured in a national ad campaign in the U.S. Carpenter will be [...]
It's pretty much impossible to write about Karen Carpenter without first mentioning her tragic, premature death from the effects of an eating disorder. It's the first thing most of us think about. But having acknowledged it, I'd like to now leave it behind because I'd much rather remember Karen Carpenter the singer. The Carpenters began as [...]
When she sang, the warmth of her voice surprised - and charmed - listeners. Disappointment in love — a relationship that ended, unrequited love, even a relationship that couldn't be — can turn to resentment. Love turning into hate can be a coping mechanism. It can be levelled at the ex- or putative partner, or at the whole notion of love in general. Such bitterness may be transient or it may abide, turning the brokenhearted into a fleeting wreck or into an enduring cynic

Song Gnarls Barkley ~ " Run " "Run" is a new song off their upcoming album "The Odd Couple" due out in April. Video The Carpenters ~ " Rainy Days and Mondays " Karen Carpenter died 25 years ago today due to health problems resulting from anorexia. Also, its been raining lately and its also Monday... Other: [...]

Today marks the 25th anniversary of KAREN CARPENTER 's death by heart failure at the age of 32. The heart failure, of course, was the consequence of her long struggle with anorexia nervosa. Much like Rock Hudson would come to symbolize (and humanize) AIDS just a few years later, Carpenter would provide a face (and a voice) for a disease that was then little-known and little-understood by the population at large. There can be no doubt that this "fatal flaw" contributes significantly to her legacy today. [...]

The annual Zeon's Christmas mix has finally seen the day, just in time. An hour and 15 mins of festive tunes. Delivered in 128kbps mp3s. With a thematically minimal cover. Also nicely wrapped in a zipped file for your convenience. So get those fingers working! Although the last thing you should do on Christmas Eve is to spend your precious time sitting at the computer to download some mp3s from a faceless blogger. Hope all is having a wonderful time with family & friends, with plenty of reasons to celebrate. There's something for everyone here, and some gems I've been [...]

There is always a time and place when this will be the perfect record to put on. Many could use a little Carpenters in their collection, and this hit-studded near-concept album is their best work. You have to let down your guard and forget what you know about this group; they sound a little slick, sure, but they perform good honest songs, aren't afraid of a little humor, and that voice... My god, Karen Carpenter slays them all. American Idol losers and winners alike have never approached this type of talent, and I always think of Karen, somehow, [...]

Nine Inch Nails - Closer The Carpenters - [...]

...because tonight is the annual Athens Christmas Parade . Second only to Athens' Double-Barreled Cannon , the Christmas parade is my favorite thing about Athens (well, in the non-music world, that is.) Last year my favorite things in the parade were a garbage truck (with a poster board on the side that said "Merry Christmas") courtesy of the Athens Solid Waste Department and a 3-legged dog . The marching bands from the local high schools are always [...]
English Version: I always enjoy a Tarantino OST. Without a doubt there's always a song that I didn't know (usually a classic) or I finish discovering a new band. My last experience was with Death Proof OST with the song Baby It's You . Oh man, that track is stuck in my mind since the release of the cd and yep I didn't know that track until that moment. So, a little bit of research cough*wikipedia*cough I found that it was written by Burt Bacharach (music), Barney Williams and Mack David (lyrics), at the beginning [...]
Purgatory by Maxine Kumin And suppose the darlings get to Mantua, suppose they cheat the crypt, what next? Begin with him, unshaven. Though not, I grant you, a displeasing cockerel, there's egg yolk on his chin. His seedy robe's aflap, he's got the rheum. Poor dear, the cooking lard has smoked her eyes. Another Montague is in the womb although the first babe's bottom's not yet dry. She scrolls a weekly letter to her Nurse who dares to send a smock through Balthasar, and [...]

Ah, this week's Contrast Podcast is going to be a real treat, I can feel it in my bones. After months of cajoling by her admirers, Liz from The Roaring Machine has joined the CP posse with a cracking theme. The challenge she set was to come up with a cover version that outshines the original song it treats, and our contributors have risen to the task in splendid fashion. I have a story to tell you about my choice, so let me husband my words: download the 'cast here , or plug [...]
