Sometimes seeing someone live is all it takes. I saw Carrie Elkin play a stirring set over SXSW this past week and it turned me into a convert for her new record Call It My Garden . Carrie's been know as a woman with a huge vocal range and a pedal to the metal singer. But there is a real nuance to the bulk of the performances on the new Red House record. During her live set I fell for her intimate songs "Berlin" and "Lift Up The Anchor". But I'm going [...]

Carrie Elkin has called a number of places home, from Colorado and Taos to New England, but when she settled in Austin, TX in 2007 she -- and her roots/folk music -- seemed to have found the ideal environment. She had released three solid album since her '96 debut, but it was '07's The Jeopardy of Circumstance produced by Colin Brooks of Austin's The Band of Heathens that broke her through to a larger audience internationally and earned her rave reviews. Elkin's intelligent, unpretentious writing and smoky vocals combined with Brooks' wide-open Americana sound was a potent [...]

There's a long tradition of singer-songwriter couples in folk music, especially in those pockets of history where you find movements and schools forming. From June Carter and Johnny Cash in the second-generation countryfolk days, Buddy and Julie Miller at the forefront of the modern Americana movement, and Jeffrey Foucault and Kris Delmhorst's marriage in the wake of their work with folk supergroup Redbird, to the doomed-but-productive pairings of James Taylor and Carly Simon in the singer-songwriter seventies and Maria and Geoff Muldaur in the Greenwich Village and Woodstock jugband era, not to mention the quirky songs of the [...]
On Tour Together ! Yes. Have you really, really, really read the title of this post ? So what else to expect from me ? First, some excuses : I'm really late posting about two of the most talented songwriters (yes I really measure these words) who are touring for some months now ! Then, few more buckets of apologies - last time - for being so short writing about this performance : only couple dates left in december. Check the schedule below, and jump to the artists sites for further details. 12/7 Sun Philadelphia, [...]

I met Carrie Elkin down at SXSW, she's a friend of Danny Schmidt and often performs with him. That's about all the recommendation you or I should need. She's got a great big voice which is kind of shocking coming from this pixie-like woman. Carrie's releasing her new album, The Jeopardy of Circumstance , this month. You can buy the new record here .
