Though we don't get this fantastic show on Iowa Public Radio, Acoustic Cafe is an independently-produced 2-hour radio show hosted by Rob Reinhart focusing on a wide variety of music, but tending to center on the "unplugged" side of things. Acoustic Cafe also sponsors a tour, and for some of the dates on their evening tour Pieta Brown is joining the 2nd half of the run replacing Erin McKeown in the lineup with also includes Carrie Rodriguez (who Pieta toured with in 2011) and Kelly Joe Phelps . This is the [...]

This is a great song off the new album from Austin based singer-songwriter Graham Weber . Graham is a favorite of much more well know Austin singer-songwriters (including Slaid Cleaves who took him under his wing and also recorded one of his songs). In his short time in Austin he's gone from being the opener to being a headliner (I saw him MC a show at the cactus cafe at SXSW one year). His new record is called Women . I guess it's in part a celebration and also a condemnation of that word. [...]

Singer-songwriter Carrie Rodriguez is no stranger to collaborations having released a number of fine albums with long time friend Chip 'Wild Thing' Taylor, this time around she's teamed up with Ben Kyle of Romantica for an album of 'country' duets, the album We Still Love Our Country , is set for a Oct 3rd release in the UK. The eight track release checks in at a little under half-an-hour and is a mixture of both artists songs and cover including If I Needed You by the late great Townes Van Zandt and the Gram & Emmylou classic [...]

Since I missed last weeks pick of the week feature due to the Super Bowl, I am including those tracks here, so it's definitely packed this week. You'll notice the first track is an Atmosphere track. They have just announced a new album release date as well as an extended tour , so definitely give those links a look as they are always pumping out quality tunes. Minnesota Nice- Atmosphere (ft. Ben Kyle may be familiar to music fans as the lead singer of Romantica , but his most recent material is a duets album with singer/songwriter Carrie Rodriguez. We Still Love Our Country is an 8 song album consisting of 6 cover songs and 2 originals. As the title implies, the songs are country themed, and definitely show an appreciation of the genre by the two singers. Whether it's a cover of " Love Hurts " (which aims to honor the Parsons/Harris version ), or John Prine's " Unwed Fathers ", you can feel [...]
Last year, Austin singer/songwriter and fiddler extraordinaire Carrie Rodriguez partnered with the frontman for Minneapolis' Americana band Romantica Ben Kyle to create the eight-track mini-album We Still Love Our Country , arriving February 1 on Ninth St. Opus. Of course when the pair refer to "country", they're not referring to the tepid Nashville brand of slick and maudlin twang-pop. No surprise that six of the project's eight songs are covers from the likes of alt-country pioneers the likes of Townes van Zant, John Prine and longtime Rodriguez mentor Chip Taylor. The duo also make a [...]
A retrospective with a handful of new tracks from an unlikely yet superlative pairing
Americana singer/songwriter Carrie Rodriguez has teamed up with Ben Kyle of Romantica for a new album. The album of duets, We Still Love Our Country, is set for a February 1st release. Alongside a number of originals are a bunch of covers, including songs from Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, and the "Love Hurts", made famous by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. This should be a great one. Carrie

You would think I'd have learned by now that making assumptions without further investigation can keep one from experiencing the sweeter things in life. Another example of my musical myopia can be found in the person of Carrie Rodriguez. When her new disc, Love & Circumstance, showed up in the mailbox, ...

Thanks to her first two albums Carrie Rodriguez established herself as a country star on the rise. On April 13th she returns with a new collection of songs aptly titled Love and Circumstance. The first thing that strikes you about a Carrie Rodriguez record is her voice. With an appropriate level of twang, she can be alternately tender and forceful. Her duets on "Wide River To Cross" and "

I've been sitting on Carrie Rodriguez' upcoming cover album Love & Circumstance for a month and loving every minute of it, so I'm especially happy to report that her take on John Hiatt, Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder, & Jim Keltner's Big Love has finally hit the streets running - and like the album itself, it's a gorgeous slice of Popfolk Americana, sweet and sultry, thick with ringing guitars, subtle on the strings yet big in all the right ways. We've been fans of Carrie ever since I caught her [...]

Albums of cover songs are curious things. An artist can often reveal more in the choice and interpretation of someone else's song than in an original composition -- a fact that comes to light in brilliant effect with Love and Circumstance , the new album arriving April 6 from Carrie Rodriguez . We've been fans of Ms. Rodriguez' own special take on alt-country/Americana for years now, from her earliest work with the legendary Chip Taylor to her most recent 2008 Malcolm Burn-produced album She Ain't Me . An accomplished musician -- the fiddle is her forte -- [...]

The mailbag is bursting with delight - so full, in fact, that I've decided that next week will be New Artists, Old Songs Week here at Cover Lay Down, featuring a whole host of new artists who have kindly sent along their demos, one-off tracks, and pre-releases in anticipation of greater recognition for the next generation. It is, as always, an honor to be able to share these folks with you; I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do, and pursue the links provided here to support their emerging talent. While we [...]
