Thursday, March 24, 2011 This was the year I finally did SXSW right. I went to shows for seven straight days without totally wearing myself out or getting sick. I had a blast despite the festival being way too crowded (it had an estimated 40% increase in attendance). My only regret was not seeing Wild Flag. HUGE mistake. Oh well. Next year I'll be sure to bring my bike every day. Then I won't miss a great show at Waterloo Records because I'm stuck down on Red River. Ugh! I'll [...]

Citizen Cope , the musical persona of groove-meister Clarence Greenwood, is nearing the end of a long national tour behind his first album in four years, "The RainWater LP." Tonight's date is at the Wiltern. ... Straight outta mainland China, P.K. 14 and Carsick Cars rock the Viper Room — the latter's set earlier this week at the Echo was good, noisy fun. ... Ex-Beulah frontman Miles Kurosky plays the Echo, while ex-Shudder to Think frontman Craig Wedren plays the Bootleg Theater. ... And electro-pop phenom Owl City plays to [...]
( Flickr ) South By Southwest / Austin, Texas / March 15-22, 2010 ( Flickr ) Took me a little bit longer than I would've liked but I finally went trough all the pix I took at SXSW and here's what I believe to be the best ones in the bunch. The list of artists/bands I was fortunate enough [...]
![[SXSW] Awesome Discoveries! Weekend, Carsick Cars, and Zorch](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2444678_lg.jpg)
What is probably the most important facet sof South By Southwest for both musicians and writers is the notion of discovery, whether its intentional or accidental. Below are three bands that I simply stumbled upon by happenstance, and I was better for it. On Thursday, I discovered the power and the glory of the tundra known as "east of I-35." Smaller parties, less claustrophobia, just as much talent - I had a blast that afternoon, and got to meet up with Get Off the Coast as well. The Sensitive Homeboys (Weekly Tape Deck, Transparent, Yours Truly, Underwater Peoples, [...]
Most-heard question last week: "So how was your South by Southwest?" Me: "Kind of a blur ... I think ... I mean ..." My assignments for SPIN.com kept me beyond busy, so the week was a parade of bands, sleep deprivation and more bands, and I didn't get to catch a lot of the buzzy ones I'd been hearing so much about. (Best coverage I wish I'd had: Dave Rawkblog .) But I had some memorable moments — once I regained my memory, of course: ☛ Shadow Shadow Shade's [...]

My assignments for SPIN.com on the final day of SXSW took me all over the map — not just the Austin street map, but the stylistic map. With temperatures around 40 and an uppity north wind chafing anything that wasn't covered, it was a tough day for outdoor shows. Yes, I was the guy wearing the promo beer cozies as gloves: ☛ The Boxer Rebellion breathed fresh life into Brit-rock. ☛ Karen Elson , the wife of the White Stripes' Jack White, played a chilly outdoors [...]

IODA/LimeWire Store's Opening Day Bash held at Emo's Annex kicked off promptly at noon with a tender, heartfelt set from Les Shelleys , a wonderful duo consisting of Los Angeles-based singer/songwriters Tom Brosseau and Angela Correa. Philadelphia's A Sunny Day In Glasgow were up next and tore through a shimmering set of glistening indie-pop. If this were 1985, this band would be signed to 4AD and touring with Lush or Cocteau Twins. Featuring members of ex-Broken Social Scene-ster Jason Collett's backing band, Canada's Zeus strutted their stuff, playing Americana-drenched songs from their terrific Say [...]

There was an interesting array of passengers on the 32-minute flight last night from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Austin. Two rows in front of me was a band of long-hairded dudes who all looked like Frank Zappa. To my left was a girl who spoke with a thick Cockney accent ("Hold your fookin' tounge!" she told her friend as she edited a track on her pink laptop) who was probably a DJ. Behind me, an older, professor-looking Texan struck up a conversation with a middle-aged recording studio owner from Oxford, England who was heading to South by Southwest to "get back [...]

So, as of this here post no mysterious benefactor has emerged to finance a last minute jaunt down to Austin. Hence, I am not going to SXSW . I already went through Part 1 of the Unofficial SXSW 2010 Showcasing Artists torrent , you can see the results of that... here . Here is a selection of mp3s from bands featured in Part 2 . This time I was able to whittle down the list to 28 songs. Some of these tracks will probably be familiar to you, while others not so much. Listen. [...]
Local radio DJ Danny Sigelman catches us up on a few great bands he's discovered while living abroad in China.

Demain, dimanche 7 mars, y a émission!

Today was new music discovery Wednesday for HappyParts. It was on my planner to learn about the indie music world in China. Following the long-tail, and knowing there are indeed authentic concerns for Chinese Youth to rebel against, the music must be on fire. I discovered a tour thats in mid-flight back east. (Ironically, not lots of coverage from jetset outposts - beyond Brooklyn Vegan - godspeed 4 the Mp3's) The tour is being presented by one of two, indies from Beijing, Maybe Mars . (What is the other label? Do Tell.) Maybe Mars also operates a club in Bejing called D-22 . Their artists cite influences [...]

Primavera es en el aire, spring is in the air. In Spain, anyway. Considering the pilgrimage to Coachella was a bit unmanageable this year, my summer concert festival will be Barcelona's Primavera Sound 2009. The three-day tunesfest takes place may 28 to 30 (next week) and features a indie-packed international crew that will make your head spin. There are few names on the playbill that we haven't yet spun here at Ca Va Cool, (as well as some old classics) so I thought I would do the honours and throw the records in the jukebox for all to hear. And, [...]
