I won't judge you if you haven't already bought Cashier No. 9 's debut album released last year, called 'The Death of Fun'. I will however give you a stern eye and direct you to listen and download the title track, offered up as a freebie by the kind folks of their label, Bella Union. Grab it below. Cashier No. 9 play on the Sunday of this year's Camden Crawl, taking place this weekend.

I'd be a lot more inclined to be patriotically English if all our national traditions weren't as fucking lame as prancing about the Maypole and nonsense like that. Actually, that's a lie. I'm not English enough to be patriotically English, and patriotism gives me the fucking creeps anyway, in all its guises. Not that this has anything to do with the unavoidable fact that the Maypole is still just a little bit silly, of course. We aren't really getting the Spring weather up here in Scotland, although it's been threatening it here and there. Still, it [...]

Only at SXSW can you manage to travel to multiple countries in a span of a couple hours. Well, not literally of course, but it is possible to see bands from many different corners of the globe in one afternoon. I achieved this in just hours on the club-filled Sixth Street, followed swiftly by the Discovering Scotland showcase at Latitude 30. Sixth Street is every bit as legendary as the tourist trap t-shirts that advertise its amazingness. Everywhere you turn, you will either run into a band hanging out, playing [...]

Sometimes, even in the competitive world of music blogging, an editor needs to take time out for herself. One of the SXSW showcases I was most looking forward to hunkering myself down at was the Northern Irish showcase being put on at the Tap Room at Six on Wednesday night. Oddly, the line-up was pretty much the same at British Music Embassy's Monday night show at Latitude 30, so had I arrived a day earlier, I could have caught that bill instead, but I suppose it was just my good luck [...]

Here's the list of Irish bands making their way to Austin, Texas for an amazing opportunity to gain fans and friends! Wednesday 14th March Central Presbyterian Church<!-- Central Presbyterian Church --> Foy Vance Belfast UK-N. IRELAND 10:00PM -10:40PM [...]
Posted in General Clickable Get Your Gig On Something For The Weekend A couple of reasons for this Sunday Supplement posting. Firstly it's wicked! I've been listening to it, in all it's wistful wonder, lot's over the last while. Secondly, I wanted to post an Irish band as we kick off the 6 Nations today against the land of sheep and dirt, aka Wales! Cashier No.9 are [...]
Belfast's Cashier No. 9 recently made an appearance at quite possibly the calendar year's first emerging music festival, Eurosonic Noorderslag held in Groningen, the Netherlands. Their performance of 'Goldstar' was filmed and you can watch it in all its glory below. The band will be appearing at Austin's SXSW in March and I've got plans to catch them as many times as I can. Now in its third year, First Fortnight doesn't need us to tell you how well thought out it is. Of all the oft-forgotten yet important social taboos to target, mental health is clearly still more essential during an economic near-apocalypse. Setting up in early January, a time that's notoriously gig deficient, was a stroke of genius, and the pricing policy – either five or ten Euro for line ups that would normally cost substantially more – feels just a little like a late Christmas present. Tonight, the last night of the festival, feels exactly like a [...]

Swear I'm Not Paul's Top 30 Irish Albums of 2011.
![EuroSonic: A Preview [Part Two]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3979648_lg.jpg)
Eurosonic Noorderslag is Europe's main conference and showcase festival for European music. With 180 European acts performing in more than 20 venues and over 3,000 music professionals from all over Europe attending and it's this week! In association with http://musicfromireland.org/ there are 21 Irish acts performing at EuroSonic over the next three days! In part one I discussed the fortunes of the bands playing tonight and on Thursday. Here I discuss [...]

I waited till 2011 to finalize my albums list - all my lists - partially due to laziness, being busy, the holidays... but mainly because I'm not sure what the hurry is. I don't do this for the web traffic (clearly), so I gave myself a little more time to decide than usual. (And as long as this goes up before the Village Voice' s Pazz n' Jop, I don't feel delinquent.) So here's my list, the top five or so have been a lock for almost half a year, but the rest were in flux right till I [...]

Here we are. The end of the sixth year of the Nialler9 poll. Thank you all once again for voting. We had about 100 or so votes that made up the results in songs , new artists, EPs and now, the big one - albums. Our ultimate winner has topped the poll before that doesn't negate the indisputable fact that there's plenty of superb Irish music contained within this list... 25. The Ambience Affair - Burials 24. LaFaro - Easy Meat [...]

Scottish Kate is a great friend of this blog and has often offered her (sometimes pithy) opinions on the world of music - and very good taste she has too. She also runs the always excellent (sometimes pithy), and often provocative blog A Burdz Eye View for all things Scottish (of course), political and musical. Here are her aural selections for 2011. The Burd's Best Songs of 2011 Well it doesn't get any easier. Though given that all my old schticks are in here aplenty [...]
Was it another classic year in music in 2011? Does it matter? We still got to hear so much great music. Irish bands are coming on in leaps and bounds, and are mostly exceedingly generous with their music, with much of it available for free. Further afield, 2011 saw the [Read more]
Up and coming Northern Irish rockers Cashier No. 9 made it to the #7 spot on our 10 for 2012 poll voted by you. Danny Todd, lead singer of the Belfast band, was kind enough to send over his answers to some burning questions we posed him and his band, such as what they expect to find in their dressing rooms on tour... Congratulations on finishing #7 in our 10 of 2012 poll of bands to watch next year. Unfortunately, we don't have a trophy or anything to [...]

There is no use ignoring the music coming out of Northern Ireland right now. First there was Two Door Cinema Club , making a big noise last year and now headlining the upcoming NME Awards tour next February. So what's going on now? Here comes the rampaging approach of two potentially heavy hitters: Cashier No. 9 , earmarked by Simon Raymonde's Bella Union and Two Door's 'little brothers' Kowalski. (I put 'little brothers' in quotes because there is a brother connection between the two bands [...]
In the last couple weeks, we asked you to vote for the top 10 artists you thought would be big in 2012. Coming in at #7 is an entry from the very strong as of late Northern Irish music scene... The Belfast lads that make up Cashier No. 9 have had a good couple of years, playing with the likes of Snow Patrol , Bell X1 and Editors. Danny Todd (guitar, vocals), James Smith (guitar, vocals), Stuart Magowan (bass, vocals), Philip Duffy (drums) and Ronan Quinn (keys, [...]
It's widely accepted that 2010 was a classic year for Irish bands, one that was always going to be difficult to reciprocate. Last year, the Point of Everything did a Best Songs of 2010 list that featured a measly six Irish bands. Looking back, so many more Irish bands deserved [Read more]
The one thing I don't do on the blog enough is to discuss the videos that can accompany a song or single from our wonderful artists. In the week when the MTV awards came to Belfast and went with only Gaga's outfit and Beiber's spunkiness the topic of trends here's the best new videos from Irish bands! [Tipping my cap to Nay at Harmless Noise who writes so eloquently about music videos and where I discover the best videos!] ----------------------- Rams Pocket Radio - Dieter Rams Has Got The [...]
