I'd like to wish you all a quick happy new year, as I enjoy some final moments of rest before work and attempt to get caught up behind the scenes (see: answer emails..snack, repeat). I managed to hit up a few parties last night (by bike!) and checked out some amazing bands like Chairs Missing and Cuckoo Chaos in a living room next to a few hundred kids spilling out into the backyard, where we then roasted some smores over a giant bonfire among more strangers than friends. Here's to New Years' Kisses: [...]

Happy New Year! Hooray it's finally 2011 and I'm ready for a fresh start. Thanks to everyone--musicians, readers, and friends--that made 2010 a wonderful and exciting year, now let's make this year better. I made you all this little mixtape to rest your weary hungover head on. I definitely have the best version of Auld Lang Syne by Lake Huron which just debuted this morning. I tried pretty hard to make it a positive mix but that's just not the most realistic thing so there are a few little songs filled with doubt that snuck their way in there. How [...]

Wishing all of my readers a happy and healthy new year, one that's hopefully better than the economic and political disaster of 2010. Vague Space will return to a regular posting schedule next week that will include updates on all the great new music coming out at the start of 2011, including new albums by The Decemberists, Asobi Seksu, Destroyer, Bright Eyes, and The Rural Alberta Advantage. It's Christmas Day, we have had our breakfast of smoked salmon and poached eggs, and I decided I might as well settle down with a bottle of fizz and talk shite on the internet. Given we opened all our presents and had a big meal when my parents were visiting last week, I figured I was obliged to do no more than get pissed and slowly waste away the day today, stopping only to gorge myself on roast lamb and some indeterminate point in the evening - whenever Mrs. Toad gets over last night's hangover I suppose. I [...]

Well, wouldn't you know it? It's already that time of year again.... That time of year when little kids all over Amorica start wanting a bunch of crap you couldn't afford the other 11 months. The time of year when you are suddenly compelled to buy that person who you don't know at work some crap "but keep it under $20!"... The time of year when you got to give your boss, who makes, lets say, at least 2 or 3 or 5 times as much as you, a gift. The time of year when you can [...]

Í dag er það einsmannssveitin Casiotone For The Painfully Alone sem stekkur fram úr jóladagatali Rjómans. Owen Ashworth hefur starfrækt sveitina í 13 ár og gefið út helling af stórskemmtilegum plötum. Hann lagði því miður Casiotone For The Painfully Alone nafninu nú fyrr í desember, en ku þó ætla að halda áfram tónlistariðkun. Jólin hafa verið Ashworth hugleikin nokkrum sinnum og því eru það tvö jólalög úr fórum hans sem við skulum hlusta á í dag. Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - Cold White Christmas Casiotone For The [...]

I've had so much fun compiling list this week that I decided to do it again except with Christmas/Holiday songs. I could go out and find my favorites and then share them individually, but this way all the songs and playlist are in one little post, like a wrapped up package for you. Like I've said before, I hate the incessant playing of christmas carols for a month straight on the radio, or walking down the street, or when waiting in line for a coffee, it drives me crazy. The 98% of the songs are auto tuned crap that make [...]

Tweet It starts and ends here in San Francisco for Casiotone for the Painfully Alone , the musical diary of Owen Ashworth which closed its covers this Sunday evening at Bottom of the Hill. What started as a simpler venture into electronic pop and nostalgic imagery, the early songs referencing San Francisco's beloved bars and transit systems, matured and moved as Owen did geographically. Though he's resided in Chicago for some years now, Ashworth concluded the project where it started on its thirteenth anniversary (first show ever [...]

Looks like I'll be drinking Christmas dinner alone again this year. These songs are for the those of us who think that Christmas is the saddest, loneliest, most depressing time of year. This mix will make you cry. Consider yourself warned. Zippo! 1. Elvis Presley - Blue Christmas.mp3 Buy : It's Christmas Time (2000, orig. 1957) Gotta start off with a classic. 2. [...]

Welcome to the Annual Vague Space Indie/Alternative Christmas Music Spectacular (TM). I was able to set aside my great urge to say "bah humbug" to this whole season this year and to get into the mood long enough for this post, so hopefully this will get you in the spirit if you are like me and saw Christmas lights glowing in your neighborhood the day after Thanksgiving and said "Are you fucking kidding me? Already?" Anyway, merry happy or something. Enjoy. Download Bishop Allen - "You'll Never Find My [...]

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone , musical project of Owen Ashworth, announced their farewell tour with San Diego band- Donkeys, which kicks off this Friday at Soda Bar. I'm so excited I'll get a chance to see them for the last time, and wish that this tour is encouraging enough for them to stick around a little while longer. See you this Friday. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone- New Year's Kiss

Tweet Live This Month: December 2010 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #239) In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Although things get a little quiet around Christmas, December's got plenty of concert highlights. For some, like Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, this month's show marks the end of a long run, while others, like Sic Alps and [...]

Cotes du Rhone is our default red wine of choice in this house, and after yesterday's birthday celebrations being cut rather short due to my feeling shitty, we are having a quiet evening in with a couple of bottles of red wine, a bacony, beany stew and we are going to light the fire for the first time this Winter as well. There is nothing remotely related to that on this podcast of course, but then these titles have become increasingly unrelated to the actual podcasts themselves recently so I doubt that'll surprise anyone. In fact, [...]
Before seeing the band perform for the last time ever at Sneaky Pete's last week, I had the chance to sit down for a chat with Owen Ashworth from Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. This is his last tour as Casiotone, but this is not for the purposes of retiring from music, more so that he can put to bed a project which has dominated the last thirteen years of his life and start work on new projects with relative freedom. It was interesting listening to him talk about it, because for all he repeated the reasons he's [...]
I know, we've been quiet. Very quiet. It's not because we don't love you, we've just been extremely busy with the move/Eliza's (she says hi , btw) been looking for a job etc. We've also had something of a mid-life crisis re our blog, wondering what the point is if everyone and their uncle is writing about music these days. It's kind of hard to see what you can add to that. We still haven't quite reached a conclusion on that... In the meantime, I've been taking rather a lot of pictures of my new [...]

There must be something thoroughly depressing about growing old whilst the songs you created remain eerily unaged, a snapshot of your youth played out every night on your yearly tour. There's always been a lot of personality and humour packed in Owen Ashworth's works, which is precisely why there's been such a swell of appreciation for his output as Casiotone for the Painfully Alone . Letting go is always hard, but Ashworth has done it so brilliantly throughout his thirteen years under the moniker. Perhaps that's the reason why fans reacted so amicably to his decision to [...]

After a weekend of alcoholic liver-punching with the awful cunts from Gerry Loves Records I find myself back in Edinburgh with Mrs. Toad off in Australia and nothing between me and an entire week spent on the internet in my pants with a jar of pickled onions and a jumbo packet of pork scratchings. In fact, that sounds like a pretty good plan, all told. Balls to dignity, self-respect and hygiene. Wednesday 10th November 2010: Casiotone for the Painfully Alone & My Tiny Robots at Sneaky Pete's .
