Cass McCombs - Twins This is a very John Lennon-esque tune about gut-wrenching deception and the recriminations that fly when two people realise they really shouldn't be together ("You lied to me and I to you, I guess we deserve each other, though I'm damned if we do"). Poignant, soulful and gently despairing...all for a b-side track recorded in London! MySpace Buy Photo by His Noodly Appendage, licensed under Creative Commons [...]

Papercuts - Future Primitive It's been two years since we heard from Papercuts' Jason Robert Quever, when Can't Go Back emerged from under the wings of Andy Cabic and Devendra Banhart's label Gnomosong. Since then, Quever has working with Beach House, Cass McCombs and Vetiver. But this track, from the forthcoming You Can Have What You Want , sounds like a refreshing step forward for Papercuts, the r'n'b bass line and mumbled melody suggesting that something from his time with the aforementioned bands has rubbed off. The process of discovering artists can often turn into a domino effect, where reading into the origins of one artist leads to the discovery of another. This fortunate scenario is one of the reasons why I attempt to be so factually evident in writing about these artists, as it not only benefits the reader but also myself since I stumble upon so many affiliated acts in researching an artist's origins. Often out of curiosity, I look into other releases that a featured artist has participated in. This proves especially useful if they are preparing their first release, as there is [...]
John playing guitar during Deerhoof's appearance on Pancake Mountain If it's Christmas at You Ain't No Picasso, that means it's Mixmas! These twelve days give me a chance to turn You Ain't No Picasso over to the musicians I cover and allow them to showcase some of their favorite songs through a themed mix. And if [...]

If nothing else, Cass McCombs' Heineken Green Synergy gig in Whelan's proved that the founding principle of every band is very simple. The secret is, as Lou Reed has maintained for at least 30 years, guitar, bass and drums. Following a storming set from Conor O'Brien's new five-piece band, Villagers , Cass and bassist Walter opened their set with a rehearsal of the guitar and bass parts for a new untitled tune before being joined by their drummer and surging gently into an untitled melody, vaguely reminiscent of a host of surfer bands. The [...]

Gig Of The Week: Genghis Tron, Behold The Arctopus, Rolo Tomassi , The Network - The Underworld Prepare for supreme noise making at Underworld on Saturday as Americans Genghis Tron follow up their European stint with The Faint with a short UK tour. Backed by a multi-talented string of bands, not least Sheffield stars Rolo Tomassi (for the London show only), the potential of this night is stellar. This amazing line up is unbelievably not sold out - and under a tenner face value! Tickets: See [...]
Between the sparse crowd, awkward between song patter, blinding stage lighting somehow Cass McCombs conspired to being close to inspired last night in Whelan's. The challenge had been put to him by the undercard from Dublin called Villagers. Only caught the final part of their set but it was highly promising stuff, a galley of players each putting distinguished performances in on some really

The folk-genre has seen a strong resurgence in the past several years. The leaders and visionaries of the current movement are Sam Beam [Iron and Wine], Ray LaMontagne, Devendra Banhart, Jose Gonzalez, Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Damien Rice. A second tier of promising artists are Patrick Watson , Bon Iver , Cass McCombs , Fionn Regan, J. Tillman , A.A. Bondy , and Damien Jurado . Add British singer-songwriter Pete Greenwood to the list of rising stars. His debut album Sirens is stunning, especially for a guy [...]
Cass McCombs has been popping into this blog more than most artists so it's safe to assume we are fans. Born in Concord his wandering nature has seen him taking up residency in several cities throughout the U.S. He is currently based in L.A. where his 3rd LP 'Dropping The Writ' was recorded. McCombs has yet to make a definitive record but along the way he has dreamed up several genuine classics.

Because... Genusfrog and myself are taking a week's break from shooting a film. It's nothing to do with scheduling, actually; it's mainly because we ran out of bullets. I mean, heck, anyone knows that shooting films requires a six-barreled shotgun, eight tanks and 5,000 AK-47s. at the very least. You didn't know that? You putz. Go to film school. Cass McCombs - Pregnant Pause (from Dropping the Writ ) If you own a stable, its best to evict your prized mare and make room for this nestling, plaintively picked [...]

Cass McCombs was just so perfect for Halfway to Forecastle. Headliner's looked great and was decked out with four video projections and boatloads of decorations. In compliment, Cass McCombs' set was hauntingly beautiful. MP3: Cass McCombs - Equinox

Above pic via Zara This turned out to be one of my favorite mixtapes that we've done so far, there's some pretty great choices in this bunch. As the title of the post says this month's mixtape is all about (in Karim's words) "chilling, relaxing, and chillaxing." I'd throw another word in here but Nghia would yell at me. [MP3]: Sigur Ros "Staralfur" [James] [...]
