Last Friday night I went to the Cass McCombs concert in Denver. I got in my little car and I trekked out into the snowstorm, slowly making my way to Hi-Dive after the venue's website announced the band made it safely into Denver and the show was on. The snowflakes danced around the street lights, making Denver a real life snowglobe and a winter wonderland. It was equal parts beautiful and dangerous. The roads were snow-packed, the fools in giant SUVs believing their car's 4×4 deemed them invincible. Yet, all you really noticed were the flakes piling on [...]

). O álbum tributo The Songs of Leonard Cohen Covered reuniu artistas como The Low Anthem , Cass [...]

Plus Palace Songs, Cass McCombs, Father John Misty, and others.

So in addition to Vimeo's still ongoing “Old Ideas With New Friends” series , which has already seen Bradford Cox , Cold War Kids , Cults , and The Afghan Whig’s Greg Dulli  cover tracks from the great Leonard Cohen, there's also a covers album of Cohen's 1967 debut that comes included in the new issue of MOJO  magazine. Contributing artists included Bill Callahan, Cass McCombs, The Low Anthem, Field Music, and ex-Fleet Fox'er Father John Misty , as well as Marc Ribot and My Brighest Diamond, who teamed up for a bonus track version of "Bird on [...]

The line-up for this years Sasquatch Festival came out on Thursday night and it is a pretty decent looking list.  Even though there is roughly  a -12% chance that I will be able to attend this year, I thought it would be kind to preview some songs from artists that I would be excited to go see.  This is just a small sampling so head over to The Official Site for more info about bands playing and how to get tickets.  Enjoy! Photo credit: Time Out New York  ( Loren Wohl ) With the exception of shimmering lights emanating from the back of the stage, the Bowery Ballroom was completely dark for singer-songwriter Cass McCombs’ set on Wednesday night. The sold out crowd packed in the venue, even tighter than sardines, and was held in rapt attention throughout the show. The evening started off on an impossibly high note with opener Frank Fairfield . Sitting on the stage with only a microphone and [...]

Cass McCombs put out two exceptional albums last year, the somber Wit's End and the more uptempo Humor Risk . I named both top albums in 2011. One of the more interesting singer/songwriters out there, he plays Lincoln Hall Sunday in what should be a very good show. McCombs previewed the song Mystery Mail (from Humor Risk ) at Pitchfork fest in 2010. Check out this video for the 2009 song [...]

Cass McCombs' show at the Garrison this Friday night was a treat for all those in attendance. The opener, Frank Fairfield — a violin and banjo-toting songwriter from California — set the stage with whimsical, southern-style tunes that had the crowd tapping their feet and clapping along with the occasional "Yip!" hollered into the night. When McCombs and his band finally hit the stage just before midnight, the crowd was right riled-up and ready to sway to songs from his most recent release, Humor Risk. The backdrop — a glittering matrix [...]

Before Wit's End, before Catacombs and before the near universal 'year-end list' acclaim, Cass McCombs quietly released A in 2004 via the Monitor label. I've been reintroducing the album piecemeal into my radio show over the past few months. Revisit the pair of A's opening tracks, below, or check them out for the first time. [...]
