Big news in the folkworld yesterday as Bob Dylan received a Special Citation from the Pulitzer Prize folks for his "profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." In response, For the Sake of the Song turns up a set of stellar live Dylan rarities, and claims Dylan's recognition as a big win for rock and roll, but we know better -- that description has folk written all over it, doesn't it? Kudos, Bob. This would be the perfect moment [...]

Tomorrow is the first day of Spring, and someone forgot to tell the sky. In the morning, says the weatherman, the world will turn to slush. And if we are truly blessed, all our sins will be washed away. Outside the snow sulks in great mounds where the plows have pushed it aside. Hard ice falls on three-inch shoots and tufts of new grass. We stay up late, and sit by the window together, and wait for the rains that do not come. [...]

I can say, without much doubt, that this will be the best soundtrack released in the first half of 2008 . Based on the track list – complete with many Late Greats faves – it is a lowkey affair that leans towards the coffeehouse jazz sound. The album comes out on April Fool's Day . Complete track list: 1. Norah Jones ∞ The Story ( stream ) 2. Cat Power ∞ Living Proof 3. Ry Cooder ∞ Ely Nevada 4. Otis Redding ∞ Try A Little Tenderness 5. Ruth Brown ∞ [...]

It's this feeling I get walking down the sunlit hall, that thing that pricks my upper vena cava. It's that twitch in my facial muscles, the scent that makes my eye-lids heavy and my neurons fire up like fourth of July. Le je ne sais quoi, qui me fait sourir et dancer avec tes cheveaux. Music for sitting down on that warm bench over there... 1. José Gonzalez - Down the Line ( [...]
The big news in the Straw household: we got cell phones . Both The Duchess and I have abstained from them all our lives. We finally succumbed to the pressure. I would like to say we picked AT& T because they used The Band's "The Weight" in a commercial. But it was because of their rollover feature. It did get me thinking about all the different versions of this song. I LOVE that a lot of females tackle the tune. So here are oodles of [...]

This may be my all-time favorite mix. A perfect blend of acoustic guitars and piano, all mellow in mood. All album ending tracks. Perfect to play before bed. I may post v1.0; but it's not as good. Working on v3.0… keep your sleepy eyes peeled. 1 ~ Michael Gulezian: Golgotha 2 ~ Kaki King: My Insect Life 3 ~ Joe Henry: Scar 4 ~ Cassandra Wilson: Harvest Moon 5 ~ Kathleen Edwards: Sweet [...]

This is an oldie but a goodie. An oldie in the sense that it was released back in ’99 on an album Cassandra Wilson recorded to honor Miles Davis. I love the way the two acoustic guitars play off each other and the theme of the song is one to live by. Listen ~ Right Here, Right Now Bonus ~ It Would Be So Easy (comes from her latest release) Get more Wilson @ The Hype Machine Buy it [...]

Listening to CP18 , I remembered I used the Beastie’s song “In 3s†on an old summer mix. I dug it out and got it ready for your enjoyment. The mix of tunes is nearly as hot as the weather. (I guess I was into Python’s Holy Grail when I made this.) 1. Beastie Boys ~ In 3s 2. Beth Orton ~ Daybreaker 3. Erin McKeown ~ Slung Lo [...]
