Ghost , the debut record from Book Club , a new project lead by Cassavetes ' Robbie Horlick, comes out next week (August 2). With Book Club , Horlick has put away the indie rock of Cassavetes in favour of a forthright folk approach, enlisting the aid of local talents such as Oryx & Crake 's Matt Jarrard and vocalist Leigh Anne Macquarrie. The result is a heart-felt and beautifully crafted collection of ten songs that is not only Horlick's most remarkable release to date, but also one of the best records that will [...]

Alanta-based band, Book Club is the new quintet founded by Robbie Horlick of the band Cassavetes. The folk project also features Leigh Anne Macquarrie lending her vocals to the album's harmonies. The band's upcoming album is entitled Ghost and will be released digitally and on limited edition vinyl, through 2Step Records, on August 2nd. Each comes with a handmade bookmark. " Meal Of Dreams " starts off as sparse singer/songwriter fare, but expands into a lush folk-pop gem in which Horlick and Macquarrie's [...]

Intercutting incredible street footage of Chicago African-American life with a staged interracial party, CRY is part essay, part manifesto, and as startling today as it must have been in the late 1950s. Music is provided by the singular Sun Ra and his Arkestra, who are seen and heard performing at the height of their swing heyday. Shot with practically no budget by a volunteer crew numbering some 65 people, THE CRY OF JAZZ was the only film made by Ed Bland who went on to have a distinguished career as composer, arranger, and producer for the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, [...]

By Matt Jarrard Another installment of Matt's new series where he asks Atlanta musicians the question: "What Do You Do From 9-5?" Robbie Horlick from Cassavetes and Book Club (Photo Courtesy of Kevin Griggs) Whats your day job? Criminal defense attorney. Oh really...so what is it that you ACTUALLY do? Defend those charged with violations of Georgia law. What's your favorite [...]

The first thing that captured my attention was Cassavetes' name. When I stumbled across them earlier this year I remember hoping that they played gritty, minimalist soundtrack music in keeping with their namesake . (That or that they were a Fugazi tribute band. Either way.) Instead I was presented with a melodic indie rock outfit that create concise, meticulously crafted songs that somehow manage to feel airy and loose-limbed and, yet, strangely intimate as well. There's a vibrant pulse to their music that you can't quite put your finger on. Seemingly simple, unassuming songs unwind [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Titus Andronicus w/ Free Energy, Turf War Monday, September 19 The Earl - 488 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta, GA 30316 Admission is $10 ADV / $12 DOS / Purchase Tickets The restless urgency of Titus Andronicus' music and the sprawling anthems it produces have made for some of the rowdiest, most gloriously uproarious noise to be committed to wax in recent years. Despite their cynical and paranoid "us against them" themes, the mood always feels celebratory—a [...]

I'm still catching up on all of the local records released while I was on hiatus, but one of the better ones to drop during that time was Cassavetes ' newest, Faja Blues . Robert Horlick has this raw, emotional, almost magical quality to his music that seems unquantifiable yet potent. You can stream and then purchase the entire record below, but here's a cut from it to preview: Cassavetes : "If I Had Eyes" Stream/Buy Faja Blues [...]

From their Album Faja Blues recently released on Goodnight Records Cassavetes ' second album Faja Blues continues on the continuum started on their 2006 release Funny Story , and captures Horlick and company at their most reflective yet, experimenting in their comfort, framing stories of love, life, and other nouns with a seamless array of psychedelic Americana (If I Had Eyes), Kiwi pop (Hugh, That's Another Story), and slow-burning gems (I Dreamed I Had A Heart Attack). Matt Cherry : Bass, Synth, Backing Vocals [...]

Just when you thought this icon had died...it's back! I've had a great four months since I moved here to Atlanta and seen more shows then I've been able to document. However, it looks like I'll be leaving here in a month. So, I wanted to give our readers a taste of some of the cool acts from this city. There are a few obvious ones...a few painfully obscure ones...and a few that should be huge any day now. For our Athens, GA readers...there will be a Spotlight: Athens forthcoming. [...]

Cassavetes Funny Story Headphone Treats  Cassavetes , an Atlanta-based band, have just released their first full-length album. And for those who have been patiently waiting, it was well worth the wait. A mix of previous band mates and “Craig’s List†finds, Cassavetes began by developing songs lead singer Robbie Horlick wrote while playing in the now defunct !The Killing’s Gotta Stop, Ese!. As they grew, Cassavetes started performing and writing songs together. Funny Story is the fruit of their labor. [...]
