This past week, folk rock band Maps and Atlases released their brand new LP, Beware and Be Grateful , along with the dates of their April European tour. I've been listening to Maps and Atlases for a while now, as well as lead singer Dave Davison's side project Cast Spells , and I can safely say that their music continues to develop both in general sound and in complexity. They create a very low key presence on their albums, yet the quartet from Chicago can really put on a rad show. [...]

All's well that ends well. Sure, it rained all week, but it's nice and sunny outside with just a tiny nip in the air. Naturally, that means it is time to party down while we still can. This weekend, especially, is a doozy. There are so many great shows that it is almost impossible to choose among them. Some of the shows we're all abuzz over are Gypsyblood at Liar's Club , Dead Milkmen at Congress Theater and Local H at the Metro . Let's hop to it, [...]

Cast Spells - Letters I came across this song on a recent Sargent House compilation, although it was originally released on a split with Good Old War (back before there was even an iPad 1). Something about the tune has been making me reach for the repeat button all morning and roaming the internet for more Cast Spells loveliness. I think it is the simple beauty of it that hits the hardest. Turns out that Cast Spells is another musical project from the talented Maps & Atlases [...]

Listening to Cast Spells fills you up 'til you burst with alliterative adjectives like GREAT! and GLORIOUS! Words which are not at all too grandiose when talking about work from the genius mind of David Davidson (also from Maps & Atlases ). From the 2009 EP Bright Works and Baton comes a brand new video for "Glamorous Glowing," directed by Behn Fanning. In a swift two-and-a-half minutes, the video perfectly captures the unique, clever and colorful nature of the music itself. Cast Spells [...]

With it's release being late last summer, Cast Spells ' Bright Works and Baton is finally getting some of the music video treatment. "Glamorous Glowing" is up first and in the video we see a set of colored blocks coordinating their lighting to the sounds of the different instruments. As this Lite Brite-esque mass floats around the different nature and urban scenes, I cannot help but think that this should be featured on a commercial for Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. Anyone else agree? [...]

Here is David Davison, of both Cast Spells and Maps & Atlases, performing the Cast Spells song "Glamorous Glowing" from the Cast Spells' EP Bright Works and Baton which came out last year live with members of his band Maps & Atlases and Teri Bender in the Sargent House Glassroom. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a mouthful. Anyway, if you have seen Maps & Atlases on tour this year they probably played this song during their set, and its origin is just that it is from the Davison solo project called [...]

I've written plenty on Good Old War, so naturally I'm freaking out over the release of their new self-titled album. For those of you not familiar with the trio, let me sum them up for you: harmonies, harmonies, HARMONIES. Keith Goodwin, Dan Schwartz, and Tim Arnold channel Simon & Garfunkel in a way that nearly rivals the folk icons themselves. The guys' latest effort sees them perfecting the organic folk pop they know while branching out into new bluesy territories (as we began to see on their split EP with ATG-favorite Cast Spells [...]

I'm both shocked and dismayed to realize that I've yet to post about one of my very favorite - top 5, without a doubt - releases from last year. Cast Spells' "Bright Works And Batons" EP came out last August and, although I immediately liked it - mostly because of David Davison's captivating voice - it took me a little while to really love it. It snuck up on me over time, one track here and there on shuffle, until I noticed that it was what I most wanted to listen to [...]
You may have heard about Cast Spells' frontman already, or at least about his other project. Cast Spells is a side project, you see (and a mighty fine one at that) of David Davison, who also just so happens to be in another upcoming (scratch that, they've been around for about 6 years but are only just releasing their debut album) and hotly-tipped band called Maps & Atlases who are releasing their debut album "Perch Patchwork" at the end of June. Cast Spells on the other hand have released an absolutely stellar EP "Bright Works And [...]

Ryan(StopMe): I'm still buzzing from seeing Kick-Ass at the cinema and went on a Mark Millar Comics spree as soon as I got out of the theatre. First I read the twisted humour of 'Wanted' (So much better than the lame film adaptation), then on to the fascinating 'Red-Son' which is about what the world would be like if Superman was a Soviet instead of a blue-eyed American son, and now I'm halfway into 'Kick-Ass' itself. It hasn't all been Superheroes and Supervillians this week as I've found another ten delightful tunes: [...]

It's always impressive when a live performance holds true to the recorded version of a song, as is the case with the song Pioneer Scalps , below.
