T here isn't much in the way of new releases for this week. As a result, this new epimisode ( number 91 if you're counting) of Festival City Radio is chok-full of some more new releases for October 23: Castanets - " Sway " (0) iLIKETRAINS - "The Deception" (5:00) Subtle - "Deathful" (9:40) David Gahan - "Kingdom" (13:40) Phosphorescent - " A Picture of [...]

Time to clean out the inbox and load up the iPod once...today's 8-track is a sampling of some of the best tunes and new band discoveries that have made their way into RFC HQ in the past couple of months. Official press scouting reports are included in the parentheses. 1. Castanets - "Sway" ( a fusion of electronica and Americana wrought from the violence and loss inherent to a nation's creation ) 2. [...]

A great week for twee releases as Saturday Looks Good to Me's Fill Up the Room and Tullycraft's Every Scene Needs a Center could both very well be on my year-end list. I haven't heard all of the Tullycraft record yet, but I will be picking this one up before I head to work today. Other notable releases include Ryan Adams' (yawn..) Follow the Lights EP, Prefuse 73's Preparations and Ween's La Cucaracha . While [...]

Image: Takashi Iwasaki Rain Will Come - Castanets So , it starts. So. So is a story in the middle that already knows its end. So, rain will come. It's a cracked china-heart declaration sung stolid as steel. It hums prophetic in Ray Raposa's taut rubber-band throat, is exhaled with biblical authority through his ruddy [...]
EAR FARM's Three for Free: three EF approved, free and legal MP3s posted each week. This week - three from Castanets . Listen: "Sway" "This is the Early Game" "All That I Know"

If you're typically one to miss the boat on the latest new music (hey, we can't all be hipsters), then you'll be quite pleased with this week's new releases, which contain a plethora of reissues, like The Virginian by Neko Case, Vol. 1 by The Besnard Lakes, Lochloosa by Mofro, Comments of the Inner Chorus by Tunng, and Blue Scholars' self-titled debut. Other reissues are available from Of Montreal, Turbonegro, Nick Drake, and two from Black Moth Super Rainbow. Also, while it's more of a sequel than a reissue, Neil Young's [...]

Locals! What are you doing on Halloween? Asthmatic Kitty Records and Kangaroo Press will be putting on a fantastic show at the Harrison Center Underground if you're at a loss. Even if you're not at a loss for things to do, this is going to be better. Castanets are out touring their new album, so if that isn't reason enough, they'll be joined by AK noobs Cryptacize [...]

New Wax Raymond Raposa is the mastermind behind Castanets, a project often lumped into the Freak Folk category, but with its share of pedal steel guitars and slow drums, Castanets' newest release In The Vines sounds like it'd make a fitting soundtrack to a dark modern remake of Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars . Directed by David Lynch. There's a dreariness in the material here and Raposa's slightly off-kilter vocals invoke visions of desolate landscapes and tumbleweeds. While the songs aren't [...]
Big show in Fishtown tonight and a rather interesting mix of artists. Castanets , from San Diego and featuring members of Pinback, Rocket From The Crypt and Tristeza, headline the show. With them are the aptly labeled next-one-to-blow-up-and-become -famous The 1900s . See them in a more intimate setting before they become huge. Philly songstress Birdie Busch and electro-folk (!?) artist Ponieheart add the local flavor. Castanets - Three Days Four Nights The 1900s - When I Say Go Birdie Busch - [...]

Castanets will be releasing their new album, In The Vines , on October 23, 2007 on Asthmatic Kitty. In support of this new release, Castanets will be playing select dates across the U.S. with Deer Tick and members of Deer Tick will make up Castanets' backing band. Recently, the live Castanets' community has included such folks as Sufjan Stevens, Nick Delffs (Shaky Hands), Rob Lowe (Lichens) and Annie Clark (St. Vincent). Castanets' template may be country music, but the collective energy conjures up elements of noise, free jazz, black metal and electronic abstractions. [...]

A lot of people have used a lot of strange terms to describe Castanets. The brain child of Raymond Raposa has a constantly shifting lineup, and has been lumped in with this freak folk movement we are in the middle of while being labeled goth-folk, avante-country, psyche-Americana, and a million other ridiculous sub-sub genres. It gets to the point where the labeling becomes all anyone talks about and they miss out on the fantastic sounds Castanets are producing. On his new album, In The Vines , Raposa has written some of the best music of his career. [...]

We posted " When Under Either " a month ago, mentioning our surprise at the understated, "wonderfully strange" choice for a first single. Turns out it's just about the loudest moment on White Chalk , P.J. Harvey's captivating eighth full-length, her first studio recording since 2004's Uh Huh Her . Some people excel at higher volumes, stumble a bit when there's no distortion to fall back upon. Then there are folks like Polly Jean Harvey who do both with such seeming ease, continually rewriting their own oeuvre in the process.
