If the stars would have aligned, Castledoor would be touring on its second album about now, building on the momentum they had back in 2007 . Instead the band bade farewell early last year, its members scattering and its songs echoing (still lovingly, it should be pointed out) in the iPods of veteran Silver Lakers. As you'd expect, though, fans have not heard the last of frontman Nate Cole's soaring vocals. Cole and his lifemate/bandmate Liska have relocated to Brooklyn and released a song each of the past three months as Doom & Gloom [...]

Taylor Locke has all the makings of a pop star. He has the comportment of a rock frontman, the requisite guitar licks and a boyish tenor that sounds oh so earnest when he belts out all those songs about girls. He has apprenticed as guitarist in the L.A. quintet Rooney . And suddenly, about two years after his songwriting collaboration with Chris Price spawned Taylor Locke & the Roughs , he has a two-album catalog. With "Grain & Grape," released last March, and "Marathon" only seven months later, Locke's new quartet embraces the sharp, melody-rich pop [...]

It's time for something a little special here on dysonsound. We've all made mixtapes in our life, and if you haven't? Try it out! November is a special month because you have the opportunity to give something back to male health while men around the world grow ridiculous looking hair on their upper lip. And thank god for gracious girlfriends and wives who put up with this and the women who are actually participating (not by growing mustaches hopefully). This month is officially called Movember . Not sure what it's all about? Well, [...]

The online music publication QRO Magazine recently asked me to curate a mix of indie pop songs in the "Knox Road" mold for their "Thank You For Being A Friend Giveaway" . Essentially, we teamed up with 3 other super blogs - Cream Team , No Modest Bear , and Anti-Gravity Bunny - to make four respective mixes as one of the prize packs for participants. Originally, the giveaway was going to be exclusive to QRO, but they've given us the go ahead to provide you with our mix. Regular readers [...]
Sorry for yesterday here are a bunch of fresh tunes, actually some might be old, but I am not concerned with recently CD releases except for Sarah Harmers. MP3: Sarah Harmer - Captive Captive is from her album that came out yesterday, Oh Little Fire . I have always liked her folky chick with a guitar thing. Good stuff. MP3: Club 8 - Western Hospitality While they sound nothing like super cheesy brit-pop/tv show band S Club 7, that is all I can think about when [...]

The best recommendation services in the world can't top the human recommendation model. It's perfect . Someone knows a few bands you like, they calculate it in their heads, and BLAM , the next new love of your musical life is waiting for you to hit play on. Many companies go out and try to analyze what we might like next based off what we have previously listened to. Some do a great job of this ( Echo Nest , Pandora ) But their algorithms are missing something big. EMOTION [...]
![[MP3] Castledoor: "Flashlight"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2546099_lg.jpg)
Well, there really isn't much to say here, aside from how awesome this song is. "Flashlight" comes from LA's Castledoor, an act I think I heard a couple years back but just recently took the time to seek out (which makes me fairly upset, as they've been going at it for five years now). What makes me more upset, however, is that Castledoor announced in February that a couple members (the guitarist and synth player) were leaving the group and that the group as everyone knew it would be changing a bit. However, the plan for Nate and Liska (vocalists [...]
photography by Benjamin Hoste On Princeton's final night of their Spaceland residency, Castledoor played their last show with their current line up. Their performance was noticeably emotional especially for singer Nate Cole who flung himself about at times while at times slightly shifting a song's lyrics.

There are people who know Jack Gibson as an aspiring filmmaker, as an untiring supporter, and even as a perspiring drunk. This week, with the release of "Shelters," his third album as Tenlons Fort , Gibson has solidified his identity as an inspiring songwriter. Whether "Shelters" — a startlingly beautiful, strikingly intimate collection of 10 songs — propels Gibson from one of L.A.'s best-kept secrets to folk hero is anyone's guess. He's done a yeoman's job of dodging success so far, as he'd be the first to admit. But in a city teeming with singer-songwriters plumbing the [...]

Castledoor frontman Nate Cole says the remaining members of the L.A. pop band need to time to figure out what's next in the wake of the departure of Gabe and Coury Combs. "We're working out the next steps and considering the options," he says. At the band's final show as a six-piece Monday at Spaceland, Cole and crew weren't overly emotional — it was merely typically big, earnest Castledoor pop. And in a way, it won't be the last fans hear of Castledoor in that incarnation: The group is finishing mixes on a new five-song digital EP, "Flashlight," that [...]

With dates with Editors and including Noisepop & SXSW!
Spaceland has got three exciting residencies in February. Mia Doi Todd will take us swimming in the river of life while Imaad Wasif channels the void and Princeton reveals they don't play tennis, they're a rock and roll band. Mia Doi Todd Tuesday nights in February with the Tapered Steel Band (Andres Renteria, Brian Akio-Martinez & Michel Gondry) Feb [...]

[Fun, festive fundraisers. Cool concerts. Punchy parties. And the Pity Party. This weekend has it all, and I must be quick so I can try to find my godawful-est sweater for the Christmas Sweater Festival on Saturday:] Tonight: Foreign Born [pictured] headlines Spaceland. I hope they use the sleigh bells if they play "Union Hall." ... Red Cortez , the VLA , Rademacher and the Growlers play a benefit for Artists in Aid at the Edgar Varela Fine Arts [...]
The Black Hollies come from the psychedelic state of New Jersey and put chocolate and hot sauce but not crack in their bodies from time to time. They don't exactly sound like the Shades, the Rovin' Flames or the Cavemen but they probably have those 45s. Bassist/singer Justin Morey takes a break from the chocolate factory to talk. [Birthday wishes Sunday to Ride's Mark Gardener. Here's what's up for our weekend:] Tonight: Big night for the Airborne Toxic Event — the local quintet, just back from a European tour, is playing Disney Hall. They'll be joined by the Calder Quartet. TATE also recently released a Midnight Ridazz-inspired video for the single "Gasoline" [can't embed it, sorry, probably because they're selling it as part of an iTunes bundle, but you can see it here ]. ... The Cranberries [pictured] have gotten [...]

The beers were flavorful, and the indie-rock was tasty — all that was missing from the first Hollywood Brew Fest on Saturday at the Fonda Theatre was a good crowd. The event went flat under a sparse turnout, despite a formidable beer menu and a reasonable-for-an-event-of-its -kind ticket price of $45 (which got you unlimited tastings in nifty 5-ounce glasses all night). The music certainly wasn't lacking in hops. Great Northern [that's Rachel Stolte, pictured at top], Nico Stai and Castledoor turned in typically energetic sets, and Samuel Stewart and [...]

Craft beer meets locally crafted indie rock on Saturday at the first Hollywood Brew Fest — and it's a good day to forget you ever took that big swig of PBR. The Brew Fest, which runs from 3 to 11 p.m. at the Fonda Theatre and the adjacent Blue Palms Brewhouse, offers unlimited tastings from more than 35 craft brewers. The $45 ticket price (VIP entry is $60 and gets you all kinds of special treatment) also gets you a day of beers, burgers and bands, with a formidable lineup of local rockers topped by L.A. [...]
