So, the world didn't end yesterday - good thing I didn't post my "Apocalypse Now Biatch " playlist, featuring the likes of CREED and Poison. Continue to enjoy existence with the help of this week's playlist, which includes new material from 13 & God, Fol Chen, and Danger Mouse. I Walked [ft. Simone White] (Sufjan Stevens cover) - Fol Chen Death Minor - 13 & God Calgary - Bon Iver Let Them Talk - Hugh Laurie Slip Away - Clarence Carter [...]

Fists From: Nottingham, Midlands, United Kingdom Fists were featured back in March last year ( Fist Fighting ) when I described them as rockabilly rebels with a fine line in noisy, ramshackle rock that fizzes like a mouthful of refreshers. Well they've come a long way in 12 short months. They're still noisy and they still have the odd ramshackle rockabilly gem like [...]

This is a review I did for Catatonia's 2001 'Paper Scissors Stone' album (their 4th and final LP) back in 2004. You can listen to the opening track 'Godspeed' as well as my favourite track from the band 'Lost Cat' below. Both sound so euphoric a decade/decade and a half on. The vitality and energy of Catatonia's brilliant debut 'Way Beyond Blue' seemed to dissipate down a Welsh valley on 'International Velvet'. As the band tore the charts apart, each new release revealed a diminishing level of inspiration. 'Paper Scissors Stone' was a glorious return [...]
Making the long journey up to the top floor of Topman on Oxford Street - a journey of countless escalators - gave me pause enough to think that this was a fairly odd place to be conducting an interview. As usual, the place was full to the brim with shoppers and had loud music thumping overhead. That is, I suppose, unless it's an interview regarding a Topman associated event in which case it makes perfect sense. So here I was, in the relative calm that is the Style Lounge, meeting (probably) the nicest man in radio. [...]

As the love of my life and my partner in crime, Paloma got to to spend twelve hours in the car journeying to my hometown for Thanksgiving. (as always, she was a trooper, possessing a grace that the wife of a head of state on a junket to a foreign land would be hard pressed to match) The foreign land in this case being a small town in Indiana and, yes, growing up there in the '80s was indeed like being in a John Cougar song. (he'll always be [...]

The race for the top of the charts on October 25th looks to be upset by an out of nowhere appearance of an internet viral. Over the weekend, this charity single shot to the top of the Amazon pre-order charts. A Welsh miner's protest song, it was adopted by the football terraces to raise money for a statue for twice-wounded battle of the Somme veteran Fred Keenor. Without a single piece of paid PR or radio play, simple word-of-mouth has seen the likes of Cheryl Cole and JLS run for cover. The group is made up of Jonathan Owen, Catatonia guitarist [...]

Toronto - Anyone who grew up in the 90s will remember The X-Files . It was one of the best shows during that time and a true original. Part horror, part sci-fi, part drama - the X-Files was for most part, one of the must watch shows during it's early era. It certainly bred one of the most famous platonic televisions of all time (until later seasons) - Mulder and Scully. Mulder was the believer, always choosing to believe in the paranormal while Sculder was the skeptic, always referring to science in all cases. Their banter back and forth [...]

Nu știu cum sunteți voi, dar eu am câteva piese care îmi place să mi le pun când îs singură și nu ma vede nimeni, și să dansez prin casa pe ele. Aled Richards, who used to be doing the dubberdubberdubber behind Cerys Matthews, is going to fill the gap in Killing For Company left by the death of Stuart Cable, the band have confirmed . Singer Greg Jones told Wales Online they were so all over the place, they nearly forgot they'd need a drummer: "It may sound corny, but that's how it feels to us because writing and playing these songs with Stuart is all we've really known for the last five years," said the 36-year-old, "replacing Stu was the last thing on our minds [...]

Well, I thought I would take a stab at this. Like I said before, I like lists - especially the Best Of kind. For me the 90's are kind of a blur (no pun intended) to me. To be honest, I missed out on a lot of these bands and didn't get familiar with them until early 2000. I was married during the 90's and my wife did not have any passion for music which in turn, reflected back on me. I was forced constantly to listen to modern radio and did not experience some of these bands during that [...]
Andy Parle, the former drummer from Liverpool, England band Space , died on Saturday aged 42 in an incident police have described as "unexplained." Parle -- who drummed on Space hits such as 'Neighbourhood', 'The Female of the Species' and 'Me and You Versus the World' -- was crossing the road in Dingle, Liverpool on Saturday night when he collapsed. Passersby and paramedics gave help at the scene, and he was then taken to the Liverpool Royal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His former bandmate, Dave "Yorkie" Palmer, told the Liverpool Echo [...]

A bar in Spain has come up with an unusual marketing plan for these recessionary times. Customers at the Casa Pocho bar in Cullera, southern Spain, are encouraged to come in for a drink and to insult the staff while they're at it. Free drinks will be given to patrons who can come up with novel or humorous ways of verbally abusing the bar staff. To be frank, I experience this every time I go to The Abbey Bar in Galbally , Co Limerick. The customers are often quite explicit and forthright in their criticisms and demands [...]

The three-disc Britpop-of-the-'90s compilation Common People -named after the Pulp song, of course-comes out in June, and it will come packaged with liner notes written by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley. While the track listing does have more than its share of gems , the absence of feuding NME titans Blur and Oasis will no doubt cause lots of message-board handwringing, perhaps even more than the presence of Gay Dad . Get ready to argue over what songs were missed by checking out the full tracklisting after the jump! [...]

I remember seeing Catatonia in London back in 2000, they were really entertaining, and new how to play live, this recording was therefore a pleasure to get hold of. Performing at The Newport Centre, Gwent, in Wales, on Thursday 26th March 1998, Catatonia were on this occasion supporting Travis (Idlewild were also on the bill), nonetheless they played a full set. Also included is material from a BBC Radio One session. Source: FM Stereo recording. Sound Quality: Very good mp3 @192kbps. [...]
As promised, The Pop Cop went along to Central Station to witness Scotland's first-ever Silent Rave. The authorities tried to ban it, but Glasgow doesn't pass up the opportunity to dance in public that easily. Here's what went down... 13.55: We walk into Central Station from Union Street, there are about half a dozen police officers in yellow jackets on the stairway, shooshing folk as they walk in. This is supposed to be a 'silent' rave after all. Who says the cops don't have a sense of humour? [...]

So the wife and I aren't huge fans of the television. By television I mean "cable". Not quite my thing. See, since we both are involved in the arts and music, and she's in school and I'm in a grueling line of work... sitting around and getting my brain raped by VH1 reality shows doesn't sound like much fun. That was my life 4 years ago when I was total scum. I'd rather not relive that. HOWEVER... that doesn't mean I don't want to relive 14 years ago (Jesus I'm [...]
The Hot Springs Genre: Thrash / Pop / Psychedelic From: Montreal, Canada Last October the Devil featured a review of the debut album from one of Canada's most exciting new bands, The Hot Springs ( Heat Is Rising ). Well they've just released a new single, the Catatonia on steroids 'Fog and the Horn', the best track off [...]
