Wherever does one go from a glistering synth-pop opus reconceptualising the life of John DeLorean? Well, to an ever blithe re-envisaging of the life of Italian lefty Giangiacomo Feltrinelli – the inspiratory founder of one of the Mediterranean's most widely lionised 20th century publishing houses, of course. And Praxis Makes Perfect – the wondrously outré sophomore recording from the pair comprising Gruff Rhys and Bryan Hollon known only as Neon Neon – is, appositely I suppose, the sound of the duo becoming that bit better acquainted with one another. And although the power balladry [...]
"Things have to change just to stay the same" Gruff Rhys soothes in that inimitable North Walian croon of his on a track entitled The Leopard. It features on the forthcoming sophomore Neon Neon record Praxis Makes Perfect , the project comprising the Super Furry Animal and Boom Bip – aka Bryan Hollon – but the song itself derives its title from Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's seminal Il Gattopardo , a revered literary work first posthumously published by the Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Editore in 1958. And irrespective of the "fascist architecture" cited amid the oppressive industrial electropop [...]

Neon Neon have announced details of their new record, as well as given out a new song stream. Their new record Praxis Makes Perfect will be out April 29th via Lex Records. The first track from the record, Cate Le Bon-assisted 'Mid Century Modern Nightmare', is [...]

Here's the list of my favorite albums outside of Seattle for 2012. You may think it's late, but you should know I got it done before the Russian New Year. Kevin Shields, you still have a few more days. 1. Exlovers - exlovers ( Young And Lost Club ) Exlovers had my favorite single of 2011 and now my favorite record of 2012. Their debut album is a dreampop masterpiece that was a long time coming from this London band. [...]

I have loafed about this Christmas - reading, drinking, watching films and generally living the life, which has been great, but now I find myself with just a few hours in which to throw this together… To be honest, it feels like I’ve already done this once already having been asked to nominate five 2012 records for the January Lpgrp session. I managed it with some difficulty (particularly as my Lpgrp line manager made me nominate one to be the best of them all – wild stab…), so seven should be a piece of (Christmas) pudding, eh? [...]

December 19, 2012 We thought about flipping this to run 6 - 10 but why confuse everyone in the middle of the week? In the order you know and love then here are the penultimate five albums in this year's countdown. 10 - Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury – Drokk : Music Inspired By Mega City One Quite a prolific year for Geoff Barrow this, what with having the [...]

Feed your head... Royal Baths: Better Luck Next Life Seems like every week a new-to-me psych-rock band bubbles up onto my radar and, well, I just can’t resist. Earlier this year, this album entered the rotation and, with its dark-energy, guitar-mayhem intensity, it didn’t leave for quite a while. Bluesy garage rock riffs couple with dreamy vocals belie the Royal Baths roots in San Francisco and their relocation to Brooklyn. It’s evil, but not angry - play it loud. Spotify : [...]

► Garbage headlines the Palladium behind their new album "Not Your Kind of People," with Screaming Females opening. ► The Shins visit the Gibson Amphitheatre of their acclaimed new album "Port of Morrow," and joining them on this tour is Washed Out , the woozy electronic band fronted by Ernest Greene whose own new album "Within and Without" has gotten a lot of deserved love too. Date Saturday, September 29th Location Red 7 Doors 900 PM Tickets $10 from Transmission For those of you fortunate enough to have caught St. Vincent last year at ACL Live, I hope you caught the beautiful songstress that is Cate Le Bon . photos by Jessica Amaya ; words by Bill Pearis Cate Le Bon @ Union Pool, 9/22/2012 Cate Le Bon 's second of two NYC shows this past weekend was at Union Pool on Saturday (9/22) and was a woolier affair than her show at Mercury Lounge the night before . The crowd was more into it, and Cate and her band, who played against a projected VHS test pattern backdrop, were clearly having [...]

The Biscuits and Gravy mixes are the results of "leftover" promotional mp3s from past mixes. For one reason or another, these mp3s didn't fit onto a mix at the time of release. The mp3s sit on a hard drive, all alone until they are united with mp3s who have suffered a similar fate. These tracks are ready to make you sing out loud, dance, ponder your existence, and prevent you from smashing in your dashboard on that long commute to work. Download it, burn to CD, load it on your audio device, do what you want, but most of all [...]

photos by Amanda Hatfield , words by Bill Pearis Cate Le Bon @ Mercury Lounge, 9/21/2012 Cate Le Bon was in New York for two shows this weekend , following an appearance earlier in the week at Pop Montreal. Friday night (9/21) she played an early show at Mercury Lounge with Boston psych-folk quartet Quilt making for a well-matched double bill. Those whose only know Le Bon from her [...]

I miss mid-902s Gorky's Zygotic Mynci . They skirted delightfully close to whimsy, but never too close. They were magical without being fey. Psychedelic without being indulgent. And cheeky without being annoying. They tightrope walked across numerous pitfalls but elegantly kept their balance. So, I was overjoyed tonight when I heard a new tune from fellow Welsh songstress, Cate Le Bon today. It's called What Is Worse and it's a beautiful Gorky's -esque stumble-ballad. I love it - check it out [...]

It's that time of year where I head up to Montreal for Pop Montreal . The festival is in it's 11th year. I will be attending this year's festival from September 19 - 22. Sadly I am going to miss out Sunday's events. Here is a list of what to see on September 19th. They may change on the day of. So if you really want me to see your set, you must give me really good reason! [...]

End of the Road next week… better get on with these… Welsh Revival? Still got a bunch more recordings from Green Man to share with you, and for this post I’ll make them all artists from the Principality itself. If you were to count Super Furry Animals and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci as the first wave of new Welsh bands (probably a bit spurious I know…), then there’s definitely a second wave of great, new music coming out of Wales these days. And with not a single Super Furry Animal, and [...]
