Wake up folks, it's Saturday and it is eerily close to summer here in Calgary and my first good patio experience was yesterday. Well...at least the basics were there - sun, suds, good food and good conversation and despite me and my wife wearing most of her sister's balsamic dressing, it was nice. But today is another day and it looks like another nice one. The sun has risen and I am feeling like grass between my toes might be needed - many take it for granted, but lush grass on bare feet is what summer is about. [...]

You see, contrary to what certain portions of the industry would have you believe, women have not in fact taken over the music world at the expense of everything else. Rather, they are just starting to garner the slice of attention that constituting 50% of the population would generally suggest... As Paloma Faith puts it: "The whole of bloody history has been saturated by men for the last fucking however long! So don't make it like we've suddenly appeared out of the woodwork - we were there already, it's just that the business has decided to embrace talented women because [...]
So in this post I'm wearing my musically-inclined fiction suit, The Rex Monday, to offer up another virtual mixtape of sorts. There's not much of a mix, per se-more like old-school tapes I'd pass around with friends, where songs play in order to convey a story or a psychic state. If you're of a certain age, you likely know exactly what I mean. Yeah, this is another blind stab in my attempt to deal with Mr. Skips and me parting ways. I'm not at a place where I can really write much about it. I know I'm going [...]
(photo by Roberto Foddai) A few months back, we featured London's Catherine A.D. as one of our "emerging" artists that we thought would be (and is) on the cusp of a full-scale pop culture takeover saying she was "gentle, coy, nearly-too-endearing-for-its-o wn good". Today, we got wind of yet another piece of evidence to push that mark up even further in this, a cover version of one of Catherine's apparent favorite songs from 2008, "Paris" by Friendly Fires . Instead of the original's complete lift of feeling from A Certain Ratio, [...]

Catherine A.D. has a hauntingly beautiful voice thats along the lines of Kate Bush, Tori Amos etc, which of course makes me a fan...and Courtney Love is already a fan! On first listen I became intrigued...and thanks to the very lovely MK of Popbytes I was able to be introduced to her. No sows in the States yet but there will be two upcoming gigs in London on February 14 at the Notting Hill Arts Club and on February 27 at the Royal Festival Hall. Hopefully we can have a surprise [...]

(photo by Rebecca Miller) A gentle, coy, nearly-too-endearing-for-its-o wn good emanates from Catherine A.D. , a woman who hones her honeyed voice over lilting piano and simple orchestration of drums and chamber-pop-instruments. Many comparisons have been made to a sort of hybridization of fellow countrymen Kate Bush and Patrick Wolf, but we actually hear much more of Stories From The City -era PJ Harvey . She's just released an EP called Carry Your Heart , and in its three songs, we get all sorts of wonderful fire, chanteuse-like cooing and dark sturm und [...]

NEW BANDS '09 PT.1 - THE BIDDING HOPEFULS words: Jamie Milton Welcome stranger, to the first part in three of MFM's guide to the forthcoming year. Here, we note down all the bands worthy of being crowed next year's MGMT, Klaxons or whoever was huge in 2006 and we ultimately forgot about... 'Bidding Hopefuls' is defined by us writers as an act that deserves to earn the dollar, is doing [...]

Multi-instrumentalist Catherine A.D. will be releasing a limited edition EP in February 2009 ahead of her noir-pop debut album, which is currently being produced by Bernard Butler (Suede, Duffy, The Cribs) and Liam Howe (Sneaker Pimps). Describing her Patrick Wolf/Kate Bush-inspired confessionalism as "pirate radio for the heartbreak", Catherine's music doesn't just quiver under the covers like the recent slew of female singer-songwriters. Instead Miss A.D. packs the life-affirming epic punch of Nick Cave, Jeff Buckley and The National alongside her softer moments that showcase a voice which even Courtney Love has described as "gorgeous sick beautiful". [...]

grammatics.co.uk Drowned In Sound continues to peek ahead to the new year with a list of ten acts that their writers think the world will be all agog about in 2009. I can personally endorse Mumford & Sons , whom I saw in October , and Sky Larkin , whom I've not seen but like what I've heard . Presumably there's an album in the works for the former and The Golden Spike , the debut from the latter, is due out in February. I also [...]

Haunting yet charming, powerful yet delicate. The brilliant voice of London's Catherine A. D., songstress and multi-instrumentalist Catherine Anne Davies. Her debut EP, The Bedroom Sessions EP, has recently been released as digital downloads, with the complete CD package to follow. I'm not going to let my limited vocabulary try and describe her voice, there's no way I could do it justice. Simply put, her music and style will envelope you from the inside out. Her terrific band includes Matthew T. R. Percival (guitars & e-bow), Tim R. Bowen (cello), Ella Baruch (viola) and Jonathan C. Rogers (drums & percussion), [...]

Since we already started recapping 2008 , might as well start looking to 2009 for some new music. First up is Erin McCarley. Her song Pony (It's Okay) has been featured on The Spectrum all summer long. The darn thing is the second best feel-good song of the year (the first being this one ). Her debut alum hits shelves in early 2009. Stream: Erin McCarley ∞ Pony (It's Okay) Or go to her website [...]

Catherine A.D. - Carry Your Heart Comparisons to Tori Amos and Kate Bush are good, but Catherine A.D. sounds more like k.d. lang 's spooky kid sister. That is to say, this song is beautiful. Random Fact: Liam Howe is handling some of Ms. Davies' production. Nice.

There is something delicously dark about Catherine AD. She was introduced to me by her representative and he recommended her on the basis that I love Laura Marling. The sound is on a much grander scale that Ms Marling, and more comparative to the dark side of a stripped down Patrick Wolf. It's good. Enjoy the track. Carry Your Heart - Catherine A.D.
