On May 1st the Alhambra Theater (formerly Mt. Tabor Theater) will be celebrating their hundredth year as a Portland venue. To commemorate the occasion they are throwing a five day music festival featuring the talent of Red Fang, Y La Bamba, Black Prairie and over a dozen more. For the second day of the festival The Deli Portland and Eleven Magazine worked together to put together a special showcase featuring 8 of the best bands our city has to offer. Social Studies , Hustle and Drone , Glassbones and Pheasant [...]

A chance encounter with Asheville bluegrass quintet Town Mountain and their twangy, countrified cover of I'm On Fire at this weekend's Joe Val Bluegrass Festival - a dark and yet surprisingly charming version of the Bruce Springsteen classic song that chugs along like a train through the psyche - reminded me how deeply this particular classic is embedded in our national songbook. And a check back at our own archives confirms it: in the last twelve months alone, we've posted no less than four separate covers of the song, from Shakey Graves ' bedraggled [...]

The results are in from the Open Submissions stage for our Portland Year End Poll for Emerging Artists. All of the submissions were ranked by Deli Editors from other scenes and the list of acts that have advanced to our Readers'/Fans' Poll phase are below. We will also be releasing the list of nominees chosen by our local "scene expert" jurors very soon. We would like to thank all of the talented artists who submitted. It was our largest Open Submissions pool yet, and certainly a testament to how many rad acts we [...]

Catherine Feeny 's songs are entrancing. Between the ethereal quality of her voice and the dreamlike sensations evoked by intricacies of her compositions it's easy to get lost in thought while listening. You can hear a passion behind her experimental pop songs that carries with it both nostalgia and innovation and for this reason there's no doubt in my mind that 2013 will be a successful year for her. In the past year, The Lower 48 have built a significant amount of momentum in Portland's music scene and for good reason. Their music is rich with soothing vocal harmonies, tight instrumentation and a captivating presentation that has been winning over audiences at some of the city's most prominent venues. Their folk pop gems are sure to build them a place among the most recognized acts in Portland over the course of the next year. <a href=" http://thelower48.bandcamp.com /album/where-all-maps-end"& ;gt;Where All Maps End by The Lower 48</a>

The trouble with acoustic covers of popular songs is that some earnest singer armed with a guitar will slow down Jingle Bells and whisper the lyrics as if they have a deep meaning. I have no principles that compel me to disallow the notion of whispering songstresses, but on this Christmas mix I’ve tried to keep them to a respectful minimum. Still, we have the doses of yuletide angst which the acoustic genre prescribes to go with the upbeat welcome of the merry season. Don’t be alarmed by the inclusion of three tracks called Christmas Song: they are [...]

Summer is over... yeah, I know we have about two weeks before it's over on the calendar, but school has started, I am working my tail off, and Labor Day weekend is just about over. Thank goodness for football. Did you see that ECU Hail Mary? Maybe you should: A good weekend for me as an alumnus of Penn State and an employee of East Carolina, I enjoyed my football weekend. Ahhh, but this blog is about music... ARE YOU READY FOR SOME BLOGOPHILIA??? [...]
WNET 13, NYC PBS has another great music block tonight. Live from the Artist's Den at 9:30pm features the UK's Corinne Bailey Rae, who as been nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize for her album The Sea. Sun Studio Sessions follows right after at 10:30pm and will feature Catherine Feeny a Philadelphia-born, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter whose music has been featured in the motion

I like Catherine Feeny! The Portland songwriter (a veteran of the Hotel Cafe tour, though you'd never know it from her other band, Come Gather Round Us ), is about as friendly, awesome and D.I.Y. singer-songwriter as you're likely to find in Portland (which is saying a lot). She played one of our Portland Makes Music showcases, and it just couldn't have gone more smoothly. I'm not a huge fan of this particular song of hers, truth be told. Her People in the Hole EP has some really great tunes [...]
Sorry for yesterday here are a bunch of fresh tunes, actually some might be old, but I am not concerned with recently CD releases except for Sarah Harmers. MP3: Sarah Harmer - Captive Captive is from her album that came out yesterday, Oh Little Fire . I have always liked her folky chick with a guitar thing. Good stuff. MP3: Club 8 - Western Hospitality While they sound nothing like super cheesy brit-pop/tv show band S Club 7, that is all I can think about when [...]

Sultry singer/songwriter Catherine Feeny , kicked to the curb by her London based record-label (Charisma/EMI) in '08, has carefully plotted her return to action with her forthcoming album People in the Hole . She recorded the album in England but decided to wait on its release when she moved to the States and set a foundation for herself in Portland OR. You may her know from The O.C. : her dainty tune "Mr. Blue", from her previous work, was featured on the show. However, Feeny lets her dark side loose on People in the Hole [...]
I found Catherine Feeny while sifting through BoomBoomChik's inbox and I've been listening to her latest release, People in the Hole, on repeat for two days. It's an album that invokes images of autumnal change, humility, and virtuosity The album contains the sounds of yesteryear (such as the song "He's Like You Only Better" and "You'd Better Run"), jazz songs played on guitar ("Bleeder"), Americana ("Junk Queen") and ballads that contain multitudes ("The Rest of Them"). Feeny feels like an old friend and sounds "like" so many artists that in fact she sounds like none of [...]

In 2008, Catherine Feeny drove 12,000 miles with her husband-to-be in a 1990 Mazda 323 called Swansong, playing more than 40 planned and impromptu shows in dens, living rooms and gardens all over the United States. She had just been dropped by her London-based record label and the situation called for radical action. " It was a break-up ," says Feeny. " I felt like I'd been kicked in the stomach, but at the same time, like I'd been set free. That tour helped me reclaim myself. " Settling in Portland, Feeny, who had [...]

It took me a couple of listens to completely get into it, but then Catherine Feeny's third album People In The Hole isn't something that wears out quickly. To the contrary - it grew greatly during the first couple of spins and soon I was discovering little nuances I didn't notice before, making me appreciate the songs even more. It's a very mellow singer/songwriter record - Feeny has a voice clear as crystal and the songs have folk-pop sound that manages to stay sincere all the way through. It is also a bit of a comeback [...]
This weekend finally sees the first music festival of the season, the young but promising Winter Music Festival, popping up at venues all over town. Check out at least one of those shows this week so that SF Indie and Talking House Records feel your love. Plus, you'll be supporting local music more than once [...]
Talent is one thing. Fortitude is another. In the insanely upside-down music biz an artist usually needs a healthy shot of each to succeed. Fortunately for us, L.A.-to-London-to-Portland, OR performing songwriter Catherine Feeny has an abundance of both. New third album People In The Hole , recently self-released, should be the successful second release via major label but, well...we've seen how that can go. Signed to EMI in the U.K., dropped as another victim in the changing of the executive guard, Feeny decided to go it alone. People, recorded in London this past year with [...]

I'm going to avoid the incandescent love stories and get straight to the point. Today, September 25th, marks our two-year anniversary. Yes, everything is celebrated here. A lot of laughs were shared and fortunately enough, we rarely ever waltzed with sadness. This has been, in fact, the happiest two years of my life. While I'm still unsure who wears the pants, I find myself in a completely balanced relationship and we're continuing to grow... always closer, never apart. This is a collection of songs I put together that... if not scream "I love you!"... provoke a certain level of emotions [...]
