Catherine MacLellan - Steeped in backwoods blues, inspired retro jazzy pop and sparse country/folk, the fourth album from Halifax, Nova Scotia singer/songwriter has an appealing directness and honesty to complement her confessional, sometimes brutal lyrical content... behind the sweetly beguiling voice are some dark truths and intimate tales waiting to be heard...new album, released this past summer in Canada, finally arrives stateside next week // Release : Silhouette (September 13, True North) // Sounds like : there's something in the water up north that brings out the straightforward, intelligent and irony-free to this [...]

Catherine MacLellan's new album Silhouette is released through one of my favourite labels True North Records who are home not only to Catherine but a trio of favourite Canadian artists Lynn Miles, The Wailin' Jennys and Madison Violet, the bulk of the album was largely recorded in a remote cabin on her native Prince Edward Island (where the video below was shot) in a rural location with a collective of long-time friends and cohorts, the album features fourteen tracks in all, thirteen original songs from Catherine and a recording of a track written by her late [...]

Canadian songwriter Catherine MacLellan sporadically ratchets up the folk/pop of her earlier, more acoustic works on her latest album Silhouette -- and latest single and video "Stealin'" exemplifies that new plugged-in aesthetic. Chiming guitar riffs and solid backbeat kick are the order on a track MacLellan describes as "an upbeat number about not cheating." As we said in our preview of Silhouette, "there's something in the water up north that brings out the straightforward, intelligent and irony-free to this completely engaging collection of starkly gorgeous songs." More DC here [...]

In this week's ReviewShine feature, I spotlighted Amelia Curran and Dala, two artists who were recently honored at the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Awards in December. Today, I'd like to take a look back at two favorites of mine who were honored at the 2009 CFMA's. Catherine MacLellan was the Solo Artist of the Year in 2009. Here are a couple of videos of unreleased MacLellan songs from the wonderful Music Fog blog. I also have a couple of videos [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Exclusive Imagine the voice of an angel, swathed in the red plaid and dark denim of a lumberjack. Imagine being a songwriting legacy, and losing a father. Imagine the soul of the gardener who lives in wintry Canada. This is singer-songwriter Catherine MacLellan. Describe your sound in your own words. Pretty mellow, original singer-songwriter in the folk and country realm. You're a solo artist; how did you get started? [...]

Filed under: News , Canada Joel Plaskett swept the East Coast Music Awards stage in a multiple of threes as the iconic rocker's triple-disc album 'Three' earned him six ECMA awards out of his leading eight nominations. The awards ceremony in Sydney, Nova Scotia was the culmination of a four-day music event showcasing the musical talent of Canada's east coast. Buyers, music consultants and other industry agents converged from as far away as Australia, Los Angeles and Nashville -- making the ECMAs to Sydney what [...]

As I promised on Saturday... Today begins a week of posts dedicated to the growing number of talented Americana artists coming to us from north of the border. As these are Canadian artists playing what we in the States call Americana Music... I'm dubbing this "Canadiana Week." We start the week with an artist who has been quite active on the awards circuit lately... Catherine MacLellan. The Prince Edward Island native recently took home four trophies at the Music P.E.I. Awards (Songwriter, Female Vocalist, Folk Recording, and Album of [...]

Just so you know, in honor of Wilco's new album, I have renamed this blog to "Late Greats (The Blog)". (photo by Patrick Nichols) I've been a fan of Catherine MacLellan since I received her song "Emily's Song" via email back in 2008. She has a new double album out "Water In The Ground / Dark Dream Midnight". A magnum opus of Canadian folk music. In the 22 songs, there is definitely something for everyone. Listen: Catherine [...]

Despite the countless releases and multiple PR companies running with her sophomore album, Catherine MacLellan still remains one of the understated and under appreciated talents of the East Coast scene. I know I'm not exactly a crucial cog when it comes to driving musical popularity, but the simple intimacy that MacLellan presents with her as pure as fresh snow voice makes it shocking that her songs aren't a staple on at least one of the CBC iterations that work so hard to showcase Canadian talent. Hopefully, Water in the Ground is the tipping point [...]

Time again for a few quick notes and a few new tunes... *** First of all, I'd like to mention a new live concert series that is starting up in Knoxville in July. "Old City Live" kicks off Thursday night July 2nd in an area of downtown Knoxville called The Old City and is completely free to attend. The first show will feature J.C. and the Dirty Smokers along with Mic Harrison and the High Score and takes place one week after the final 2009 installment [...]
