Prince Edward Island singer/songwriter Catherine MacLellan returns June 2 for her third outing with Water In the Ground , an album filled with graceful folk melodies, a sparse and spacious intimacy and MacLellan's lovely, warm and lustrous voice. Brighter and a little less delicate than her last album, 2007's gorgeous, dark and confessional Church Bell Blues , this new 12-song collection shows off a purposeful fuller sound: "" Church Bell was mostly me," she admits, "(and) I wanted to make a band album and that's [...]

I think that I mentioned at some point last week that I had fallen into a TON of new music. Which is true. But I am just now getting around to sharing said music. First up - Canadian singer/songwriter Catherine MaClellan and her lovely album 'Church Bell Blues.' An album filled with beautiful music and heartfelt lyrics...she reminds me SO much of Gillian Welch. Here is my favorite track from the album...I love the words, and I love the steel pedal guitar. "Love never finds you when you want it too" [...]
In November, Womenfolk was invited to become a contributor to Star Maker Machine , a popular music blog many of you are probably already familiar with. But for those who aren't, Star Maker Machine consists of over a dozen regular writers, most of whom also maintain their individual blogs. Every week, the blog's moderator ( Cover Lay Down 's very own Boyhowdy) announces a new theme and all of the posts within that week are devoted to the announced theme. The themes vary and can often times, be very challenging. But the best part about [...]

Catherine MacLellan: Snow Day [ purchase ] Catherine MacLellan is a wonderful folk singer who's sophomore album, Church Bell Blues , was released earlier this year. Most of the songs found here are generally unadorned; simplisticically sweet folk songs. Just a guitar or two, a beautifully pure voice and little else. Perfect for this week's theme is of course her song, "Snow Day," which is also coincidentally, one of my favorites. It illustrates how easily a song can paint a picture. I can envision [...]

web site :: myspace It's obvious that herohill doesn't really act as the voice of the people... well unless there aren't very many people left in the world and the remaining few only listen to Golden Age hip hop, gritty blues, folk and love the banjo. But even without VIP status, I'm pretty shocked that more people didn't fall in love with PEI's Catherine MacLellan last year . You might remember that last year Naedoo got a hold of her record - Church Bell Blues [...]

photo: Chris Smith Catherine MacLellan has been slowly building her reputation as a folk singer. Her self-released 2007 album Church Bell Blues gets a well deserved second change through a re-release by a "real" record label. She an introspective soft spoken singer, but she has s a sharp look out on live. She has been compared with Joni Mitchell, but she is more down to earth. Her lyrics aim for your heart and your guts. Comes with cool mandolin picking by James Philips. [...]

You may not be aware, but Halifax has some fantastic female singer-songwriters on the scene right now. Jill Barber, Jenn Grant, Rose Cousins, Erin Costello, and Meaghan Smith are a few of the names that come to mind (there are certainly others, please send any I missed), and you can certainly add Catherine MacLellan to that list. Catherine is originally from PEI, but now calls Halifax home when she isn't on the road. Her latest album, Church Bell Blues , was released to much acclaim on the east coast in 2006 (four PEI music awards, ECMA [...]
