It's been 18 months since Cathy Davey has graced a Dublin venue with her presence, and tonight marks the beginning of a three date residency at Whelan's. One of the forthcoming shows is to be a reprise of Davey's 2008 Fringe Festival show Songs That Scare Children , the other a celebration of her favourite artists of decades gone by – but tonight's show is all about the woman herself, delving into her back catalogue to perform the best of her own material albums to date. It's a shaky start with 'Habit' and 'Reuben', the band hit [...]

Dubliner Cathy Davey is a captivating and charming singer/songwriter. Her bold bubbly melodies and sweet breathy voice are a magnetic combination that will prompt you to bob and skip down the sidewalk - or at least stand a little taller. Davey's third album The Nameless is out now via Hammer Toe Records. Watch the quirky animated video for "Little Red" (in which she won an Irish Music TV Video Award) where Davey plays Red Riding Hood singing to the [...]

The Nameless is Cathy's third album. Cathy was born in Dublin, and grew up in Monkstown. She found her way into music almost accidentally. She was signed by Parlophone's Regal Recordings after a batch of home-recorded demos caused a bit of a stir, and played her first live date shortly thereafter. Spirited away to a studio in Wales, she set to work on her debut album with producer Ben Hillier, who'd previously worked with Elbow and Blur. The result, Something Ilk , was a gorgeous collection of songs both sultry and sweet, with melodies that soared and guitars [...]
The Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon and friends cover Vampire Weekend's self-titled debut album for the JD Set.

Picking Vampire Weekend 's self-titled debut as the subject of this unique JD Set concert was another example of Neil Hannon's playful brilliance. Bowie, Scott Walker or XTC all could have been in line for the covers treatment but he chose a recent classic that no one would object to hearing a supergroup of the finest musicians interpret. And so it was that flanked by red velvet drapes and beneath a chandelier, Hannon (keys, quips), Cathy Davey (percussion, autoharp), Richie "Jape" Egan (bass) and Romeo Stodart of The Magic Numbers (guitar) delivered an impeccable and [...]

Today, in honour of International Women's Day, Rarities pays tribute to a handful of its favourite female singer-songwriters. International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. It honours the work of the Suffragettes (those who campaigned for women's right to vote), celebrates women's success, and reminds the world of inequities that still need to be redressed. It's getting so you know Choice Music Prize season is upon us. Beards are stroked down to a thin stubble as the very nature of awards ceremonies is pondered aloud. You may spot some of the nominated artists on your travels around our capital looking tidy and pleased with themselves. If all this wasn't unsettling enough, ten of the best Irish LP's of the preceding 12 months are being valued in terms of bookies odds. Nine of these ten hopefuls running in the 19.30 at Vicar St are here tonight to be inspected and heard in [...]

It's been over two months since I had the time to properly turn my attention to writing about music, or felt the need to. I've been busy, to put it bluntly. I have a job I like, at a great company, and one that allows for certain amazing things to happen from time to time, as I will describe here, soon enough. But anyway, enough of that, and less of that other stuff, and more talk of music. There are less songs here than in previous years, which I think means I wasn't all that impressed with 2010. [...]
