This week has been the longest cold snap Ireland has been through in a long time. The warm southerly air from the mid-Atlantic drift tends to ensure Ireland has a moderate Winter. This last week has been crisp and cold. It has been very different and I'm loving it. Here are some nice pre-Christmas wintery tales! Remember to support the artists if you like anything you hear. Also tell me what you found was good in the comments section! Ash - Dark and Stormy Mp3 MySpace Prenup - Cold Wind [...]

You may not have heard, since this is all rather low-key, but Cathy Davey and her friends are on tour again, taking in the little nooks and crannies of the country that rarely get a gig. Think intimate venues, three people, and possibly candlelight. Were I still in the country, I'd be trying to get to as many of these as possible, but should they be too far afield, there's still a few big-size gigs at the end to draw you out into the cold before the end of the year. Cathy Davey - Hoochie [...]

This mix will be a regular feature of the blog where I will be posting a mix of 7 mp3s with a common theme. It is copied from the sister blog mixtape4melfi.blogspot.com. Yet another winter gig. Tonnes of them. Luckily my new house is on the nightlink bus routes! Cathy Davey will play Dublin's Tripod on December 22nd. Tickets cost €24.50 and €28, and go on sale this Wednesday (October 1st - it's October already. My God!) Check out her MySpace here: www.myspace.com/cathydavey Watch 'Cold Man's Nightmare':
Irish singer-songwriter and former Damien Rice cohort Lisa Hannigan will release her debut solo album entitled Sea Sew on September 12th. I haven't received a copy of the album yet, but following is a free and legal download of the first single from Lisa's album. "Lille" is a beautiful ballad embellished with harmonium, glockenspiel, and pizzicato strings with backing vocals from Irish singer Cathy Davey. Lisa Hannigan - Lille (mp3) The above mp3 on my server will be removed in two weeks, after that you can hear [...]

The Ruby Sessions , as you may know, is a regular acoustic night upstairs in Doyles on College Green which showcases some of the best Irish and International performers in an intimate setting. Today it's celebrating its 9th birthday, and to celebrate is boasting an extra-special lineup of Cathy Davey , Lisa Hannigan , One Day International , and Gavin Glass & The Holy Shakers . Not too shabby for 6 euros.... It starts at 9 O'Clock, but if you're interested I'd recommend getting there early enough as it'll probably be jammers. [...]

Tonight sees the ninth birthday of The Ruby Sessions in Doyles, College Green with very special guests Cathy Davey , Lisa Hannigan , One Day International and Gavin Glass & The Holy Shakers. Entry is just €6 and starts at 9pm.

I thought it was about time that I wrote about one of Ireland's best known secrets, Miss Cathy Davey . I've been a fan of her music since I first received a promotional copy of Autamata's ' Jellyman ' over four years ago. That was followed by a quick search on google only to find a four track solo ep was on the way. Since then we've had two great albums, ' Something Ilk ' and ' Tales of Silversleeve '. Cathy's most recent album ' Tales of Silversleeve ' received its Irish [...]
Given its status and its undoubted potential to lift a band's profile far beyond their own fans it seems a bit odd that so few of the Irish acts appearing at SXSW have promo tracks floating around. So despite an exhaustive search I failed to locate anything by Fight Like Apes, Channel One or Iain Archer (or even short arse Paddy Casey for that matter). Very little green on the torrent (SXSW and

There were only ever four real contenders for this once the voting started. The top four albums below trail-blazed from day one and the others all languished behind. This year almost 200 of you voted for 61 different Irish albums with 354 votes counted in total. That's three more albums than last year. This blogs championing of the number one album below has left me in a slightly awkward position but perhaps it was inevitable. No doubt, there will be a few cynics who discount the results as a canard but this was a public poll [...]

This post is all about sugar and spice. Two ladies making incredible music - one so sweet, and the other with some sass. First up, from Dublin, Ireland, CATHY DAVEY . WOW! A voice like an angel and some spunk and a sense of pure fun for a change. I was instantly taken by " Reuben ", a song that can pick up your day if you can turn it up loud enough. Then slide into " Sing For Your Supper " [...]

Boy, there's nothing like an impending visit from an out-of-town relative to make you realize just how freaking dirty your house actually is. The thought of grandma peering into my laundry room, not to mention the hall closet or the inside of the refrigerator, was enough to make me want to hang my head in shame and throw me into a cleaning frenzy. And the family--my ever-loving family--jumped in and helped like never before. We got the whole family room cleaned and decorated for Christmas in one day--and I'm talking about hardcore dusting and [...]

Dubliner Cathy Davey's sophomore release Tales of Silversleeve sounds very much in the same vein as fellow countrywoman KT Tunstall's Drastic Fantastic . It's quite rare these days to wade through the crap that is standard fill for today's female singer-songwriters. I've said this before, so I won't belabor the point; I'd much rather like to embellish in this incredible effort from Davey. Tales of Silversleeve showcases Davey's infectious vocals; playful but serious, cute but piercing at the same time, Davey uses her voice as an effective instrument throughout the [...]

Sorry Dundalk, but that's just the way it's got to be. Have a radio session instead. It's very nice. Sunny Afternoon (The Kinks) Cold Man's Nightmare (acoustic)

Cathy Davey - Hoochie (demo) According to my computer, I first heard this song a little over a year ago, and somehow, against all likelihood, managed to lose it - until one day last week that bassline decided to show up again unannounced, and started my foot tapping, and that chorus nagged and nagged until I remembered its name, and soon I wasn't the only one singing it from memory. Eventually, and after much searching, we tracked the song down, and here it is. Don't let the fact that it's a demo fool you, this is [...]
I usually do this when I'm feeling lazy, which I suppose I am, but in my defense, sometimes there's just so much fantastic stuff out there that I want to point it out so that you don't miss it. The internets is a big, big place, you know? So, continuing in the covers vein of late, copy, right? has a great selection of covers up right here , including the Future Kings of Spain's version of Todd Rundgren's "Love of the [...]

Essie Jain - "Indefinable". If you slow a diamond enough, slow it right down, you begin to see a different glitter: there, beneath the prettty, something sad and beautiful and smelling of coal. On her album Essie Jain seems drawn to both the nice and the weird (both of which can be traps), but here she's found something perfect, flickering, and slow, slow, slow. There's a desolation to the song, a stillness that recalls the earliest (spooky) work of Kathryn Williams, and Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek". Just Jain singing to the mines, tides, a doomed love. It's not those [...]
This is the same Cathy Davey mentioned in the Autamata post of a couple of days ago. The same CD who appeared on Elbow's 'Grace Under Pressure' (from their middle album 'A Cast of Thousands') and the same Dublin lass who has shared a stage with ace troubadour's Willy Mason and David Kitt. While Davey admits to dreading the whole experience of standing on a stage in front of hundreds of adoring
