When you list famous musical cities it's unlikely that the words Portsmouth or Southsea will crop up. Too close to London and lacking the artistic bond of Brighton, Portsmouth has always been the UK's south-central second rate cousin in terms of music. Portsmouth may possess a small but thriving grassroots scene, the hub of which is Southsea's Albert Road area, but the size of the place, the lack of quality small music venues (the Wedgewood Rooms excepted), combined with the lack of vision and entrepreneurial foresight of many (but not all) local bands and promoters means that Portsmouth often exists [...]
Too Hip To Be Square has been invited to host the upstairs bar of The Queen Of Hoxton on Friday 26th March by our good friends at Best Laid Plans . Collectively we will take over the entire venue bringing you a stella line up of some of the UK's hottest up-and-coming bands and electronic beats across 2 floors with full DJ bill, live band room, plus short films in the Best Laid Plans cinema. We've managed to secure an exclusive London date from shouty knob twiddling mancunians Cats In Paris , who'll [...]

After getting to grips with embedding files, it is only right that Pigeon Playlist got the treatment, as well as making the individual files available for anyone who doesn't want them all on their computer. anyway, it's about time to be thinking of edition number 2, get in contact either at mbritton2@gmail.com or by the form on the contact page above: 1 Run Toto Run - Platic Gold ( fileden ) They've been featured on blogs the world [...]

MP3: Abe Vigoda - Don't Lie from Reviver EP (2009) MP3: Cats In Paris - Get Out Of Jail Free Card Dave again. I'll handle the account of our trip up to the Midlands since I spent a good many months nestled in Central England a few years ago. First off-our Saturday night support slot in Nottingham : Wallpaper eating Nathan in Brighton [...]

Well, after a bit of a lull last week there's all sorts of crap going on in and around Edinburgh this week, so choose wisely because trying to attend everything could just be the end of you. As well as the usual recommendations there are a couple of half-recommendations this week; gigs I feel I should want to go to, but am actually not that fussed about. Crystal Antlers (I mean, come on, they have Crystal in their name, they have to be good, almost as guaranteed as having Fuck in your name last year, or Bear the [...]

Much excitement at L'Amour Electronique HQ. In a few days we head to Paris to see l'Exposition Gainsbourg at the Cité de la Musique . [...]

Mancunians Cats In Paris released their debut album 'Courtcase 2000' about a couple of months ago, giving me plenty of time to buy it, listen to it then tell you all about it. Unsurprisingly, I failed to complete any of the above. Admittedly, the question has to be asked - why have they released their debut album already? I'm sure they haven't been touring that much and with only one single and little radio play behind them, it seems a little premature. But maybe the album is just that good, Akoustik Anarkhy [...]

Animal Collectives 07 album, Strawberry Jam, was a strong contender for my album of the year. That and drummer Panda Bear's solo album, Person Pitch. So its no surprise I got really excited hearing news of a new AC album early 09. Named 'Merriweather Post Pavilion', the album features some really trippy artwork (above). Tracklisting: 1. "In the Flowers" 2. "My Girls" 3. "Also Frightened" 4. "Summertime Clothes" 5. "Daily Routine" 6. "Bluish" 7. "Guys Eyes" 8. "Taste" 9. "Lion in a Coma" 10. "No [...]

AUGUST: A Summary... words: Jamie Milton This August we had the final batch of our summer festivals, the Olympic Games (triumph for the Brits, big surprise to say the least) and the Democratic Convention, as well as the unveiling of to me, of the most frightening women in the world, Sarah Palin. But whilst I try to forgot about her evil views on global warming, I'll give you a short-ish summary of what purchases you should have invested in by now, just [...]

It feels odd that this is my first festival review on funfunfun. I w ent to Reading for six consecutive years in my teens but since starting this blog my summer's have been barren. I wouldn't have gone to Green Man if it weren't my brother, Joss. He's been working at festivals for the last two summers and with his position at Green Man he was given a +1, which he generously offered to me. I snapped it up in an instant. For his kindness i thought i'd give him, and his girlfriend [...]

You know how they were going on about Manchester like "rising again" and such with The Courteeners and The Ting Tings and that? Well, the whole time, I just wanted to hit people who wrote about Manchester in the context of bands like that and shove Cats In Paris in their ears. Cats In Paris are, firstly, the sound of the actual Manchester I inhabit- a Manchester by no means dominated by either major record labels or indeed Mancunians. Cats In Paris themselves can often be seen huddled together grinning at various gigs and clubnights. Even before I [...]
Cats In Paris make music that could perhaps be classified as epic-twee-prog-electro-pop (is that a super-oxymoron, or what?). I first heard them doing a session on Marc Riley's 6Music show a couple of weeks ago, and it's taken me until now to track something down (I lead a busy life, don't you know). They seem to come from Manchester, and have released some stuff on Akoustik Anarkhy . They remind me a little of Pram and a lot of Gorky's . Ladies and gentlemen, the oxymoronic [...]

More great new sounds from the UK. After a fair few years of playing second fiddle to the rest of the world britain seems to be putting down it's playstations picking up it's guitars and shouting "Right You Bastards!!!". Really if people could only be bothered to get their lazy arses off their couches and actually have a look around they would see that the UK music scene is more exiting now than at any point in the last fifteen years. This is the debut single from Cats In Paris who might come from Manchester or not as the case [...]

Cats in Paris are just about my favorite of the new breed of Manchester bands. Their schizophrenic arrangements take in a number of different influences that defy categorization. Think a Proggy Talking Heads taking a bath with Muse and your still nowhere close. Check them out live- Loads of good, solid Freak outs. Got loads of live dates coming up, have a look at their Myspace for details. Their debut single 'Foxes' is available on the Akoustik Anarkhy label. Cats in Paris- Foxes [...]

CATS IN PARIS : MP3: Foxes Dystopic, spirraling, and about as close as " hardcore/ experimental/ folk " could get to indie-pop. No teasing: the drums ride up front, whilst electronics and bleeps keep everyone awake all through the night. Foxes has chapters you race through, fluidity that unsettles you, a rhythmic anger powered through the proper channels and god-damned interestingness (an elusive beast). Best of April? It's very very likely. myspace.com/catsinparis ********** The competition for a [...]
