Jangle-pop could be my Achilles' heel, and Austin, Texas band Literature 's new album is like an arrow to my foot. You may remember their Cincinnati 7-inch single from 2010 which was three songs of the jangly stuff. Arab Spring is their first full length and they are obviously up to the task of keeping your attention for the length of an album. Every one of its 10 songs is an adrenalin rush with pop hook. There are so many good ones, I'm partial to the hyper manic Push Up Bra and Criminal Kids and the slightly more restrained [...]

It's time to look back and reflect again. What were we listening to one year ago? Listen to The May 2009 Mix ... Downloadables: I Want You To Know (mp3) by Dinosaur Jr. December (mp3) by Pterodactyl Roses In The Park (mp3) by Liechtenstein You Lose (mp3) by Cause Co-Motion! (click image to enlarge) Above we see Brooklyn quartet Cause Co-Motion having a slumber party. Cause Co-Motion! play sub-garage fuzz pop songs, rarely hitting the two minute mark. Last year Slumberland Records released It's Time: Singles and EPs 2005-2008 compiling 14 singles previously released by Cape Shok, What's Your Rupture?>, and Can't Cope. This year Cause [...]

In celebrating the 20th anniversary of Slumberland Records we contemplated listing the label's best albums as we've already done for Matador and Merge earlier this year, but we realized that Slumberland's tradition is built more on the 7" release than it is on the full album. Since they started the label has put out more 7" singles than anything else and they've all been a magnificent mix of styles and sounds. Bands as varied as caUSE co-MOTION! , Stereolab , the [...]

Der Katalog ist handverlesen (Velocity Girl, Stereolab, The Softies, Rocketship, The Lodger), aktuelle Aushängeschilder sind Crystal Stilts und The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. Letztere veröffentlichen nächste Woche eine neue EP mit dem Titel "Higher Than The Stars". Die EP enthält [...]

One of last year's best finds was Cause Co-Motion 's singles compilation. They're back with a 6 track EP and boy is it good. I know the amount of happy go-lucky jangly LA pop you can listen to is limited, and there's a whole bunch of good/crap coming out of that camp, but this 10 minute long EP has actual music to go with the noise-reverb drenched doodlings most bands offer these days. Sort of a noisier challenger to my heart's pop-punk throne which is held by the sadly demised Kung-Fu Monkeys , who I've now discovered to [...]

Let's continue our look back on this year and it's awesomeness (musically anyway). This time I went through the trouble of adding "buy" links, so if you find yourself listening to something on this list over and over fork some of your hard earned cashmoney, ok? And now the 2nd installment of the Best Downloadables Of 2009 ... Buried In The Nude (mp3) by Screaming Females ( buy cd or vinyl // buy mp3 ) Arming Eritrea (mp3) by Future [...]

While I won't get anywhere near this, the line-up looks ridiculous. Get a ticket ... Friday, July 3rd: Crystal Stilts , Psychedelic Horseshit , caUSE-co-MOTION! Saturday July 4th: Thee Oh Sees , Tyvek , Ganglians, the Beets

If you were lucky enough to get tickets for this show at Cake Shop tomorrow, well done. This is probably the last chance you'll ever have to see Pains of Being Pure At Heart at a venue as small and intimate as Cake Shop. I've recently seen both of the other bands at Cake Shop. Both are good, and will be even better in the exciting atmosphere that tomorrow's show will certainly materialize. A very, very exciting show. MP3: "This Love Is Fucking Right" - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart [...]

No need to feel like a second class NY-er for not going out of town for Independence Day this year. If you're around, might I suggest the Woodsist/Captured Tracks Festival ? Two of the city's best vinyl-centric labels (with help from Todd P) are bringing together some of the best garage/lo-fi/psychedelic bands in the country, playing over the course of two days. A combined two-day ticket is $25, but if you had to choose one day ($15) I think you'd have to go with July 4, what with Ganglians, Woods, Beets, Real Estate, Thee Oh Sees, Dum Dum Girls, [...]

Monday: So Cow + Free Energy @ The Bell House 7:30pm $5 I have yet to catch the wave on either of these much blogged about bands. So Cow - "To Do List" Free Energy - "Dream City" Tuesday: Jonathan Richman + Vic Chesnutt @ Bowery Ballroom 8pm $15 Two mainstays in the indie [...]

Cause Co-Motion This Brooklyn-based band specializes in short and sweet reverb-drenched 60's pop (couldn't really find a track over two minutes long), reminiscent of early Apples In Stereo but with a more world-weary, lo-fi approach. Cause Co-Motion - Only Fades Away ( mp3 )
