I've been contemplating doing something for Valentine's Day for years, and I finally settled on something good - a massive post packed with great singles from the past. Seems fitting, being the romantic holiday can be a bit alienating for the single person. Or that the seemingly comfy nature of the 7-inch single, with two (well, typically, with an occasional three or four) great songs placed back to back and stuffed in a typically well-designed sleeve, is a bit romantic in and of itself. So for the past few weeks, [...]

I bought way too many seven inch singles this year. I'm not trying to brag. It's a problem really. The seven inch is like crack to the record geek, a fleeting moment of pop perfection and then it's off to either flip the record or put on another one. This was a daunting task this year and I feel like I left out a lot of stuff, but a top 60 would have been too much and limiting it to 40 makes you have to really decide, what were your favorite [...]

Here is a lazy blogger's round-up of some of the new tracks that we've come across and enjoyed over the past few days and weeks, some of which might tickle your ears in a good way. The Moondoggies delivered a cracking album in 20082s Don't Be A Stranger and have a follow-up due in September titled Tidelands . In the meantime they are releasing a five track limited EP of songs that didn't make the new album, and which will mostly be sold on tour or via Hardly Art . This track [...]

So this is it, the second and final single from Albany, New York's Cave Weddings . How gone are they, well, they've deleted their myspace page, effectively draping a shroud of mystery around themselves. Last summer they came into my world with their single on HoZac and now this spring they leave it with their second single on Bachelor. I'm not exactly sure why the band has split, though I gather that it's because they no longer live in the same city. You can read and interview with Erin Dorbin at Kind Turkey for clues about their [...]

1. Sea Lions - Let's Groove ( Yay! ) The Sea Lions remind me of two things: I had a cassette of Surf Classics when I was a kid that got endless play through many snowy Ohio winters on my walkman. I vaguely remember what songs were on it, but more than anything I remember the sunny-warm vibe I would get from listening to it. The second thing they remind me of is 7 Seconds, well, more like the mellow younger brothers of 7 Seconds, a band that got me through my high school years. [...]

Here are a handful of songs I meant to post at one time or another. The first comes from the outstanding new Sunset album, Gold Dissovles to Gray, their best effort yet. Hit up the local Autobus label to get your hands on it. I tossed in another one from the new Atlas Sound album , also highly recommended, and a few random tracks that have graced my inbox recently. Follow the links if you like what you hear. Sunset - "Green Truck" [...]

Cave Weddings - "Bring Your Love" On the subject of the inter-mingling of the senses, I've heard much talk about the colour of music or the smell of a dream or a memory. If you're a reader here, you'll know that I am a strict separationist when it comes to the senses. Music can only be experienced aurally, painting is a completely silent aesthetic sensation, sex is a practice reserved only for touch. But I can't ignore this realization I'm having while listening to this song. I have to remind myself, sitting here aching and hungry, that [...]

The Cave Weddings - Bring Your Love This, however, is lo-fi and very, very catchy. I was once on a long Greyhound ride through upstate New York, stopping in Albany (where this three-piece are from), with mostly Amish men who preferred to sit alone in silence. If this tune had been stuck in my head, it would have made the journey a lot more fun. It's the perfect bust of energy to get the week going. You can buy this track as a 73 for $5 or their limited edition EP for $7 by [...]

Think this is actually our first mixtape in a while that doesn't have any particular theme attached to it. Strange Boys and Coathangers will be playing at the Lounge on Elm St. tonight, see if you can make it out there. Oh, we're in the works of setting up our mixtapes for podcasting. Any radio stations out there want to broadcast?? The Strange Boys - Heard You Wanna Beat Me Up Almighty Defenders - Bow Down and Die Mayfair Set - Junked! Cave Weddings - Bring [...]

The description on Sweet Rot's MySpace of the Shackles says "should please fans of Box Elders , Nodzzz , Brilliant Colors , etc." I say this single will more than please fans of those bands, it will keep you very close to your turntable, poised to flip it over and drop the needle again and again. This is the first release (if you don't count their song on the Funhouse comp), and it easily rivals last year's Box Elders 7 inch for sheer [...]
