Ruth Swanson Seeing San Francisco's Ty Segall at Halifax Pop Explosion 2010 was one of the most unexpectedly rowdy/violent shows I've ever been in the middle of, which was a bit surprising considering that as rough and garage-y as his stuff is, it's not all that heavy. Certainly not the obvious soundtrack for the bedlam that ensued that evening. Maybe it was just Halifax. Anyways, despite enjoying his music well enough, I've made a point of avoiding his shows as the odds of me getting kicked in the head seem to [...]
Listen to a sort-of supergroup featuring members of My Morning Jacket, Son Volt, Centro-Matic, and Varnaline put unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics to music.
There's quite a collection of Americana big dogs at work on this track: Former Uncle Tupelo co-leader and current Son Volt frontman Ja Farrar, My Morning Jacket main man Yim Yames (or, as most of us still know him, Jim James), Centro-matic leader Will Jonson, and Gob Iron guy Anders Parker, as well as the ghost of Woody Guthrie. I'm going to have to add so many tags to this post! Here's the story: Woody Guthrie's daughter Nora invited all these musicians to pick through Guthrie's notebooks of unrecorded songs, the same way Billy Bragg and Wilco did [...]

As we previously reported Anders Parker, Jay Farrar, Yim Yames and Will Johnson headed into the studio to record a new batch of Woody Guthrie songs (think Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue) which will be released on the album New Multitudes . Now that we received an album release date of February 28, a tour has been announced. It's unclear if this ensemble is going to get a name, if they are "New Multitudes" or they are simply going to be billed individually. Also unclear [...]
I found a lot of great music this month, more than I can (or wish to) fit on this playlist. I purposefully ignored everything I featured in this post , also all discovered this month and highly recommended (and ps, some of these songs come from the same sources). Shugo Tokumaru: Lahaha [via Rawkblog ] Centro-Matic: Only In My Double Mind [via Pop Headwound ] Jason Urick: The Crying Song (Album Mix) [...]

This year's list of favorites is fairly sedate (even for me), with just a little ruckus here and there. Lots of morning-coffee music, which I guess says something about my 2011. But music's strength is its pliability. It can be whatever you need it to be at the moment, especially when we have instant access to virtually any song ever recorded, often for free . Judging by this list, I needed music to be a salve more than a release valve this year. I also never expected my favorite album to come from someone who held the [...]

Frank Yang In discussing the latest St. Vincent album Strange Mercy , I mentioned that Annie Clark's greatest strength as a songwriter was her creative restlessness; a trait which has over the course of her relatively short career already taken her to more interesting places than some artists even conceive of visiting. If we turn our attention to her live show, that title of "most appropriate single adjective" would probably have to be "control". Just as she has a very specific idea of how her [...]

Just some recent songs I took a bit of a fancy to. Siskiyou travels to Bonnie Billy country, Haroula Rose does the folky duet thing very well, and High On Stress sure digs the Mats a lot. Widowspeak dreams back to the indie eighties, Wounded Lion plays barbwire pop with a delightful chorus (" LVXLCDM " anyone?), while Centro-matic fondly remembers the Mary Chain. Broaden that musical horizon why don't you, pop kids. Siskiyou - Dear Old Friends Haroula Rose - Free To Be Me [...]
Oh man, is 2011 over already? It is indeed, which means End of Year list time! Of course, that means it's time for you to tell us where we went wrong, but on this list, we're thinking we got it pretty right on. You'll notice we expanded our list to a Top 15 of Texas Artists, as we thought our state did a great job, musically (not politically) speaking this year. I'll admit, it might be a little Austin-centric, but we're based in the town, so get word a lot faster. Apologies to Houston and San Antonio, as your scenes [...]

well, here it is the unofficial captains dead top 14 of the year list. i say unofficial because as there are a few more contributors lurking about, they may have their own top whatever list, and i hope they share said list with the class. not much has changed since i did my premature list back a few months ago. at least in the top 5/6 department. i went through the site and re-listened to everything i had tagged as "best of 20113 and after listening to these records, some changes definitely needed to be made. most notably the inclusion [...]

You can't dig too deep into the North Texas music scene without hearing the name Centro-Matic. The band's prolific lead singer, Will Johnson, has saturated the last decade with releases from Cent... Continue reading "Giveaway: One Pair of Tickets to See Centro-Matic, Spooky Folk at Dada Tomorrow" >
The versatile Will Johnson finds himself in a hard-driving, Centro-Matic phase these daysWill Johnson is a songwriter who works in bursts. He's also a songwriter who keeps multiple bands and projects alive at the same time.So what makes a song a Centro-Matic song?"I will get into certain sounds or certain type of songs for a stretch," he says. "These days, I'm writing more hard-driving music.

One of my favorite songs of the year is "Iso Residue" by Centro-Matic off their album Candidate Waltz . Will Johnson just released a video where he performs the song live and acoustic and Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio. It's a real nice alternate take of the track and very nice video production. Catch the band on the road in November: 10 - Kansas City MO - Record Bar 12 - Denver CO - High Dive 13 - Durango CO - Abbey Theatre 15 - Salt Lake City UT [...]
As far as collaborations go, it's hard to imagine that Centro-Matic's Will Johnson would be able to top his stint in Monsters Of Folk, with whom he backed up Conner Oberst, Jim James, M. Ward a... "It was the merging of everything we wanted, an album full of melodic guitar pop that sounded like it was pasted together on late nights of heavy drinking with friends."
