The problem with lists is you always forget obvious entries. I drafted up a best-of-2006 so far list, and somehow forgot to include Centro-matic’s Fort Recovery release. It’s easy to justify the omission. This isn’t an the type of album that will grab you right away, and that is probably because this is the first album that combines all of Will Johnson’s many personas. A seasoned songwriting veteran, Johnson’s side projects (the poppier sounds of the fantastic South San Gabriel and his solo work) often allow him to focus [...]
I love those songs that just wrap around you like a big fluffy blanket. Those ones that seem to block out the rain, the dark, and basically everything but the big fluffy happiness that inevitably comes with said blanket. I hope that you guys like those feelings as well because, without a doubt, that's how today's artist is going to make you feel. Centro-matic is the vehicle of Denton, TX's singer/songwriter Will Johnson. The band only started up around 1995 but they've managed to put together an amazingly prolific body of work in [...]
My introduction to Will Johnson of Centro-Matic was when he toured with Dave Bazan, Vic Chesnutt, and Mark Eitzel as Undertow Orchestra; man, that was a brilliant show. Those guys had it together. I went out and got Love You Just the Same , and I've run across some South San Gabriel songs here and there--partially in the eMusic Misra sampler. This song has got to be the stickiest--it's perpetually making itself an earworm. The jagged guitars and smartly mechanical percussion just keep lodging themselves in my phonological loop; which is to [...]
Oh, webgoers. This has already been an exhausting week, and it has included good things like interviewing the awesome Mark Mallman, and not-so-awesome things, like realizing I can't yet sell my car after all, because it doesn't have a Minnesota...

Centro-matic released their latest, Fort Recovery, on June 06 (Misra Records). Offering twelve tracks, the new album comes out nearly a decade to the day that the band released their debut, Redo the Stacks. Boasting fuzzy guitars and Will Johnson's ragged voice... the band deliver's gut level music with literate lyrics. centro-matic + calling thermatico the hair + ghosts the hair + jigsaw

Goddamn soccer is amazing. So I figure I'll post about 20 songs or so (enough for a CD-R) and we'll see how this goes. There have been tons of great songs this year and I'd like to hold off on ranking them until December rolls around, mostly because the thought of pitting "The Greatest" against "Crazy" blows my mind. So here's the first part (of three) of my favorite songs of 2006 thus far. Don't forget to check out some 2005 tracks in the Half-time introduction . Band of Horses - [...]
March easily trumps the first couple months of the year, so we'll do this in a pair of installments because I don't want to shortchange anybody. I recommend buying any album direct from the label, but you can always get them at an online retailer or your local record store . March, Pt. 1: Centro-matic - Fort Recovery Centro-matic - "Calling Thermatico": mp3 [...]
