Have you ever hit up a Ceremony show and just been scared out of your wits? The California punk band has a tendency to make their audiences go crazy and, if not prepared, you could get caught up in a whirlwind of some serious moshing. Luckily, the Rock it Out! Blog is here to help. Today's episode features an interview with Ceremony guitarists Anthony Anzaldo and Andy Nelson. During their chat, Sami asked them if they could offer up some tips on how to have a successful mosh pit, what were some of the more insane [...]

★★★★☆ A crash course in ambient electronica - notwithstanding that the crashes are floats down to earth, a 28-minute running time - -means Albert Swarm, a.k.a. the Finn Pietu Arvola, is promising harmony in a hurry. Starting with a strong dose of smelling salts with "Something Glows," "A Dream That Glistened" sets the itinerary adrift, posing one of those logistical problems of being glossy chillout, and where the widescreen nature within means it should probably be turned up louder than is conventional. Worry always seems to be part of Swarm’s make-up though – never [...]

Since their inception in 1999, Bloc Party have meticulously crafted a unique blend of raw yet totally dance-able, effect-heavy post-punk that draws influence from Britain's vast catalog of alt rock bands ranging from the depressed angst of Joy Division to the dance rock stylings of Depeche Mode. Now a solidified outfit of seasoned professionals, the foursome has one of the broadest reaches of any live act, easily entertaining the masses of electronic events like HARD or instigating mosh pits with the energy of a hardcore punk band. With Ceremony serving as concert opener, Kele Okereke kept his edge [...]

In addition to those sweet as you like on-stage photos of Cancer Bats' Main Stage triumph we showed you last weekend , our man Gobinder Jhitta took a shedload of photos at this year's Leeds Festival. We basically gave him free rein to go shoot whatever and whoever he wanted, and he didn't let us down - pretty much every band we ranted and/or raved about in our post-Reading & Leeds Festival podcast is featured in his gallery, which you can check out after the jump. by teepoo Victoria BC's Wand recent released Mt. St. Helens , 9 tracks of synthgasm. On top of those synths, lie some catchy vocals and funky beats. Though the tracks are on the long side, there is plenty going on to keep you entertained throughout. Here is the first track (at 13 minutes) called Ceremony . You can check out the rest on Bandcamp . Photos by Mark Pantoja There are a lot of reasons why I love Fucked Up , but their lead singer Pink Eyes (real name: Damian Abraham) has to be the chief one. I hate to reduce a band this good to just one element like that, but the dude once tweeted "Black Keys = Nickelback for hipsters." That, and the first time I saw Fucked Up play was at an outside show at SXSW—when it was actually pretty cold down in Austin—but Abraham stripped to his undies anyway, climbed [...]

Starting tomorrow, Thursday, September 6, through Saturday, September 8, KEXP will be broadcasting live from Doug Fir Lounge in Portland during MusicfestNW . It'll be our 6th consecutive year and the lineup just keeps getting better and better. All performances are free and open to the public, but space is limited and first come, first served. [...]
For Albert Swarm 's latest project he brings on director Arttu Nieminen to help match some visuals to his latest single, "Things Fold Into Themselves". The track is soothing yet chaotic, perfect for the bending effects that were employed in this film. The stuttering camera work works magnificently as well, playing in perfectly to the philosophical theme this instrumental lends itself to. This song landed on Albert Swarm's debut Wake LP, which is out now via Ceremony Recordings .
The dark Finland/Brooklyn musician Albert Swarm’s dazzling new Arttu Nieminen-directed video for "Things Fold Into Themselves" features some wild special effects applied to a rippling lake and its visitors. While Swarm's instrumental track was presumably ... read more
Ever since I was old enough to complain, my dad took great pleasure in the act of dragging my always-resistant ass to music festivals. A summer full of glorious music for him meant a summer full of unstifled groans from me. His taste in music back then - folk, folk, and nothing but folk - meant we hit folk festivals exclusively, and he wasn't shy about tackling the big, multi-day camp-out fests that separate the men from the meek. I have fond, fuzzy memories of trying to enjoy the Philadelphia Folk Festival and basically roasting alive under an angry sun [...]

[Photos and capsule reviews of selected sets from the Spring Street Stage at Sunday's FYF Fest:] The Faint, Twin Shadow, HEALTH, Paul Banks, Lightning Bolt, Cursive, Ceremony, Joyce Manor, PAPA, Lovely Bad Things [...]
With FYF going on down in LA this weekend, we're getting a decent spillover of excellent shows up here in the Bay Area. Though not quite at Fauxchella levels, it's nice to have a Faux Your Festival going on right now. And since your regular host for this column, Dakin Hardwick, will be enjoying himself at [...]
Here's a sprawling new track from Wand , an experimental pop project of one Grande Prairie, Alberta-based Derek Janzen. Coming in at well over 13 minutes, "Ceremony" leads off the recently-released Mt. St. Helens LP that quietly slipped out last week via the group's Bandcamp and comes accented by some pretty dizzying saxophone work. On September 25th, Rhode Island noise-rock duo Lightning Bolt will release a rarities collection entitled Oblivion Hunter via Load Records. The seven-track effort collects "lost" cuts recorded in 2008 and will be available digitally and on 123 vinyl. The five-minute opener "King Candy" is pure, overwhelming dissonance, manically combining heavy drums, distorted vocals, and heaps of fuzz that detonate with the power of a noise-rock A-bomb. In support of the effort, the band will be on the road throughout the fall, starting tonight [...]
The always-eclectic Øya collected dozens of big name international acts and local bands to Oslo's Medieval Park and neighboring clubs over four days last week. Among them: Björk, A$AP Rocky, the Stone Roses, Chromatics, Baroness, Bon Iver, Odd Future, Florence + The Machine, and Frank Ocean, who ended his set after four songs due to vocal problems then cancelled his remaining European tour dates. Clint Heyer was on hand to photograph the festival; check out his pics in the gallery above.
Yeah, it's a rare original content post. We stayed away for a while, and will probably return to hibernation immediately, sort of like that international sporting event. But while we're awake, here are a couple of records we liked this year. Japandroids - Celebration Rock . Post-Nothing was a solid introduction for this band but they really caught our attention with the infectious Art Czars 73. A collection of other singles tided us over, but didn't come close to heralding this record. If you listen to this band's [...]

Well, looks like waking up at 4am everyday this past week to watch the Olympics have caught me off guard and I completely forgot to make a post this morning (first one I missed in forever!) To make up for this morning's miss, here's a video of Ceremony covering "Kiss Off" by Violent Femmes, part of A.V. Undercover 2012 .
The A.V. Club’s “Undercover” series produces too many great gems to keep track of. We’ve shared recent highlights like Grouplove’s bloody Andrew W.K. and Deer Tick’s rowdy Harvey Danger, but the series may be too much of a good thing and it’s hard to keep up. If you’ve fallen behind on these too, we’ve rounded up some of the recent highlights that we never got around to posting. A robed 24-person Neil Young, a mariachi Decemberists, and a pink-mohawked Violent Femmes await… The Hood Internet – Back On The Chain Gang (The Pretenders cover) The Polyphonic Spree – Heart of [...]
