Exercises is one of the most stunningly beautiful records to be released this year. It's sprawling and subdued. It also comes dangerously close to being a masterpiece. CFCF's Exercises begins with a quiet, almost somber, piano that slowly becomes more and more enticing. A bed of synthesizers soon accompanies it and manages to make it even more irresistible. Instrumental piano-based music hasn't been this convincingly gorgeous since Eluvium's masterpiece, An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death. What's gorgeous about YT, is that he can capture paint drying and it would still be as artistic as (fill in the blank) performing. Not enough people use the EP format effectively. A lot of bands just take it as a song dump, putting on random tunes from their catalogue that just don’t fit anywhere else, or using it as a mere teaser for a full album. The excellent Exercises EP by Montreal producer Mike Silver, better known as CFCF, is due at the end of June, and "Exercise #5 (September)" from it has been captured on camera by the Yours Truly team. This cover from David Sylvian's excellent Secrets of the Beehive album has been reimagined as a simple ballad, stripping away the subtle synth-pop textures of the recorded version.
