Andrew Bird recently scored the forthcoming independent film Norman . Bird will release the soundtrack to the movie on October 11 via Mom + Pop records. The soundtrack features Bird 's score, along with music from Wolf Parade , the Blow , Richard Swift , and Chad VanGaalen . You can check out some of the film's score on Normans official website, Normanthemovie.com . Norman is set to open in AMC Theaters on October [...]

There's something about a song with whistling that never fails to captivate. From "(Sitting At The) Dock of the Bay" to "Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard" to basically any song by Andrew Bird (the indisputable whistle king), it always adds a little something that makes the track burrow deep inside your brain. One recent example is Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks", which turned a catchy melody and even catchier whistle into a massive crossover hit (it even inspired a cover version by Weezer ). This is nothing new of course, if you look at [...]

The tunes are coming thick and fast again at the moment and keeping up is proving almost impossible. Here are a few of the tracks from the web and our inbox that have caught our ears over the past few days. First up Okkervil River who are riding high on the critical acclaim for the release of their latest full-length album I Am Very Far . Just this month the band released a new 7-inch for Your Past Life As A Blast . You can listen and download the lead single below. [...]

Yoo hoo internets, I'm ba-aack! With a friend visiting, and in no mood to waste his holiday watching me fanny about on the computer, I ended up taking an unplanned day off yesterday. We even did one of those tourist things which it is so easy to ignore when you actually live in a city: we climbed Arthur's Seat . And it was bloody amazing! So what, after a weekend of endurance drinking, does this week hold in store? Well, the general idea was 'as much sleep as I can manage', but it looks like this might [...]

Sacred Bones' sons Gary War are slated to join Chad VanGaalen when he goes West for his upcoming tour, beginning at the top of October. VanGaalen and War will unite in experimentalsim starting in Portland and finishing in Washington. Possessing two drastically different sounds may become a productive twist of events; VanGaleen's videos are just weird enough for the electroprog of Gary War and perhaps foreshadows a future collaboration. Check out the video for "Molten Light" off...
Returning to Diaper Island after months of absence is a welcome vacation. Chad VanGaalen belongs in my personal continuum of loved artists; every season, without question, at least one of his (now) four finely-crafted albums will revolve back into the foreground. Although this latest release serves as a well-honed singular statement, there's nary a wrong turn to be found on VanGaalen's previous full-length efforts: the lo-fi apiary on Infiniheart effectively domesticates his vast array of sound collages and clairvoyant folk, analog synapses blast electronic bursts between transmitting lofty ballads of Laputa-like cloud-cities and sinking ships on [...]

The multi-talented musician will soon hit the road Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.
This month's favorite downloads skew toward songwriters, as opposed to electronica or ambient (though there's still a little of that too). As usual, this mix is best experienced in the order given. Starting this month I'm also going to begin sharing these mixes via Spotify (if they carry the songs), so follow me over there if you're on the site—my username is scottpgwp. Credit where it's due: three of these tracks come courtesy of Rawkblog—Lia Ices and Chad VanGaalen come from the same mix that yielded the Little Scream track I mentioned yesterday [...]

Austin Nelson So y'all know Wilco , right? Chicago-based outfit that rose from the ashes of Uncle Tupelo and survived numerous lineup changes and label drama to release some of the best pop/rock/roots records of the past almost two decades and establish themselves as one of America's best bands. Yeah, that Wilco. They're following up 20092s Wilco (The Album) with their eight studio album The Whole Love on September 27 - the first to be released on their own label [...]

On previous affairs, Matthew Swann, a.k.a. Extra Happy Ghost!!! , cobbled together songs that offered surprising depth and melody, considering the tools with which he had to work. Decorated with a defiant, minimalist touch, How The Beach Boys Sound To Those With No Feelings and the fantastical split 73 with Lab Coast documented Swann's obsession with hiding melody behind tape hiss, fuzz, and psychedelics. Oh, and a singular mission to challenging the limitations of shitty gear. All things considered, a partnership with Calgary's eccentric, vintage sound man Chad Van Gaalen [...]

Diaper Island is Chad VanGaalen's best release so far, as well as his most accessible, owing largely to its overall feeling of completeness
20 2011 jams, in no particular order. (Just kidding. Of course they're in order. Not included: Destroyer and Radiohead, because I couldn't decide.) Best of 2011: Songs of the Half-Year: ZIP 1. Filed under: News , Exclusive Jeff Thorburn Chad VanGaalen is the first to tell you that being both a musician and family man is a pretty tough act to balance. "I have smaller windows of time to work on stuff," the Calgary, AB, singer-songwriter tells Spinner. "Before, I could've gone into the studio for 20 hours at a time but now it's different." Touring doesn't work out so well either [...]

Since I didn't get to see Chad VanGaalen play the main stage on Canada Day at Jacques-Cartier Park at around 6pm. Found out that he was going to do a short acoustic session in a Yurt around 4:45pm. It was a great short amazing set called "The Art of Chad VanGaalen". At least it wasn't as packed and crazy when I saw him at NXNE. It was more of a great intimate set. Chad wore a Garfield t-shirt that had Canada on it [...]
![Albums of 2011: Second quarter [Top 25]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3559171_lg.jpg)
It's July 1st and we are already half-way through 2011. Besides being Canada Day, it's already the start of the summer and end of spring. Now I will do my Top 25 albums that came out in the second quarter. Since I made a mistake in the first quarter making it four months. Albums that came out on April to June. There will be some albums from the first quarter that will be in this list. Here is the Second Quarter Top 25. [...]
A video from Chad VanGaalen's latest album, Diaper Island . Though it doesn't sound like a very nice place, this album is definitely worth a visit if you're into the eerie and cavernous sounds of bands like Women and even Timber Timbre. Look for this LP now on Sub Pop .
Chad VanGaalen recently did a session with Southern Souls , check out 'Cut My Hair' and 'Shave My Pussy' off his new record Diaper Island. CHAD VANGAALEN - Cut My Hair / Shave My Pussy from Mitch Fillion (southernsouls.ca) on Vimeo .
