This week starts off with nothing to do on Monday! I have no suggestions for Monday so just go to some barbeque and hang out. As for the rest of the week it picks up pretty quickly with lots of good shows all week long and into the weekend. Should be an interesting week of live music viewing here in New York. Tuesday: While many people will be at the sold out Ratatat show I will not be, so instead of recommending that you and I go to a sold out show I'll suggest [...]

"you got stuck in traffic with your car..//you dream about the future about that mother fucking life" Chad VanGaalen , ladies and gents, is saying it with Canadian plain directness. Start singing in 1998 and releasing his first album in 2004, Alberta's VanGaalen sounds like Neil Young having a brawl with Conor Oberst on slower album, and Wolf Parade swallowing Nintendo on his recent album. This is the sound of 'do it yourself' north country combined with too many snow days. It's spring time head bopper. Chad VanGaalen : [...]

Chad VanGaalen's Skelliconnection has been covered at length in the blogosphere I guess, but I only started listening to it about a week ago. It actually was only released this past Tuesday, so maybe many of you have only been listening to it for a week as well. He's on Sub Pop , so everyone usually loves to jump on anything they put out. Both reviewing and purchasing...rightfully so though, as this album is amazing to say the least. I've been [...]

Chad VanGaalen - Skelliconnection Singer-songwriter Chad VanGaalen's sophomore album was released this week on Sub Pop and this 15 track collection is all over the map stylistically. I caught the tailend of Chad's live set nearly a year ago at the Southgate House in Newport, KY when he was opening to Fruit Bats and Rogue Wave. Though I enjoyed his performance and really dig "Clinically Dead" and "Kill Me in My Sleep", I have not absorbed his debut Infiniheart in any [...]

Dropping the ball. Getting back in the swing of things: We'll finish the '60s traxxx tonight, cover sweltering summer jamz (VanGaalen and Lambchop - straight ballin') tomorrow, and take an in-depth look at the golden age of Belle & Sebastian singles later this week. August is the hottest month: Chad VanGaalen - "Flower Gardens": mp3 (right-click, save-as) Lambchop - "Paperback Bible": stream In the meantime, there's plenty of great reading to be had in the final posts of MP3 blog retiree, Vain, [...]
Chad VanGaalen isn’t supposed to be a solo artist. He was in a 2 man band called Broken Ankles with his friend Eric Hamelin. But then Eric moved away. So Chad kicked it in his basement, played the guitar and created some art. (He animated his own video for the song Clinically Dead.) The result was his first commercially available album Infiniheart. His next album “Skelliconnection†will be released on the 22 of August but until then listen to these songs from Infiniheart... or else! Check out his site! Chad VanGaalen [...]

Chad VanGaalen - Flower Gardens Chad VanGaalen’s new album, Skelliconnection , is being released on Tuesday. I remember his debut album, Infiniheart, received quite a bit of praise on the blog circuit about a year ago, but it's funny that I never realized he was from Alberta until just recently. His label, Flemish Eye, is based out of Calgary. It's weird, because it's something I definitely would have remembered upon reading. I have been told a few times before that I'm not very perceptive. [...]
MY FIRST EXPOSURE TO CHAD VANGAALEN was his set in support of Rogue Wave and Fruit Bats in Newport, KY last September-a night that saw nearly as many people on stage in total as there were in the audience (a turnout made all the more depressing by the fact that VanGaalen performs by himself). [...]
“I broke that out of my canister of quips and snaps.†-- Philly Boy Roy, finally revealing the source of his neverending supply of comebacks “I admire any kind of person that can make a livin’ sitting down.†-- Philly Boy Roy on his respect for sedentary professionals “They’re not at all cosmopolitan like we’s is." -- Philly Boy Roy on the unsophisticated Ames, Iowa-based Zieglers “They made a bad record, you don't need to play it!†-- Fred, not a fan of Led Zeppelin's "Hot Dog" “Knock [...]

Chad Vangaalen 's Infiniheart was one of my favorite records of 2004 , and again of 2005 , and I'm slowly but surely falling in love with his newest LP, Skelliconnection . According to Sub Pop , the album "was culled from hundreds of songs Chad has recorded over the last year or so, while holed up in his bare bones basement home studio. Using handmade instruments alongside those available to mere mortals, he's created an even more diverse assemblage of music than for his last [...]
Another two records I've been spinning next to non-stop -- and have recently posted to Stereogum -- are VanGaalen's Skelliconnection and The Roots crew's return to form on Game Theory . I loved Infiniheart. I know Chad can be a tad dull on stage, but that shouldn't take from the effectiveness of his genre-jumping stylings. The guy has been pulled reluctantly into the spotlight by those silly Sub Poppers; he was happy to be a bedroom genius, recording hundreds of songs released surreptitiously on tiny Flemish Eye Records. But no, they [...]

Hi there...you might remember me...the guy who brought you Musical joy,...The man that filled your heads with great tales, and the person who will continue to entertain in the future...Its been awhile since the last post (almost a month ago) so first I would like to say SORRY ...the account was closed due to some copyright/e-mail issues...but its all straightened out now and I`m ready to roll with more Neileslife action....Lots happened over the break, I found tons of new music, saw some more movies and got lots of stories to catch up on...but I don`t have [...]
Calgarian, Chad VanGaalen, has been critically lauded for his solo debut, Infiniheart (2004), and will be saddled with the same complications when his upcoming record, Skelliconnection, is released August 22nd. VanGaalen's Canadian label, Flemish Eye, started the ball rolling by offering the information that VanGaalen had been recording for the past ten years, in his bedroom, and had amassed 100's
Chad left us hanging a bit too long after his great debut Infiniheart. A year or two may not be long for some, but when you've already written hundreds of tunes over years in your cold Canadian bedroom -- and...

Phoenix We all know that Nelly's "Hot in Herrre" was the summer jam a few years back, and this year Nelly Furtado is making a play for jam of the season with "Promiscuous." But what about all those other tunes for sipping mint juleps on the sun porch or just descending into a state of pure beach bliss under the influence of your headphones? While Refinery29 loves its [...]

Owl Song [...]
Chad vanGaalen - "Wing Finger" I picture this performed to an egg, a necessary serenade for every egg to hatch. Chad vanGaalen, his voice worn out from the bird warbling for 10 hours a day, bringing as many little hatchlings to life as one banjo and two muted trumpets and some simple organ can do. It's the chick that brings the bass drum, the xylophone, joins in, plays along, whistles, and all those other fitting, tired, lively things. [Buy Infiniheart] Matthew Friedberger - "Ruth Versus Richard" The looseleaf is a landscape. Blue lines on white, are either roads or the [...]
